The American Reception Of Gabriel Fauré: From Francophile Boston, 1892‒1945, To The Broader Postwar Mainstream, Heather De Savage
The American Reception Of Gabriel Fauré: From Francophile Boston, 1892‒1945, To The Broader Postwar Mainstream, Heather De Savage
Doctoral Dissertations
The importance of French influences in American musical life from the 1920s onward, particularly as personified in the teaching of Nadia Boulanger, has long been central to narratives of American music; the much earlier impact of Gabriel Fauré, however, has been largely ignored. This dissertation examines Fauré’s reception in the U.S., through a detailed consideration of performance and criticism in Boston between 1892 and 1945, and a more selective examination of aspects of the composer's broader reception both during and after this time.
Boston’s increasingly Francophile orientation around 1900 encouraged the presence of French music on concert programs, and distinguished …

2015-2016 Art Between Real and Imagined
Horizon is a new work for seven dancers centered around the idea of density. In this piece I endeavored to add as much as possible to the space in terms of dancers and movement. With multiple phrases occurring simultaneously, the dance takes the form of a constantly shifting universe full of activity. glacier, my preceding work was an exercise of stripping away in an effort to reduce movement to its least possible form. Working again with collaborators Michael Schumacher and set and lighting designer Robert Wierzel, we’ve done something different. Michael’s multiple rhythms and use of a live percussionist propel …

Disney’S Female Gender Roles: The Change Of Modern Culture, Mckenzie Barber
Disney’S Female Gender Roles: The Change Of Modern Culture, Mckenzie Barber
University Honors Program
Disney Animation and their films are a huge part of the entertainment industry in America. They influence and reach children through many avenues, not just with movies, but through clothing, games, and toys. Disney has been around for over 80 years, and during that time, they have played a role in how society displays gender roles. As modern culture goes through changes, Disney can also be seen making changes in the way they represent their characters, especially females. While looking specifically at Disney princesses, the depiction of females and their gender roles can be described in at least one of …

Expressionist Art And Drama Before, During, And After The Weimar Republic, Shane Michael Kennedy
Expressionist Art And Drama Before, During, And After The Weimar Republic, Shane Michael Kennedy
Dissertations and Theses
Expressionism was the major literary and art form in Germany beginning in the early 20th century. It flourished before and during World War I and continued to be the dominant art for of the Early Weimar Republic. By 1924, Neue Sachlichkeit replaced Expressionism as the dominant art form in Germany. Many Expressionists claimed they were never truly apart of Expressionism. However, in the periodization and canonization many of these young artists are labeled as Expressionist.
This thesis examines the periodization and canonization of Expression in art, drama, and film and proves that Expressionism began much earlier than scholars believe and …

Virtue, Oppression, And Resistance Struggles, Trevor William Smith
Virtue, Oppression, And Resistance Struggles, Trevor William Smith
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation explores and develops an account of the moral obligation to engage in resistance struggles against oppression and it does so by situating oppression squarely within the framework of neo-Aristotelian virtue ethics. It is argued that when oppression is investigated through the lens of virtue ethics the harmful and damning nature of oppression must be understood as a substantial moral, not merely political, problem. In short, it is shown that oppression acts in a variety of ways as a barrier for the achievement of flourishing for the oppressed. Turning from, and building on, this investigative and largely descriptive analysis …

Eating Spain: National Cuisine Since 1900, Matthew J. Wild
Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies
Analyzing cookbooks, gastronomic guides, literature and film, this dissertationoutlines the creation of a Spanish national cuisine. Studying the works of Carmen de Burgos, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Dionisio Pérez, Ana María Herrera, Juan Mari Arzak and Ferrán Adrià among others, the project examines the evolution of this nationalist discourse by identifying common and recurring themes in an effort to extrapolate and describe the historical and cultural evolution of food from 1900 to the present day.
Within the framework of Food and Cultural Studies, this project treats cookbooks, culinary manifestos and guidebooks as texts. Influenced by a variety of culinary and gastronomic …

Off The Hip: A Thermodynamics Of The Cool, Rebecca Kanost
Off The Hip: A Thermodynamics Of The Cool, Rebecca Kanost

This dissertation asserts that the cool’s significance in 20th-century American culture exceeds that assigned to it by current critiques. It assays a rhetorical model which describes coolness as stillness in behavior that surprises witnesses, given the assumptions they make about the still person and context for his or her behavior. Such stillness agitates witnesses’ normative assumptions about all those in the rhetorical situation, including assumptions about affect, gender, race, class and sexuality. Agitation may also lead to conjecture about what mindset could produce cool behavior. To test this model I investigate representations of coolness in James Baldwin’s short story, “Going …
