The Prophetic Hope Of Emerging Adulthood: Emerging Together Toward An Abundant Life, Adam David Pallay
The Prophetic Hope Of Emerging Adulthood: Emerging Together Toward An Abundant Life, Adam David Pallay
Doctor of Ministry
I am studying hope within Emerging Adulthood in order to bring clarity to the cultural conversations surrounding Millennials and faith so that emerging adults can have the tools to move toward and experience an abundant life. The conversation around Emerging Adulthood is often limited to the Millennial generation. This is problematic because it paints Emerging Adulthood as a rebellious generation rather than a natural stage of human development. Within this generation framework, emerging adults are viewed as needing to be fixed and/or assimilated; therefore, their voices and contributions get minimized until they decide to fall in line with the status …
The Effects Of Mindfulness Meditation And Mind-Wandering On Coping-Related Hopefulness In Undergraduate College Students, Shelby N. Green
The Effects Of Mindfulness Meditation And Mind-Wandering On Coping-Related Hopefulness In Undergraduate College Students, Shelby N. Green
Honors Theses
High levels of stress in college students are extremely prevalent. This is evident in time-consuming academic responsibilities overlapping with family life, work duties, and personal life. Stress can have negative impacts on academic performance and physical health in college students , and it has been correlated with various negative outcomes including anxiety and depression (Segrin,1999), increases in headaches (Labbe, Murphy & O’Brien, 1997), increased rates of athletic injury (Brewer & Petrie, 1996), suicidal ideation and hopelessness (Dixon, Rumford, Heppner, & Lipps, 1992), sleep disturbances (Verlander, Benedict, & Hanson, 1999), poor health behaviors (Sadava & Pak, 1993; Naquin & Gilbert, 1996), …
Building A Culture Of Hope For Youth At Risk: Supporting Learners With Optimism, Place, Pride, And Purpose, Emily L. Gibson, Robert D. Barr
Building A Culture Of Hope For Youth At Risk: Supporting Learners With Optimism, Place, Pride, And Purpose, Emily L. Gibson, Robert D. Barr
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Journal
A Culture of Hope provides a blueprint for schools wanting to meet the social/emotional needs of youth placed at risk. While the importance of meeting students’ social/emotional needs is clearly supported in the literature and in the media, teachers and administrators may need help in determining where and how to start. This essay introduces the Culture of Hope, provides an overview of the four Seeds of Hope, and shares links to student and staff surveys as well as methods for analyzing surveys to reveal student and staff needs.
The Warrior Journey: A Hope Enhancement Intervention For Veterans With Combat-Related Ptsd, Wesley H. Fleming
The Warrior Journey: A Hope Enhancement Intervention For Veterans With Combat-Related Ptsd, Wesley H. Fleming
Doctor of Ministry
Veterans with combat-related PTSD often report a loss of hope due to their traumatic experiences. Chaplains and mental health practitioners seek to improve functioning among veterans suffering from mental health disorders, but need common language and methods to work together toward clinically meaningful gains. Among all the theories of hope reviewed, Hope Theory most closely supports criteria established to provide a framework from which interventions can be developed to increase hope among veterans with combat-related PTSD. Further, Hope Theory principles align with biblical theology, providing opportunity for collaborative efforts between Christian chaplains and clinicians to develop and use interventions based …
Sentencing And The Salience Of Pain And Hope, Benjamin Berger
Sentencing And The Salience Of Pain And Hope, Benjamin Berger
Benjamin L. Berger
What would a jurisprudence of sentencing that was induced from the experience of punishment, rather than deduced from the technocracy of criminal justice, look like? Rather than focusing narrowly on the question of quantum, such a jurisprudence would be concerned with the character and quality of punishment. A fit sentence would account for pain, loss, estrangement, alienation, and other features of the offender’s aggregate experience of suffering at the hands of the state in response to his or her wrongdoing. This would be a broader, more resolutely political conception of criminal punishment. This article shows that the jurisprudence of the …

The present impartial judgment of God should drive us to fear God during our sojourn to heaven because our conduct and being is sinful, but we are awed because God is the Father who gives us our only hope of salvation, Jesus.

"Then You Fall Off": Youth Experiences And Responses To Transitioning To Homelessness, Diane M. Santa Maria, Sarah C. Narendorf, Noel Bezette-Flores, Yoonsook Ha
Journal of Family Strengths
Introduction: This study aims to broaden our understanding of the experience of homelessness and unstable housing in youth. While quantitative research highlights risk factors associated with experiencing homelessness as a youth, little qualitative research has been conducted to explore the lived experience of this transition to homelessness or unstable housing and how youth respond to becoming homeless. This study utilizes data from youth descriptions of their experiences to understand the context of the transition to homelessness and how youth manage this transition.
Methods: A qualitative study with a quantitative component was conducted with a nonprobability sample of homeless youth aged …
The Journey Of Hope On The Road To Resilience: Former Residents' Experiences In Child Care Facilities, Giavana F H Jones
The Journey Of Hope On The Road To Resilience: Former Residents' Experiences In Child Care Facilities, Giavana F H Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When children are placed in out-of-home care, they are spared from further dangers associated with their home life. However, due to a number of other risk factors, children placed in out-of-home care, as a group, have typically had less positive outcomes than their counterparts. Nevertheless, even in the presence of various challenges, there are individuals who are raised in out-of-home care who do excel and overcome their challenges. In this study, ten young adults, between the ages of 18-31, were engaged in interviews where they shared the good and bad experiences of living in child care facilities in The Bahamas …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between hope and career development in students with emotional disturbances or behavior disorders who were attending an alternative middle and high school. Additionally, this researcher wanted to see if students’ participation in career counseling had an interactive effect. A total of 65 male and female middle and high school students were recruited to complete the Hope Scale, Children’s Hope Scale, My Vocational Situation, and a demographic information sheet. The data analysis included calculations with Pearson’s Correlational Coefficient, regression, and t-tests. Significant relationship was found between hope and career development. Statistical …

Hope And Strengths Within Adaptive Sailing: Narratives From The Queen's Quay Disabled Sailing Program, James Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I explored how participants were transformed through their interactions with each other and within an adaptive sailing program using a Hope and Strengths Perspective underpinned by the Duality of Structure. Through 12 semi-structured interviews with six sailors, four volunteers and two staff members in the Queen’s Quay Disabled Sailing Program (QQDSP), I examined participants’ experiences and how the QQDSP’s structures facilitated those experiences. Participants described their overall experiences in terms of independence and a sense of community. They developed new strengths and enhanced existing strengths by overcoming challenges and through access to resources and community support. Subsequently, participants used their …

Got Hope? Measuring The Construct Of Relationship Hope With A Nationally Representative Sample Of Married Individuals, Sage Elizabeth Erickson
Got Hope? Measuring The Construct Of Relationship Hope With A Nationally Representative Sample Of Married Individuals, Sage Elizabeth Erickson
Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores an emerging construct: relationship hope. I define relationship hope as when individuals feel that regardless of the current quality of the relationship, there is significant hope for the relationship in the future if they keep working on it. The Relationship Hope Scale (RHS) is a new five-item scale that measures this construct. I evaluated the psychometric properties of RHS with Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theory (IRT). I used a nationally representative sample of married individuals, ages 25-50 years old, in the United States. I found that RHS performs well in both CTT and IRT …
Reducing Stress And Increasing Hope Among Typhoon Yolanda Survivors, Maria Victoria Del Fierro, Mary Elizabeth Huxster
Reducing Stress And Increasing Hope Among Typhoon Yolanda Survivors, Maria Victoria Del Fierro, Mary Elizabeth Huxster
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Hundreds of thousands of people are affected by natural disasters every year. Many of these people face mental and emotional consequences from the traumatic experience. Research indicates that the aftereffects of such experiences can result in social, familial, and educational impairments in children. The current study tested the efficacy of a brief cognitive behavioral intervention on elementary school aged children intended to alleviate the mental and emotional consequences following a natural disaster. The study applied quantitative methods through pre and post intervention assessments measuring stress and hope. The participants assessed included 18 Filipino children between the ages of 10-12 years, …

The Effects Of Injury And Displacement On Typhoon Yolanda Survivors, Crystel N. Chaparro, Alexis L. Mitchell
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study was conducted with a group Filipino survivors of Typhoon Yolanda. It examines the effects of being injured or displaced as a result of the natural disaster on the effectiveness of a pilot project addressing depression, anxiety and hope. Eight adults (N = 8) completed a series of five workshops along with a pre and post questionnaire. Those that were displaced, exhibited a reduction in depression (24%), a reduction in anxiety (12.8%), and an increase in hope (14.78%) after completing the workshops. Furthermore, the individuals that were injured experienced a reduction in anxiety (22.7%), an increase in depression (28.48%), …
"Everything Remains Uncertain": Theorizing Parents' Communication About Uncertainty, Hope, And Hopelessness While Managing Complex Pediatric Chronic Conditions, Katherine Ann Rafferty
"Everything Remains Uncertain": Theorizing Parents' Communication About Uncertainty, Hope, And Hopelessness While Managing Complex Pediatric Chronic Conditions, Katherine Ann Rafferty
Theses and Dissertations
Navigating a child’s chronic illness and treatment is particularly challenging for parents and parental surrogates. These experiences may add to parents’ feelings of uncertainty. During this time, many parents report the need to be the “bearer of hope” for their child, regardless of the challenges that may prevent this from being possible. Researchers studying hope and uncertainty have acknowledged that these two concepts co-exist during the parental caregiver experience and effected by external factors (e.g., medical information or conversations with other people); however, a dearth of research remains about parents’ meanings and interactions that influence their social constructions of uncertainty, …
Death Of A Journalist, Ryan Mark Hubble
Death Of A Journalist, Ryan Mark Hubble
MSU Graduate Theses
This thesis is an attempt to capture through a novel the contradictory feelings of loss and hope the Millienial generation is experiencing as once-great institutions in the U.S., such as print journalism, are overcome by the rapid expansion of an increasingly connected, digital society. My thesis is the first six chapters of my novel, Death of a Journalist, and lays the foundation for the conflict between the past and the present the protagonist endures throughout the rest of the work. By focusing on the protagonist's inability to leave his own past and the dying newspaper at which he works, I …
Effects Of An Electronically Guided Prayer Intervention, Brian Lee Goetsch
Effects Of An Electronically Guided Prayer Intervention, Brian Lee Goetsch
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Abstract Hope has been identified as an important factor in a variety of positive outcomes in psychotherapy, medicine, academic success, and for general levels of functioning. However, until now most studies on hope have been correlational in nature, and researchers have rarely sought to understand how hope can be facilitated. The present study considered the effect of prayer on experiences of hope in a national sample of Christian college students. An intervention group completed a guided prayer exercise once a day for 2 weeks. Pre and post-test levels of hope were assessed and compared to a control group, and a …
Choices Related To Maximizing Quality Of Life At End Of Life, Theresa Lynn
Choices Related To Maximizing Quality Of Life At End Of Life, Theresa Lynn
Dissertations
Humans, including those residing in the United States, can live in denial of their own mortality. Because of this, futile care is sometimes provided, often at great monetary expense and for little or no return in terms of quality or length of life. At least two opportunities exist for making choices regarding care at the end of life in the U.S.: completing advance directives and choosing hospice care. This dissertation consists of three studies related to this topic. The first is a quantitative study about advance directives and attitude toward death. The advance directive completion rate among adults in the …
Attachment & Hope Of Institutionalized And Reunified Children In Ghana, Bryan A. Teuscher, Jini Roby
Attachment & Hope Of Institutionalized And Reunified Children In Ghana, Bryan A. Teuscher, Jini Roby
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
Purpose: There are over two million children living in institutional care worldwide. Research consistently shows that living in institutions negatively affects children’s social attachments. The impact of orphanage care on perceived hope has received little attention. Increased hope is related to decreased feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness and increased academic achievement, adaptive coping styles, and even improved athletic performance. This study examined how hope for the future may be impacted by perceived social attachments.
Methods: The sample consisted of 148 children aged 8-18 living in 13 orphanages in Ghana. The independent variable of attachment was made up of fourteen …

The Power Of Spirituals, Eileen Guenther
The Power Of Spirituals, Eileen Guenther
Symposium on Worship Archive
Spirituals come out of a particular time and place, a truly painful part of history. Yet that context of pain and suffering gave us "sorrow songs," and also gave us songs of hope and liberation. The music comes directly out of the slaves’ experiences and enabled them to "sing what they could not say." This is music that speaks to and for us today, music of tremendous emotional power, that connects us with the strength of the human spirit and the power of faith of those enslaved, just as it connects us with each other in our common humanity and …
