Visualization On The Big Screen: Hands-On Immersive Environments Designed For Student And Faculty Collaboration, Bryan Sinclair, Jill Sexton, Joseph Hurley

Large-scale panoramic displays designed for collaboration can change users’ perspective and reframe and amplify digital content in a shared pixel space. Many universities have implemented large-scale displays, but they are often in areas that restrict access to the equipment and require staff mediation for use. Additionally, dedicated staff may be required to program content for the walls, limiting the variety of content displayed. This presentation covers efforts at the libraries at Georgia State University and the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill to implement immersive display technologies that allow unmediated patron access and reduce the amount of staff …

Digital Scholarship And Interactivity: A Study Of Commenting Features In Networked Books, Jenna Sheffield

Digital scholarly publishing is moving toward the use of commenting features, which allow readers to contribute to the knowledge production of the publication and establish a community of readers within a digital text. In this article, I use theories of interactivity in order to articulate some of the potentials as well as challenges that are inherent in using commenting features within digital scholarship. In using interactivity as the main theory through which scholars understand their decisions about commenting functions, this article argues, digital scholars will better be able to frame the interactions that can occur among readers and the author …

This paper will provide an overview of current topics in Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communications DS/SC and draw connections between these new areas and the traditional skill set of electronic resources librarians (ERLs). Commonalities between the skills outlined in the Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians (CCERL) and those needed for success in DS/SC will form the basis of the author's recommendations for involvement in these new areas.
