Exploring The Relationship Between Cultural Intelligence And Teacher Burnout In The Mississippi Delta, Lakeysha Hallmon
Exploring The Relationship Between Cultural Intelligence And Teacher Burnout In The Mississippi Delta, Lakeysha Hallmon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
School districts in the Mississippi Delta are located within one of the poorest regions in the United States (United States Census Bureau, 2012). These school districts face challenges such as low reading and math scores, high concentrations of students living in poverty, and a critical shortage of teachers. Researchers link the critical shortage to high turnover rates and the associated teacher burnout (Darling-Hammond, 2010). The problem of teacher burnout and the consequential attrition that persists in the Mississippi Delta may be ascribed to a cultural disconnect between teachers and students (Brown-Jeffy & Cooper, 2011). Thus, in this exploratory, correlational study, …

Wellness As A Mitigating Factor Against Burnout For Public School Teachers, Michelle Welch Brasfield
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The incidence of teacher stress and burnout has been researched for many years in various geographic areas and populations. In more recent years, wellness has been proposed as a mitigating factor in reducing the incidence of burnout in the education profession. Wellness involves a holistic approach in determining the positive coping skills and practices that an individual utilizes across all life areas. Research to determine if there is a relationship between burnout and specific wellness practices may provide educational leaders with methods to assist teachers in lowering the occurrence of burnout. The professional school counselor is one educational leader who …

joseph Ciarrochi
Living according to one׳s personal values has implications for wellbeing, and incongruence between personal and workplace values has been associated with burnout. Using the SGP Card Sorting Task (Ciarrochi & Bailey, 2008), this study explored mental health practitioners׳ personal life values and personal work-related values, and their relationships with wellbeing and burnout. Congruence between life and work-related values was related to wellbeing and perceived accomplishment at work. Those whose personal values were consistent with the commonly-shared values of a caring profession experienced lower burnout and higher personal wellbeing. Successfully pursuing one׳s work values predicted lower burnout and greater wellbeing. Honesty, …

The Relationship Between Teacher Training, Perceptions Of School Violence, And Burnout., Kristi Lynn Geissler
The Relationship Between Teacher Training, Perceptions Of School Violence, And Burnout., Kristi Lynn Geissler
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The present study seeks to contribute to the limited body of literature addressing teachers and school violence (SV). The development of SV is analyzed through an ecological perspective (i.e., Bronfenbrenner, 1979), that allows consideration of how SV is influenced by individual, classroom, school, and community factors. Literature suggests that few teachers report feeling prepared to respond to instances of violence prior to entering the field (Kandakai & King, 2002) and that it is not clear if teachers are receiving adequate training to equip them with strategies and coping skills for dealing with SV (Espelage et al., 2013; Sela-Shayovitz, 2009). The …

Data were subjected to factor analysis to examine relationships among measures of empathy, optimism, and burnout in a multivariate statistical model.
RESULTS: Factor analysis (principal component with oblique …
Why Empowering Salespeople Is A Double Edge Sword, Lucy Matthews
Why Empowering Salespeople Is A Double Edge Sword, Lucy Matthews
Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations
Salespeople in business-to-business markets are given autonomy to manage firms’ relationships with their customers. This autonomy implies that salespeople are responsible for making decisions that not only benefit but may also adversely impact customers (e.g., offer an account preferential treatment vs. terminate an established account). While numerous studies establish that autonomy (a critical facet of empowerment) has a positive impact on sales employee’s job outcomes, this study investigates the possibility that salesperson autonomy also has undesirable effects on salesperson job outcomes because it makes them responsible for decisions that have adverse consequences on the customers they are charged with satisfying. …

Objectives: Burnout has been viewed as a phase in the development of depression. However, supportive research is scarce. We examined whether burnout predicted depression among French school teachers.
Methods: We conducted a 2-wave, 21-month study involving 627 teachers (73% female) working in French primary and secondary schools. Burnout was assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory and depression with the 9-item depression module of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). The PHQ-9 grades depressive symptom severity and provides a provisional diagnosis of major depression. Depression was treated both as a continuous and categorical variable using linear and logistic regression analyses. We controlled …
A Phenomenological Exploration Of Marriage And Family Therapists And Their Experiences With Mindfulness As A Means Of Self-Care To Sustain Productive Professional Practices, Isaac Farin
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
This research study was designed to record and consider lived experiences from marriage and family therapists (MFTs) who have experience with mindfulness as a form of selfcare in sustaining productive professional practices. The primary focus of this project was to understand, through interviews, reports from marriage and family therapists about how they utilize such mindfulness as a form of self-care for their professional practice. This research study has sought insight into whether mindfulness self-care could be helpful in maintaining effective resiliency in professional practice. I used a phenomenological approach, specifically Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) interviewing, to gather reports from participants …
Interpersonal Rejection Sensitivity Predicts Burnout: A Prospective Study, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent
Interpersonal Rejection Sensitivity Predicts Burnout: A Prospective Study, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Laurent
Publications and Research
We examined whether interpersonal rejection sensitivity (IRS)—the hallmark of atypical depression – prospectively predicted burnout, controlling for baseline symptoms, history of depressive disorders, antidepressant intake, gender, age, and length of employment (mean between-assessment duration: 21 months; n = 578; 74% female). IRS was related to a 119% increased risk of burnout at follow-up. Three of four burned out participants reported to be affected by IRS, or 2.5 times the rate observed in participants with no (or subthreshold) burnout symptoms. Our study highlights a dispositional factor in burnout’s etiology also known to be a key component of atypical depression’s etiology. The …

After-Hours Mobile Technology Use And Its Effect On Burnout Experienced By Student Affairs Professionals, Anne Stark
Open Access Dissertations
This study examined the possible effect between the after-hours mobile technology use by student affairs professionals and work place burnout experienced by student affairs professionals. Similar to Owens (2014), data for this study were collected by employing the Maslach Burnout Inventory (Christina Maslach, Jackson, & Leiter, 1986). The collected data in this study were explored by the statistical method of multiple regression. While the number of responses was not high enough to determine statistically significant differences, the data did not show a strong correlation between after-hours mobile technology use and workplace burnout experienced by student affairs professionals.
Individual And Work Related Factors Of Burnout Among Direct Care Staff, Jamie Roberts
Individual And Work Related Factors Of Burnout Among Direct Care Staff, Jamie Roberts
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Burnout is the response to prolonged emotional, situational, and interpersonal stress of one's job. Direct care staff, who work with challenging populations, are at increased risk for burnout. Maslach's and Leiter's multidimensional model of burnout posits that the relationship between an individual and his or her occupation leads to either engagement or burnout. This study aimed to determine if the associations between the 6 areas of worklife (workload, control, community, reward, fairness, and values) and the 3 aspects of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) identified in this model are moderated by age and gender. The study included 117 …

US Army Research
After more than a decade of war, the US military continues to place significant emphasis on psychological health and resilience. While research and programs that focus on the broader military community’s resilience continue to emerge, less is known about and until recently little focus has been placed on military medical provider resilience. In this article, we review the literature on military medical provider resilience, provide an overview of the programmatic and technological advances designed to sustain and develop military medical provider resilience, and finally offer recommendations for future research.
How To Best Support Clinical Social Workers In Their Practive With Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Anna N. Query
How To Best Support Clinical Social Workers In Their Practive With Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Anna N. Query
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This research set out to explore how clinical social workers working with children who have experienced trauma are supported in their practice, both at an individual and organizational level. Given the concepts of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, secondary trauma and burnout as a natural part of working with trauma, it is essential to make sure that clinical social workers are properly supported in their work. With the theoretical understanding of person-in-environment, individuals must be understood in their environment, as both individual and environment constantly influence one another. For this qualitative study, twelve clinical social workers across the United States, in …
Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity As Predictors Of Burnout In Special And General Education Co-Teachers, Cassandra L. Moss
Role Conflict And Role Ambiguity As Predictors Of Burnout In Special And General Education Co-Teachers, Cassandra L. Moss
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act of 2004, special and general educators teach together in many classrooms. Co-teachers are subject to a variety of stressors, including role challenges for teachers who are accustomed to working independently. Research has shown that role ambiguity and role conflict are associated with burnout among special and general educators. However, no prior study has examined whether these role factors contribute to burnout among special and general educators in co-teaching roles. This study was based upon role stress theory in relation to the constructs of burnout. The sample included 72 special educators and 73 …

Spiritual Transcendence And Burnout Rate Among Psychologists And Social Workers Working With Severely Mentally Ill Patients, Cynthia Fuhrer Cameron
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Burnout is a psychological syndrome caused by occupational stress, which often manifests in mental health professionals who experience demanding and emotionally charged relationships with clients. Guided by the equity theory, this study examined the relationship between spiritual transcendence and burnout in psychologists and social workers who work with severely mentally ill patients after accounting for specific personality traits. Constructs were measured via the Spiritual Transcendence scale (STS), Maslach Burnout inventory (MBI), and the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). Sixty eight psychologists and social workers were selected from psychiatric hospitals, community centers, and private practice in Nevada to participate in the study. …
