We investigate online active learning techniques for classification tasks in data stream mining applications. Unlike traditional learning approaches (either batch or online learning) that often require to request the class label of each incoming instance, online active learning queries only a subset of informative incoming instances to update the classification model, which aims to maximize classification performance using minimal human labeling effort during the entire online stream data mining task. An important technique for learning, feedback has been described as responses to students’ behaviors, tasks, assignments, and outcomes. In this study, the researcher used a new kind of feedback message called an Emotional Motivational Feedback Message (EMFEM). EMFEM is a feedback message which includes motivational strategies and emotional content for motivating and encouraging students to learn more and to focus on a specific topic. The recent and rapid growth of technology during the last several years has dramatically increased the number of new online degree programs and courses in the United States. As a result, enrollment into these online programs and courses has also increased. The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) estimated there was a total of 12.2 million enrollments in college-level credit-granting distance education courses in 2006-07. Technology is often touted as the savior of education (Collins & Haverson, 2009). However, is technology the panacea that it is made out to be? This paper is an extended conversation among a group of faculty members at three different universities and their attitudes and beliefs about technology and education. Three professors shared their pro-technology stance and three took a less favorable view. A posttest-only, quasi-experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of two problem-based learning environments on students’ self-regulation of learning and students’ level of cognitive load. The study involved 40 graduate nursing students from two intact nursing courses where problem-based learning was the principal method of instruction. Twenty students from an online course and 20 students from a face-to-face course received one ill-structured problem per week in their respective courses over the 4-week duration of this study. The paper proposes both theoretical and empirical approaches to differentiate the Community of Inquiry (CoI) in online classes at individual and group levels. Following the example of research on organizational climate, it assesses the strength of shared perceptions of teaching presence, social presence and cognitive presence. The paper develops a theory of composition that relates isomorphic constructs of these presences at the individual and the class levels.
