Technology is often touted as the savior of education (Collins & Haverson, 2009). However, is technology the panacea that it is made out to be? This paper is an extended conversation among a group of faculty members at three different universities and their attitudes and beliefs about technology and education. Three professors shared their pro-technology stance and three took a less favorable view. A posttest-only, quasi-experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of two problem-based learning environments on students’ self-regulation of learning and students’ level of cognitive load. The study involved 40 graduate nursing students from two intact nursing courses where problem-based learning was the principal method of instruction. The paper proposes both theoretical and empirical approaches to differentiate the Community of Inquiry (CoI) in online classes at individual and group levels. Following the example of research on organizational climate, it assesses the strength of shared perceptions of teaching presence, social presence and cognitive presence.
