Thématiques Dans Les Récits Des Enfants Cachés Dans L'Univers Catholique En France, Carmen P. Mccarron
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
French Article 14 Jurisdiction, Viewed From The United States, Kevin M. Clermont, John R.B. Palmer
French Article 14 Jurisdiction, Viewed From The United States, Kevin M. Clermont, John R.B. Palmer
Kevin M. Clermont
French courts have broadly read their Civil Code’s oddly written Article 14 as authorizing territorial jurisdiction over virtually any action brought by a plaintiff of French nationality. This study traces the history of this provision from its genesis two hundred years ago to its extension under the current Brussels Regulation. Nevertheless, for a number of reasons, French plaintiffs do not use Article 14 all that much, other than in status suits such as matrimonial matters or in situations where the defendant has assets in France (or now, under the Brussels regime, in Europe). The actual use of Article 14 ends …

During the late 1950's the French film industry's hard-won financial stability during the Occupation and liberation years had all but disappeared. Combined with the dwindling, unpredictable nature of French audiences, the multi-star, literary adaptation dramas French studios produced were no longer reliable. In response to these dilemmas a transformation took place in French cinema. Known as the nouvelle vague (or French New Wave), the movement was largely, but not completely, a reaction to France's declining film industry. The nation as a whole was undergoing significant change and growth during the 1950s. From the Algerian conflict, the Fourth Republic's collapse and …

Reacting To The Past: The French Revolution From The Eyes Of History Students, Khristina May, Stephanie Thompson, Brent Wacho
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
From the Editorial Introduction:
Dr. Allison Belzer, Assistant Professor of History, began to utilize the “Rousseau, Burke, and Revolution in France, 1791” text in her Civilization classes and Modern France course. The students accepted the challenge and put forward remarkable work, far more insightful than seen in traditional lecture formats. The students were all assigned roles within the factions Jacobin, Noble, Clergy, Moderates, the crowd, and individual characters like King Louis XVI, Marquis de Lafayette, lawyer, doctor, journalist, and rural delegate. Every group was given delegates and power just as they were historically distributed. The students got a chance to …

The Perceived Religiousness Of The Repertoire Of The Muslim Minority In France, Brian Mawyer
The Perceived Religiousness Of The Repertoire Of The Muslim Minority In France, Brian Mawyer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
France is a secular society with a deeply rooted Catholic tradition. This environment affects the acceptability of demonstrations of Muslim religious identity. Muslim immigrants to France are often ghettoized into rent controlled housing in suburbs around the cities. Rejected from French society, these immigrants cling to what links them together, which is their religion. By the third generation, fluency in heritage languages declines greatly, yet the youth of the banlieues re-appropriate Arabic words into their French speech, leading to the emergence of a Muslim repertoire that is not always accepted by speakers of standard French. This thesis surveys French people …

The Effect Of Single Women And The Early Modern Economy, Bridget Heussler
The Effect Of Single Women And The Early Modern Economy, Bridget Heussler
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Historians have shown that women are generally more accepted as workers within thriving economic environments. This is particularly true of eighteenth-century Europe, a time of economic transition, expansion and social flux. Historians have indicated a rise of never-married women in eighteenth-century towns and cities, but our knowledge of women's specific roles and contributions during this time of economic expansion remains slim. My research examined and compared tax records from the parish of St. Philibert in Dijon, France between 1730 and 1750. An examination of the tax records allows historians one indication of the overall economic contribution of individual householders within …
German, French And British Manufacturing Strategies Compared: A Growth Towards Each Other, Arnoud De Meyer
German, French And British Manufacturing Strategies Compared: A Growth Towards Each Other, Arnoud De Meyer
Arnoud DE MEYER
Manufacturing has gained over the last years in attention as a tool to create competitive advantage. For four years now a survey has been carried out by a research team at Insead to build a database on the manufacturing strategies as they are defined and implemented by large European companies. In this paper some of the 1987 data are presented, and a comparison of manufacturing strategies of large companies in the three most important European countries is made. Though the most important conclusion is that there are only slight differences between the three countries, one can see some difference in …
Breaking Social Confinement: An Analysis Of Eighteenth-Century Women In The French Economy, Meghan Turok
Breaking Social Confinement: An Analysis Of Eighteenth-Century Women In The French Economy, Meghan Turok
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The study of single women in early modern Europe (1500-1800) has become a focus of scholarly examination during the past ten years. Historians have recognized that female singleness was often detested as it rejected the societal expectations of women that included domesticity and submission. But what they have yet to identify are the valuable economic contributions single women as a whole provided to society. In order to offer further research to this study, I examined 1795 census records from the Archives départementals de la Côte d’Or in Dijon, France that I translated from French to English. The census I examined …
The Hierarchy Of Rococo Women Seen Through Fashion Paintings, Sanda Brighidin
The Hierarchy Of Rococo Women Seen Through Fashion Paintings, Sanda Brighidin
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The style of Rococo evokes a variety of feminine attributions; women were usually depicted in works of art in a decorative manner. Many of the interpretations of these paintings focus on the luxurious clothes and lavish backgrounds. Artists like Jean-Antoine Watteau and Francois Boucher were responsible for elevating a very elegant view of Rococo women of Rococo within the public’s eyes. But there were also depictions of non-aristocratic women that were geared more to the middle class (bourgeois). After reading a number of articles and book chapters on Jean-Baptiste- Simeon Chardin, and visiting the Louvre museum in Paris, I became …
A Culinary Revolution: The First Celebrity Chef And The Unification Of French Culture, Lindsey Teel
A Culinary Revolution: The First Celebrity Chef And The Unification Of French Culture, Lindsey Teel
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw tremendous change and social upheaval in France. The monarchy was overthrown because of the French Revolution, a new system of government was being implemented and the country of France was starting to come together as one nation. Many different cultural aspects can be credited, but one in particular was the cuisine. Antonin Carême, the first celebrity chef, embodied Enlightenment ideals and believed that all people regardless of their status should have the ability to eat well. He challenged old cooking methods and techniques and presented France with a new cuisine that would …
Corporate Governance Sex Regimes: Peripheral Thoughts From Across The Atlantic, Horatia Muir Watt
Corporate Governance Sex Regimes: Peripheral Thoughts From Across The Atlantic, Horatia Muir Watt
Pace International Law Review
The very recent and highly mediatized “Declaration of the 343 Salauds”, where 343 (male) signatures in support of prostitution in a form designed to echo the highly significant declaration of as many women in 1971 in favor of the legalization of abortion, sheds particularly interesting light upon debate about sex regimes in connection with French law. France has recently introduced compulsory quotas for women in corporate boards after imposing la parité for public appointments. A comparative perspective, confronting this recent legislative development from across the Atlantic with policy views on affirmative action and philosophical conceptions of diversity in the United …

To Each His Own Reality: How The Analysis Of Artistic Exchanges In Cold War Europe Challenges Categories, Mathilde Arnoux
To Each His Own Reality: How The Analysis Of Artistic Exchanges In Cold War Europe Challenges Categories, Mathilde Arnoux
Artl@s Bulletin
How to reconstruct artistic relationships among four European countries, situated on both sides of the Iron Curtain, during the period that commenced post-Stalin and lasted until the fall of the Berlin Wall? This is one of the questions that faces the research program To Each His Own Reality: The notion of the real in the art of France, West Germany, East Germany and Poland between 1960 and 1989, which was initiated in January 2011. The paper discusses syntheses of the questions that the research team is facing, descriptions of its methodology, an analysis of preliminary results and what they allow …
