Newly available prescription data has been used along with census data to develop a localised method for predicting pharmaceutical concentrations in sewage influent and effluent for England, and applied to a case study: the steroid estrogens estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol in a selected catchment. The prescription data allows calculation of the mass consumed of synthetic estrogens, while use of highly localised census data improves predictions of naturally excreted estrogens by accounting for regional variations in population demographics. This serves two key purposes; to increase the accuracy of predictions in general, and to call attention to the need for more accurate …

Particle Swarms In Confining Geometries, Eric Robert Boomsma Oct 2014

Particle Swarms In Confining Geometries, Eric Robert Boomsma

Open Access Dissertations

The transport of micro- and nano-particles in subsurface fluid deposits is an area of increasing interest due to the rising use of these particles for consumer and industrial purposes. Subsurface particle transport is complicated by the presence of fractures and fracture networks which govern the paths that particles will be able to take. In this thesis, subsurface particle transport will be investigated using particle swarms; collections of hydro-dynamically interacting particles which exhibit group behavior. The effects of fluid viscosity, particle properties, fracture geometry, and fracture aperture on swarm behavior were experimentally investigated. ^ Swarm parameters were examined in time with …

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane Sep 2014

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fluid diodes are fluidic devices that enhance fluid flow in a particular direction while inhibiting it in the opposite direction without the use of moving parts. This is accomplished through the use of nozzle shaped geometry on one side of the diode, and cusp shaped geometry on the opposing side. Fluid meets very little resistance as is travels though the nozzle side of the diode. The cusps on the other side of the diode reduce the effective flow area, thereby inhibiting flow. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a fluid diode installed in a reconstructed …

Physically Based Preconditioning Techniques Applied To The First Order Particle Transport And To Fluid Transport In Porous Media, Michael Rigley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Solving linear systems is at the heart of many scientific applications from the PreAlgebra's student solving for x and y for basic geometry problems to the computational scientist solving billions of equations with billions of variables for weather forecasting, modeling fusion reactions, or web search algorithms. In this study we look at improving the efficiency of solving large linear systems that result from two applications. The first includes linear systems that result from solving differential equations for the movement of atomic particles in particle emitting, void, and absorbing regions. The second includes solving linear systems that result from solving differential …

Water Reclamation From Shale Gas Drilling Flow-Back Fluid Using A Novel Forward Osmosis-Vacuum Membrane Distillation Hybrid System, Xue-Mei Li, Baolong Zhao, Zhongwei Wang, Ming Xie, Jianfeng Song, Long Nghiem, Tao He, Chi Yang, Chunxia Li, Ghang Chen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study examined the performance of a novel hybrid system of forward osmosis (FO) combined with vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) for reclaiming water from shale gas drilling flow-back fluid (SGDF). In the hybrid FO-VMD system, water permeated through the FO membrane into a draw solution reservoir, and the VMD process was used for draw solute recovery and clean water production. Using a SGDF sample obtained from a drilling site in China, the hybrid system could achieve almost 90% water recovery. Quality of the reclaimed water was comparable to that of bottled water. In the hybrid FO-VMD system, FO functions as …

Correlation Between The Fluid Structure Interaction Method And Experimental Analysis Of Bending Stress Of A Variable Capacity Compressor Suction Valve, Julio Cesar Silva, Eduardo Arceno Jan 2014

Correlation Between The Fluid Structure Interaction Method And Experimental Analysis Of Bending Stress Of A Variable Capacity Compressor Suction Valve, Julio Cesar Silva, Eduardo Arceno

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The valves are responsible for controlling the systems of suction and discharge of reciprocating compressors, for this reason they are considered the principal components of the manifold subsystem. Although usually the valves present a simple geometry, these components are difficult to design, because they involve a nonlinear analysis, and stochastic events need to be considered to succeed in your project. Among other care that the engineer should take, the bending stress levels developed during operation of the compressor have very importance. The purpose of this paper is to show the correlation between the application of the numerical method known as …
