Servant Leadership To Toxic Leadership: Power Of Influence Over Power Of Control, David B. Ross, Rande Matteson, Julie Exposito
Servant Leadership To Toxic Leadership: Power Of Influence Over Power Of Control, David B. Ross, Rande Matteson, Julie Exposito
Faculty Presentations
To lead, you must serve. Servant leadership is the systematic process of developing the needs of servants ahead of those leaders found within private or public institutions. The principle behind effective leadership is based on the interplay of responsibility, respect, care, and working with people, not against people. Ultimately, leadership is about character and substance. Using the distinct characteristics of servant leadership to promote and foster the development of successful individuals is one of the fundamental concepts of servant leaders. Honest and caring concern for others leads to empowerment and emotional support which inspires the members to embrace the needs …

Young And Older Adults’ Beliefs About Effective Ways To Mitigate Age-Related Memory Decline, Michael Horhorta, Tara T. Lineweaver, Monique Ositelu, Kristi Summers, Christopher Herzog
Tara T. Lineweaver
This study investigated whether young and older adults vary in their beliefs about the impact of various mitigating factors on age-related memory decline. Eighty young (ages 18–23) and eighty older (ages 60–82) participants reported their beliefs about their own memory abilities and the strategies that they use in their everyday lives to attempt to control their memory. Participants also reported their beliefs about memory change with age for hypothetical target individuals who were described as using (or not using) various means to mitigate memory decline. There were no age differences in personal beliefs about control over current or future memory …
Control Of Responses Of Smart Plate Structures Under Non-Stationary Random Excitations, Xiaojian Yang
Control Of Responses Of Smart Plate Structures Under Non-Stationary Random Excitations, Xiaojian Yang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis is concerned with an investigation of the control of responses of plate structures with piezoelectric layers and under complicated excitations modeled as a non-stationary random process. The plate structures and piezoelectric layers are both discretized by the mixed formulation finite element method (FEM).
The investigation consists of three parts. The first part is a literature survey and theoretical development. The second part is the eigenvalue solution and computation of uncontrolled response statistics of laminated plate structures under nonstationary random excitations. The final part is the introduction and application of the stochastic central difference (SCD) method that was presented …
Flatness-Based Control Methodologies To Improve Frequency Regulation In Power Systems With High Penetration Of Wind, Maryam Hassani Variani
Flatness-Based Control Methodologies To Improve Frequency Regulation In Power Systems With High Penetration Of Wind, Maryam Hassani Variani
Doctoral Dissertations
To allow for high penetration of distributed generation and alternative energy units, it is critical to minimize the complexity of generator controls and to minimize the need for close coordination across regions. We propose that existing controls be replaced by a two-tier structure of local control operating within a global context of situational awareness. Flatness as an extension of controllability for non-linear systems is a key to enabling planning and optimization at various levels of the grid in this structure. In this study, flatness-based control for: one, Automatic Generation Control (AGC) of a multi-machine system including conventional generators; and two, …
Biology And Control Of The Bed Bug Cimex Lectularius L., Kevin Hinson
Biology And Control Of The Bed Bug Cimex Lectularius L., Kevin Hinson
All Dissertations
After vanishing from the public eye for more than 50 years, bed bugs have resurged to become one of the most widely discussed and heavily researched insect pests in the westernized world. Our inability to prevent and successfully treat infestations has been the driving force behind this wave of research. I addressed gaps in our understanding of bed bugs by examining behavioral and life history characteristics, as well as insecticide application responses. I showed that natural-based products are generally ineffective against bed bugs, particularly when used as a residual treatment. I also found that bed bugs may be killed through …
Exact Controllability Of The Lazer-Mckenna Suspension Bridge Equation, Lanxuan Yu
Exact Controllability Of The Lazer-Mckenna Suspension Bridge Equation, Lanxuan Yu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It is well known that suspension bridges may display certain oscillations under external aerodynamic forces. Since the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge in 1940, suspension bridge models have been studied by many researchers. Based upon the fundamental nonlinearity in suspension bridges that the stays connecting the supporting cables and the roadbed resist expansion, but do not resist compression, new models describing oscillations in suspension bridges have been developed by Lazer and McKenna [Lazer and McKenna (1990)]. Except for a paper by Leiva [Leiva (2005)], there have been very few work on controls of the Lazer-McKenna suspension bridge models …
Pmsm Sensorless Speed Control Drive, Youakim Kalaani, Rami J. Haddad, Adel El-Shahat
Pmsm Sensorless Speed Control Drive, Youakim Kalaani, Rami J. Haddad, Adel El-Shahat
Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Publications
Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) are very popular in many industrial applications such as in mechatronics, automotive, energy storage flywheels, centrifugal compressors, vacuum pumps, and robotics. This paper proposes Sensorless control for a PMSM speed drive which is based on a closed loop control system using a proportional and integral (PI) controller that is designed to operate in flux weakening regions under a constant torque angle. This Sensorless element was adopted for best estimating the PMSM rotor position based on its performance characteristics eliminating the need for speed sensors which are usually required in such control applications. To achieve this …
Family Limited Partnerships: Discounts, Options, And Disappearing Value, Karen C. Burke, Grayson M.P. Mccouch
Family Limited Partnerships: Discounts, Options, And Disappearing Value, Karen C. Burke, Grayson M.P. Mccouch
Karen Burke
Family partnerships have been become increasingly popular as a means of avoiding estate and gift taxes. As other estate freezing techniques have been closed off by statutory anti-abuse rules, estate planners have increasingly resorted to partnerships as a vehicle for transferring assets within a family at deeply discounted values. Discounts ranging from one-third to over one-half of the value of the underlying assets are routinely claimed, and often allowed, based on lack of marketability and lack of control, even where these disabilities have no lasting or ascertainable economic effect. Nevertheless, the use of family partnerships to suppress value for transfer …

Joint Architecture For Reusable Vehicle-Integrated Software (J.A.R.V.I.S), Anthony Mark Kane
Joint Architecture For Reusable Vehicle-Integrated Software (J.A.R.V.I.S), Anthony Mark Kane
Open Access Theses
An integrated software architecture for development of unmanned research vehicles is developed. It has been created under the premise that all unmanned vehicles require a core set of functionality that is common across platforms and that priority should be to the readability and reusability of the code base. The architecture defines the top-level system interfaces allowing internal algorithms to be manipulated without affecting the rest of the system. A robust aerospace toolbox has been developed that provides a means to rapidly prototype algorithms without the need of recreating commonly used functions or the use of expensive, proprietary software.
Work Made For Hire -- Analyzing The Multifactor Balancing Test, Ryan Vacca
Work Made For Hire -- Analyzing The Multifactor Balancing Test, Ryan Vacca
Florida State University Law Review
Authorship of copyrighted works is oftentimes controlled by the 1976 Copyright Act’s work made for hire doctrine. This doctrine states that works created by employees within the scope of their employment result in the employer, not the employee, being the author and initial copyright owner. One key determination in this analysis is whether the hired party is an employee or independent contractor. In 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court, in CCNV v. Reid, set forth a list of factors to distinguish employees from independent contractors. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court did not give further guidance on how to balance these factors. …
A Behavioral And Biopsychological Investigation Of The Role Of The Illusion Of Control And Perseverative Chasing Between Problem And Non-Problem Gamblers, Brett Evan Bauchner
A Behavioral And Biopsychological Investigation Of The Role Of The Illusion Of Control And Perseverative Chasing Between Problem And Non-Problem Gamblers, Brett Evan Bauchner
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The illusion of control is associated with problem gambling. The perception that one is in control of a random event, when in reality there is no control, can facilitate problem gambling behaviors. The degree or extent of control may activate physiological mechanism of increased excitation and reward that reinforce gambling. In the studies presented here, performance on simulated gambling tasks that provided varying levels gambling participation were compared to physiological measures of behavioral activation in problem gambler and nongamblers. Participants watched video clips of three horseraces scenarios that permitted different degrees of participation and control over wagering. Concurrently saliva samples …
Control Of A Spacecraft Using Mixed Momentum Exchange Devices, Blake J. Currie
Control Of A Spacecraft Using Mixed Momentum Exchange Devices, Blake J. Currie
Master's Theses
Hardware configurations, a control law, and a steering law are developed for a mixed hardware spacecraft that uses both control moment gyros and reaction wheels. Replacing one or more gyros in a spacecraft with a reaction wheel has potential for cost savings while still achieving much greater performance than using reaction wheels alone. Several simulated tests are run to compare the performance to a traditional all reaction wheel or all control moment gyro spacecraft, including analysis of failure modes and singular configurations. The mixed system performed similarly to all gyro systems, responding within 6% of the gyro system’s time for …

Controlling cold strip profile is a difficult and significant problem has been found in industry during thin strip rolling. At present choosing the new type of strip rolling mill is the one of main methods to control the strip shape quality in cold rolling. The influences of rolling process parameters such as the work roll cross angle and work roll shifting on the strip shape and profile of thin strip are recognised throughout this study. The results show that the roll crossing and shifting is efficient way to control the strip shape. The increase of the work roll crossing angle …

Reconstructing The Effective Control Criterion In Extraterritorial Human Rights Breaches: Direct Attribution Of Wrongfulness, Due Diligence, And Concurrent Responsibility, Vassilis P. Tzevelekos
Michigan Journal of International Law
As one of the core elements of statehood, territory is inextricably linked to sovereignty. For this reason, jurisdiction is primarily territorial. In principle, the sphere of power of the sovereign state—including its competence to exercise legislative, judicial, and executive authority—applies within the confines of its own territory. Otherwise, the state risks interfering with the sovereignty of other states and thereby breaking one of the fundamental principles of Public International Law (PIL), that of sovereign equality. The principle of sovereign equality dictates that all assertions of jurisdiction have to be balanced with the sovereign rights of other states. This is why …
Real-Time Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks For Cyber-Physical Systems, Abusayeed Saifullah
Real-Time Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks For Cyber-Physical Systems, Abusayeed Saifullah
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
A cyber-physical system (CPS) employs tight integration of, and
coordination between computational, networking, and physical elements. Wireless sensor-actuator networks provide a new communication technology for a broad range of CPS applications such as process control, smart manufacturing, and data center management. Sensing and control in these systems need to meet stringent real-time performance requirements on communication latency in challenging environments. There have been limited results on real-time scheduling theory for wireless sensor-actuator networks. Real-time transmission scheduling and analysis for wireless sensor-actuator networks requires new methodologies to deal with unique characteristics of wireless communication. Furthermore, the performance of a wireless control …
Evolution Of Chattel Paper: From Possession To Control, Thomas E. Plank
Evolution Of Chattel Paper: From Possession To Control, Thomas E. Plank
Scholarly Works
Since its inception, Article 9 has authorized both non-possessory assignment of chattel paper perfected by the filing of a financing statement and a possessory assignment perfected by possession. As a result, tangible chattel paper is “quasi-negotiable” because certain purchasers for value with possession can have priority over previously perfected secured parties. The 2000 revision of Article 9 authorized security agreements evidenced by an electronic record or records and created electronic chattel paper as a new sub-type of collateral. To extend quasi-negotiability to electronic chattel paper, it also introduced the concept of “control” as an analogue to possession of tangible chattel …
Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent
Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent
Doctoral Dissertations
What do community interpreting for the Deaf in western societies, conference interpreting for the European Parliament, and language brokering in international management have in common? Academic research and professional training have historically emphasized the linguistic and cognitive challenges of interpreting, neglecting or ignoring the social aspects that structure communication. All forms of interpreting are inherently social; they involve relationships among at least three people and two languages. The contexts explored here, American Sign Language/English interpreting and spoken language interpreting within the European Parliament, show that simultaneous interpreting involves attitudes, norms and values about intercultural communication that overemphasize information and discount …

Model Predictive Control Of Water Levels In A Navigation Canal Affected By Resonance Waves, Klaudia Horváth, Eric Duviella, Mihály Petreczky, Lala Rajaoarisoa, Karine Chucket
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
In order to operate navigation canals several requirements need to be met: keeping minimum ecological flow, flood protection, but also for safe operation the water level has to be kept within a certain range around the normal navigation level. The water level is disturbed by several factors: known (measured tributaries) and unknown (unknown tributaries, rain) inputs. However, the most important one is the operation of the locks. If the navigation reach is bounded by locks that overcome large elevation differences, their operation can create big disturbances. These locks should be operated fast enough to allow the crossing of several boats, …
Feedback Speed Control Of A Small Two-Stroke Internal Combustion Engine That Propels An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Paul D. Fjare
Feedback Speed Control Of A Small Two-Stroke Internal Combustion Engine That Propels An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Paul D. Fjare
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) require intelligent control of their power source. Small UAV are typically powered by electric motors or small two-stroke internal combustion (IC) engines. Small IC engines allow for longer flight times but are more difficult to control and cause significant ground noise. A hybrid operation that uses the engine at high altitudes and the electric motors at low altitudes is desired. This would allow for extended flight with acceptable ground noise levels. Since the engine can not be restarted in the air it must be able to remain at idle for an extended time without stalling. A …

The psychological and physical well-being of students is a cause for concern. For the majority of the student population this means substantial changes in healthy behaviours including eating habits. The current research was aimed at investigating integrative eating in 170 Australian university students. Self-awareness and health locus of control were measured in order to assess their relative impact on positive integrative eating practices. The self-report measures included Your Personal Eating Style Profile, Forms A and B of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale, and the Situational Self-Awareness Scale. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses provided tentative support for the hypothesis that …
Observability Of User-Interfaces For Linear Hybrid Systems Under Collaborative Control, Tasha Hammond
Observability Of User-Interfaces For Linear Hybrid Systems Under Collaborative Control, Tasha Hammond
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Human interaction with automation is ubiquitous, occurring in many cyberphysical systems such as cell phones, automobiles, and commercial aircraft. When interacting with such systems, human users are only exposed to a simplified representation the complex system structure in the form of an interface. The human can observe system outputs and make control inputs via this interface. Problems with human-automation interaction occur when the interface does not provide enough information or provides misinformation about the underlying system, such that the human cannot determine the current state of the automation. The user's knowledge of the current system state and prediction of the …

Induced Post-Activation Potentiation And Its Relationship To Performance Variables In The Block Start, Chidiriayi Enyia, Michael W. Olson
Research Papers
Post-activation potentiation (PAP) is an induced physical state commonly utilized in training and competition environments. There are a wide variety of methods used to induce PAP but the mechanisms and most effective means specific to the different speed/power events need to be investigated further for the potential of maximizing performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of drop jumps on maximum vertical ground reaction force on the push-off phase after the first touchdown step and its relationship to block start performance. Participants included 3 male and 3 female, Division I collegiate track and field athletes …

The Effect Of Learning And Cost Optimization On Line Of Balance Scheduling, Kareem Essam Zahran
The Effect Of Learning And Cost Optimization On Line Of Balance Scheduling, Kareem Essam Zahran
Theses and Dissertations
The increase in populations throughout the past years introduced the need for improving and increasing countries’ infrastructure. Moreover, there has been an increasing demand for dwelling units ranging from small economic housing blocks to high-rise buildings and residential villa compounds. These projects are known by their repetitive nature, where a constant unit is repeated several times. Scheduling techniques that consider the learning effect as an influencing parameter in calculating productivity rates can improve the effectiveness of the scheduling process. This achieves more realistic forecasts resulting in optimum utilization of resources and better control during implementation phases. Linear scheduling techniques are …
