This manuscript is a collection of musical compositions written by Micah Hood while a graduate student at the University of New Mexico. Each musical work fulfills a composition portfolio requirement as stated in the 2012 — 2013 Music Theory/Composition Student Handbook: a piece with large orchestration, a piece featuring the voice, a piece featuring electronics, and a collaborative piece. Hood's composition portfolio contains original visual art, synopses and musical scores. Theses and Dissertations

Are the threshold experiences encountered between waking and sleeping similar to the liminal space between life and death? The sights, sounds, and bodily sensations experienced in the unconscious void blur the lines between the unknown and our conscious existence. Using the figure, I portray how the body might exist in these transitional moments. Through my investigations into sleep paralysis, dream states, and notions of an afterlife and the soul, I explore how we perceive the self in these altered states of consciousness.

An American Evensong: The Application Of An Anglican Worship Service To A Large-Scale Choral Concertpiece, David Anthony Pegel

Open Access Dissertations

An American Evensong (2014), an original choral work composed by the author, was commissioned by Dr. Angela Batey and the University of Tennessee Chamber Singers for their 2015 summer tour to the United Kingdom. The original manuscript, for choir and organ, was written to use for a traditional Anglican Evensong service in various English cathedrals. The work was then adapted into a suite for choir and orchestra, introducing Anglican liturgy to performances in the concert hall. The collection of choral rehearsal strategies used in the choirs at BYU has been an enlightening project. I have discovered and documented many effective pedagogical tools, methods, buzzwords, imageries, and vocalises. New possibilities for the project have opened up as well, which will allow me to carry the research forward into the coming years.

Perspectives Of European Boys About Their Voice Change And School Choral Singing: Developing The Possible Selves Of Adolescent Male Singers, Patrick K. Freer

Music Faculty Publications

This article reports analysis of interviews with 85 boys from England, Greece, Ireland and Spain about the voice change, school singing and choral music instruction. Consistent, former, and self-described non-singers were included. Data suggest consistency with much of the existing narrative literature about the experience of voice change. Unique topics included a sense of identity loss during voice change. Issues related to gender and sexuality-based bullying were explored. Boys offered numerous recommendations for teachers, including that teachers focus on vocal technique specific to male changing voices. Boys’ comments suggested a pattern of identity development consistent with the Possible Selves construct. …
