Info Lit 2.0 Or Deja Vu?, Patricia Anne Iannuzzi

Communications in Information Literacy

In 1999, ACRL convened a national task force to draft Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. ACRL has recently launched a revision to those standards. The original standards were influential because they helped advance a national need in higher education at the time: a shift to outcomes based learning. Fourteen years later, information literacy stands alongside oral and written communication, critical thinking and ethical reasoning as learning outcomes broadly acknowledged as needing to be integrated, with disciplinary content, into the curriculum. This author believes that, in contrast to the first process, the current recommendations for revision are focused on …

Refreshing Information Literacy: Learning From Recent British Information Literacy Models, Justine Martin Dec 2013

Refreshing Information Literacy: Learning From Recent British Information Literacy Models, Justine Martin

Communications in Information Literacy

Models play an important role in helping practitioners implement and promote information literacy. Over time models can lose relevance with the advances in technology, society, and learning theory. Practitioners and scholars often call for adaptations or transformations of these frameworks to articulate the learning needs in information literacy development. This study analyzes four recently published models from the United Kingdom. The initial findings were presented in a report for an ACRL taskforce reviewing the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. This article presents complementary, yet distinct findings from the same dataset that focus on reoccurring themes for information literacy …

Catching Companies Who Refuse To Go Green Red-Handed, Wylee Mcgreevy Dec 2013

Catching Companies Who Refuse To Go Green Red-Handed, Wylee Mcgreevy

Honors Theses

Recycling, planting trees, and bringing your own bags to the grocery store are some of the activities people regularly think about when it comes to sustainability. In the grand scheme of life, how much difference can one person make? What if there were stricter standards for corporations which accounted for their emission of pollutants? Environmental Accounting is a branch of accounting that is progressively gaining popularity and has the potential to redefine the standards of sustainability for companies. With integration of past proposals for a carbon tax and a cap and trade system, a new proposal could be formed that …

A Rapidly Moving Target: Conformance With E-Health Standards For Mobile Computing, Patricia A.H. Williams, Vincent B. Mccauley

Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference

The rapid adoption and evolution of mobile applications in health is posing significant challenges in terms of standards development, standards adoption, patient safety, and patient privacy. This is a complex continuum to navigate. There are many competing demands from the standards development process, to the use by clinicians and patients. In between there are compliance and conformance measures to be defined to ensure patient safety, effective use with integration into clinical workflow, and the protection of data and patient privacy involved in data collection and exchange. The result is a composite and intricate mixture of stakeholders, legislation, and policy together …

Marion Meiers (1941-2018)

The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) was commissioned by the Department of Education in Victoria to undertake an investigation of current best-practice approaches to ensuring consistency of teacher judgements against P-10 state-wide standards. The investigation encompassed national and international approaches that had been implemented or were under development. A key objective of the investigation was that the approaches identified should be based on current information, research and best practice, and that they should be supportive of the continued development of a learning and assessment culture in Victorian schools. The report of the investigation was required to provide key baseline …

Setting The Standards For Sessional Staff: Quality Learning And Teaching, Marina Harvey Oct 2013

Setting The Standards For Sessional Staff: Quality Learning And Teaching, Marina Harvey

Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice

Across the Australian Higher Education sector a focus on quality is driving a new paradigm for learning and teaching: quality standards. One challenge is to engage all academics with this progress towards systematic quality enhancement and assurance. Sessional staff, who provide most of the face-to-face teaching in Australian universities, remain at the periphery of learning and teaching. Any development of standards must therefore proactively address the role of sessional staff in attaining and achieving quality learning and teaching.

Building on seminal research on sessional staff, this paper argues the need for standards as a potential strategy for quality learning and …

Human Rights And Workers’ Rights In The United States, Lance Compa Oct 2013

Human Rights And Workers’ Rights In The United States, Lance Compa

Lance A Compa

[Excerpt] Over the past 50 years, a comprehensive body of international law has affirmed human rights to which all workers are entitled, including the right to form unions and bargain collectively. Although the U.S. government has committed itself to protecting these rights, many American employers fail to live up to these international human rights standards for workers. American workers routinely confront a shameful pattern of threats, harassment, spying, firings and other reprisals against worker activists and a labor law system that is failing to deter such violations.

Towards A Growth Mindset In Assessment, Geoff N. Masters Oct 2013

Towards A Growth Mindset In Assessment, Geoff N. Masters

Assessment and Reporting

The approaches we take to assessing learning, the kinds of tasks we assign and the way we report success or failure at school send powerful messages to students not only about their own learning, but also about the nature of learning itself. Assessment and reporting processes shape student, parent and community beliefs about learning – sometimes in unintended ways.

This essay describes three general approaches to evaluating and providing feedback on the outcomes of learning. Each approach is based on a particular way of thinking about what it means to learn successfully, and each has implications for how students view …

Proposed Performance Standards For The Plank For Inclusion Consideration Into The Navy's Physical Readiness Test, David D. Peterson Oct 2013

Proposed Performance Standards For The Plank For Inclusion Consideration Into The Navy's Physical Readiness Test, David D. Peterson

Allied Health Faculty Publications

Since 1982, the U.S. Navy has used the curl-up as part of its semiannual physical readiness test (PRT) to assess core muscular endurance. Although no formal study has been conducted yet, there is speculation that the incorporation of the curl-up into the PRT has contributed to the navy's lower back injury rate. Therefore, there has been considerable interest as of late to identify a safer (and more operationally relevant) alternative to the curl-up. The following article takes a formal look at the standard front plank as a possible replacement for the curl-up for incorporation into the Navy's PRT.

Snow And Ice Performance Standards, Bob Mccullouch, Barry Partridge, Samy Noureldin Oct 2013

Snow And Ice Performance Standards, Bob Mccullouch, Barry Partridge, Samy Noureldin

JTRP Technical Reports

Performance standards are used extensively at INDOT to establish and measure performance in many different operations. One area that extensively uses standards is in Maintenance Operations. Currently INDOT has defined three Level of Service(LOS) standards for winter operations. These standards describe pavement conditions during winter weather events and are subjective in nature. A more quantifiable standard would improve the evaluation of winter operations.

This project produced a performance standard based on vehicle speeds during a storm impact period. The period is defined as the time between the beginning and end of a winter storm. The performance standard is modeled after …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

The INTERGROWTH-21st Project data management was structured incorporating both a centralised and decentralised system for the eight study centres, which all used the same database and standardised data collection instruments, manuals and processes. Each centre was responsible for the entry and validation of their country-specific data, which were entered onto a centralised system maintained by the Data Coordinating Unit in Oxford. A comprehensive data management system was designed to handle the very large volumes of data. It contained internal validations to prevent incorrect and inconsistent values being captured, and allowed online data entry by local Data Management Units, as well …

Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa

A unified protocol is essential to ensure that fetal ultrasound measurements taken in multicentre research studies are accurate and reproducible. This paper describes the methodology used to take two-dimensional, ultrasound measurements in the longitudinal, fetal growth component of the INTERGROWTH-21st Project. These standardised methods should minimise the systematic errors associated with pooling data from different study sites. They represent a model for carrying out similar research studies in the future.

Standards-Based Performance Assessment In The Comprehensive Music Classroom, Matthew Stephan Mcveigh

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of standards-based assessment practices within a music performance curriculum. This pre-survey, post-survey experimental treatment included 169 students, 97 parents, and 3 teachers from 3 school districts across Wisconsin. The results from this study indicated that music teachers rely on a variety of assessment strategies to monitor student achievement regardless of if they are using standards-based assessment practices; however, teachers who used standards-based assessment were more likely to use formal assessments to determine student achievement and were more likely to assess students both formally and informally on a regular basis. Furthermore, …

An Empirical Analysis Of A Network Of Expertise, Le Truc Viet, Minh Thap Nguyen Aug 2013

An Empirical Analysis Of A Network Of Expertise, Le Truc Viet, Minh Thap Nguyen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we analyze the network of expertise constructed from the interactions of users on the online questionanswering (QA) community of Stack Overflow. This community was built with the intention of helping users with their programming tasks and, thus, questions are expected to be highly factual. This also indicates that the answers one provides may be highly indicative of one's level of expertise on the subject matter. Therefore, our main concern is how to model and characterize the user's expertise based on the constructed network and its centrality measures. We used the user's reputation established on Stack Overflow as …
