Arab Spring: Women’S Empowerment In Algeria, Sangeeta Sinha Dec 2012

Arab Spring: Women’S Empowerment In Algeria, Sangeeta Sinha

Journal of International Women's Studies

The Arab Spring brought turmoil, upheaval and regime change in its wake. But these winds of change barely touched Algeria, and when it did we did not hear or see any women. In order to answer the two questions, the paper explores the status of women in present-day Algeria within a historical social and political context. Understanding the status of women is done by delving into some of the historical processes that Algerian women have had to confront. In order to understand the empowerment process, the study uses the empowerment framework as outlined by the Beijing Platform of action and …

A Study In Computerized Translation Testing (Ctt) For The Arabic Language, Amanda J. Kuhn

Theses and Dissertations

Translation quality assessment remains pertinent in both translation theory and in the industry. Specifically, the process of assessing a target document's quality or a person's translation competence involves a lot of time and money on the part of various governments, organizations and individuals. In response to this issue, this project builds on the ongoing research of Hague et al. (2012), who seek to determine the capabilities of a computerized translation test for the French-to-English and Spanish-to-English language pairs. Specifically, Hague et al. (2012) question whether a good score on a detect-and-correct style computerized translation test that is calculated by a …

Islamophobia In Contemporary America, Matthew Bryce Miller May 2012

Islamophobia In Contemporary America, Matthew Bryce Miller

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Before beginning, it is critical that I establish the scope of this thesis. In an attempt to make this thesis as rewarding and substantive as possible, I have attempted to narrowly construct boundaries for my writing by asking two primary research questions: How and why does Islamophobia manifest in contemporary America? It should be noted that the "How" is the primary focus of this work, while the "Why" is more of a supplementary addition. This was purposefully done because of the sheer magnitude and more objective nature of the first section. I am hesitant to devote too much time or …

Gender Discourse In Kitab Al-Tabaqat Al-Kubra: Deconstructing Ibn Sa'd'S Portrayal Of The Model Muslim Woman, Amira Naim Abou-Taleb Feb 2012

Gender Discourse In Kitab Al-Tabaqat Al-Kubra: Deconstructing Ibn Sa'd'S Portrayal Of The Model Muslim Woman, Amira Naim Abou-Taleb

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the impact of Ibn Saʽd’s (d. 230/845) historical context on his portrayal of the women of the Prohetic household in Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kubra (KTK). The KTK stands as the oldest, extant version of a biographical dictionary of the early Muslim community and has been canonized as an authority on the lives of individuals who are perceived as the exemplary model (al-salaf al-ṣaliḥ) for later Muslims generations. As critical historiography suggests a strong link between a historical narrative and the socio-political context in which it was created, the two hundred year gap between the time of authorship of …

Revival Of Mamluk Architecture In The 19th & 20th Centuries, Laila Kamal Marei

Theses and Dissertations

Mamluk Architecture was renowned for its grandeur. It had characteristic features that distinguished it from other styles and added to its unquestioned beauty. Cairo saw a revival of the Mamluk style in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century at the hands of renowned European architects such as Antoine Lasciac and Mario Rossi, in addition to European-educated Egyptian architectures, most notably Mustafa Fahmi. During the reign of Khedive Ismaâ il, Egypt witnessed a strong wave of European-influenced buildings, at the same time that the Mamluk style was being revived. The revived style was used in many buildings, not only religious …

"Fayyumi Ware": Variations, Imitations, And Importation Of An Early Islamic Glazed Ceramic Type, Gregory Williams Feb 2012

"Fayyumi Ware": Variations, Imitations, And Importation Of An Early Islamic Glazed Ceramic Type, Gregory Williams

Theses and Dissertations

A number of recent publications have shown that a small amount of Egyptian glazed table wares were imported throughout Palestine from the early centuries of Islam onwards. One of the oft-forgotten and least classifiable types is the problematically titled ‘Fayyumi’ ware, so-called for its supposed provenance in the Fayyum. ‘Fayyumi’ pottery was actually manufactured in Fustat (Old Cairo) and a reexamination of its many variations shows it was both influenced by Chinese-inspired Iraqi white wares and Coptic pottery traditions already extant in Egypt, warranting changes to both its name and variety of definitions. One of the issues which has plagued …

The Development Of The Coptic Perceptions Of The Muslim Conquest Of Egypt, Walid Mohamed Asfour Feb 2012

The Development Of The Coptic Perceptions Of The Muslim Conquest Of Egypt, Walid Mohamed Asfour

It also compares it with the narratives in History of the Patriarchs of the Coptic Church of Alexandria which was collected in the 10th century. This comparison is aiming at recognizing the factors that could be responsible for the development of the Coptic perceptions on the Muslim conquest over three centuries. The study also examines if these sources are the production of a religious institute, such as the Coptic Church, …
