Students’ Views About Learning With Technologies: A Literature Review, Kathryn Moyle, Guus Wijingaards, Susanne Owen
Students’ Views About Learning With Technologies: A Literature Review, Kathryn Moyle, Guus Wijingaards, Susanne Owen
Professor Kathryn Moyle
There is a paucity of recent, formal education research that listens directly to students’ views of learning with technologies. Much of the research that has been conducted has tended to focus on evaluating students’ current experiences within a specific course, or concerned with tangible issues such as frequency of computer use, access to computers and the Internet, and evaluations of technical skill levels. Available research has tended to use quantitative or mixed method approaches, with data collected through surveys using convenience samples, Likert scales and free response questions. These methods are sometimes supplemented with interviews and observations. To establish an …

Solar-Powered Compaction Garbage Bins In Public Areas: A Preliminary Economic And Environmental Evaluation, Poppy Coleman, Long Nghiem
Long D Nghiem
An excel-based model was developed to evaluate economic and environmental benefits of the solar-powered compaction garbage bins in public areas in Australia. Input data were collected from Brisbane and Wollongong City councils, and Sydney Olympic Park. The results demonstrate that solar-powered compaction garbage bins would provide environmental benefits in all scenarios. However, results of the economic analysis of the three studied areas varied significantly. The unique situation of Sydney Olympic Park made implementation in that facility particularly appealing. A lower monthly rental cost is needed for the implementation of this novel waste management practice.

The performance of a decentralised sewage treatment plant located at a rest area servicing a major freeway was investigated. Long term monitoring and rigorous analyses undertaken in this study revealed several unique and challenging issues associated with such scarcely studied systems. Data collected over a six month period showed that the raw wastewater strength was well above typical household wastewater characteristics, with the average BOD5, COD, TOC, TN and TP values of 880, 4900, 350, 238 and 8 mg/L, respectively. The system performance was considerably lower than that expected of a typical wastewater treatment unit. Several shortcomings in …
Electronic Health Record System Evaluation Based On Patient Safety, Yung-Yu Su, Khin Than Win, John A. Fulcher
Electronic Health Record System Evaluation Based On Patient Safety, Yung-Yu Su, Khin Than Win, John A. Fulcher
Dr Khin Win
After describing the general characteristics of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), we consider patient safety. We then proceed to discuss IS evaluation in general terms, followed by HIS system evaluation in particular. The D&M IS Success model, Technology Acceptance model and Task-Technology Fit model are considered as potential candidates for EHR System evaluation. Based upon a critical review of the available literature, we draw some conclusions about the appropriateness of current HIS/EHR evaluation approaches. Finally, we suggest that by incorporating patient safety attributes in any EHR System evaluation framework, then this could lead to improved accuracy, and in turn improved patient …
Evaluation Of Human Gait Through Observing Body Movements, Amir S. Hesami, Fazel Naghdy, David A. Stirling, Harold C. Hill
Evaluation Of Human Gait Through Observing Body Movements, Amir S. Hesami, Fazel Naghdy, David A. Stirling, Harold C. Hill
Dr David Stirling
A new modelling and classification approach for human gait evaluation is proposed. The body movements are obtained using a sensor suit recording inertial signals that are subsequently modelled on a humanoid frame with 23 degrees of freedom (DOF). Measured signals include position, velocity, acceleration, orientation, angular velocity and angular acceleration. Using the features extracted from the sensory signals, a system with induced symbolic classification models, such as decision trees or rule sets, based on a range of several concurrent features has been used to classify deviations from normal gait. It is anticipated that this approach will enable the evaluation of …

Performance Evaluation Of Ethanol Production Through Continuous Fermentation, Harvinder S. Sidhu, John M. Kavanagh, Simon D. Watt, Mark I. Nelson
Associate Professor Mark Nelson
We investigate the production of ethanol through continuous fermentation using Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a single reactor and cascades of two or three reactors. We use path following methods to investigate how the ethanol yield varies with the residence time in each reactor configuration of the cascade. Yields currently obtained in industry using yeast are approximately 0.48. We find reactor designs where the product yield approaches the stoichiometric limit of 0.51. We also estimate the financial benefits that can be achieved in typical US ethanol plants through increasing the product yield from 0.48 to 0.51.

Organizationally Mandated Diversity Training: Participants’ Perceptions At A Southeastern State University, Michelle Lynn Hurley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An amplified emphasis on global competency and a projected demographic shift toward an increasingly diverse population necessitates that businesses and organizations prepare adequately to remain competitive and effective. Training to enhance employees' multicultural competence is often used by organizations to address these impending changes; however, there is little research documenting the degree to which these trainings are effective. Using archival training evaluation data, the purpose of this study was to examine participant estimations of the effectiveness of one such training and also to determine if participant demographic variables including gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and employee classification (faculty or staff) …
Evaluation Of Transformer Magnetizing Core Loss, Ahmed Haidar, S Taib, I Daut, S Uthman
Evaluation Of Transformer Magnetizing Core Loss, Ahmed Haidar, S Taib, I Daut, S Uthman
Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Haidar
Loss in transformer core is the electrical power lost in terms of heat within the core of transformer, when core is subjected to AC magnetizing force. It is composed of several types of losses such a s Hysterics loss, eddy current loss within individual laminations and inter-laminar losses that may arise if laminations are not sufficiently insulated from each other. To assess the level of no load loss relative to the occurrence of an inaccurate manufacturing of transformer core, a quantitative measure is often considered. The objective of this research is to study the magnetic behaviour of transformer core and …

Parameters Evaluation Of Unified Power Quality Conditioner, Ahmed Haidar, C Benachaiba, F Ibrahim, K Hawari
Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Haidar
The term of “Power Quality” is used to describe the electromagnetic phenomenon in variations of voltage and current in the power system. Most power quality disturbances can come from the facility itself, such as large loads turning on simultaneously, improper wiring and grounding practices, the start-up of large motors and electronic equipments that can be both a source and victim of power quality phenomena or from externally generated, for example, lightning strokes on the power lines. Currently, there are so many industries using a high technology for the manufacturing and requiring a high quality of power supply. Therefore, the paper …

Transient Stability Evaluation Of Electrical Power System Using Generalized Regression Neural Networks, Ahmed Haidar, M Mustafa, Faisal Ibrahim, Ibrahim Ahmed
Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Haidar
Transient stability evaluation (TSE) is part of dynamic security assessment of power systems, which involves the evaluation of the system’s ability to remain in equilibrium under credible contingencies. Neural networks (NN) have been applied to the security assessment of power systems and have shown great potential for predicting the security of power systems. This paper proposes a generalized regression neural networks (GRNN) based classification for transient stability evaluation in power systems. In the proposed method, learning data sets have been generated using time domain simulation (TDS). TheGRNN input nodes representing the voltage magnitude for all buses, real and reactive powers …

An Examination Of The Efficiency Of Australian Crop Variety Evaluation Programmes, Brian R. Cullis, A B. Smith, C Hunt, Arthur R. Gilmour
Dr Arthur Gilmour
In this paper we present the analysis of yield data from a broad cross-section of crop variety evaluation programmes (CVEP) conducted in Australia. The main sources of variety by environment interaction are ` non-static ' interactions, namely those linked to seasonal influences. These contributed an average of 41.3% of the total variance. In contrast the static component accounts for only 5.3% of the total. We develop methods for determining the relative accuracy of CVEP based on selection of newly promoted entries. The accuracy of the current testing regimes for the Australian CVEP under study is determined. The accuracy of alternative …

A Corpus-Based Evaluation Of The Common European Framework Vocabulary For French Teaching And Learning, Francoise S. Kusseling
Theses and Dissertations
The CEFR French profiles have been widely used to teach and evaluate language instruction over the past decade. The profiles were specifications of vocabulary that have been largely untested from a corpus-based, empirical perspective. The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the CEFR profiles by comparing their content with two sizable contemporary corpora. This study quantified and described the vocabulary overlap and uniqueness across all three of these resources. Four areas of overlap and three areas of uniqueness were analyzed and identified. Slightly over 40% of the lexical content was common to the three resources studied. Additionally, 16.3% was …

A Comparison Of Analysis Methods For Late-Stage Variety Evaluation Trials, Sue Welham, Beverley Gogel, Alison Smith, Robin Thompson, Brian Cullis
Dr Alison Smith
The statistical analysis of late-stage variety evaluation trials using a mixed model is described, with one- or two-stage approaches to the analysis. Two sets of trials, from Australia and the UK, were used to provide realistic scenarios for a simulation study to evaluate the different methods of analysis. This study showed that a one-stage approach gave the most accurate predictions of variety performance overall or within each environment, across a range of models, as measured by mean squared error of prediction or realized genetic gain. A weighted two-stage approach performed adequately for variety predictions both overall and within environments, but …

This paper presents a comparative assessment of the current control methods (CCM) of switch-mode converters for photovoltaic (PV) applications. In this paper, average current control, current programmed control, hysteresis current control and nonlinear carrier control methods are addressed considering input fluctuations and load variations for PV systems. Dynamic responses of PV systems are investigated and harmonic analysis is performed. Performances of the above current controllers are examined through simulation and the results are presented. The results show that the selection of different current control techniques depends on the working conditions and the area of applications.
