Nutrition Knowledge Of Division I Tennis And Cross-Country Collegiate Athletes At Coastal Carolina University, Kate Dowling Dec 2011

Nutrition Knowledge Of Division I Tennis And Cross-Country Collegiate Athletes At Coastal Carolina University, Kate Dowling

Honors Theses

As competition increases, athletes continue to look for ways to gain a competitive edge. A review of the sources reveals that athletes lack nutritional knowledge; this could impair their performance. If athletes were more educated in nutritional knowledge, they would understand the importance of food in fueling one's body. This may dissuade athletes from using unnecessary supplements or ergogenic aids. The purpose of this study is to add to the existing research to determine if Division I collegiate athletes lack nutritional knowledge. To determine this, a dietary behavior and nutritional knowledge questionnaire was conducted with 28 Division I collegiate athletes …

An Analysis Of The Dietary Behaviors Of Coastal Carolina University's Ncaa Division I Student-Athletes, Alyssa Markowitz

Honors Theses

It is common knowledge that practice is the key to becoming better at something. This theory holds true with almost anything, from tying shoelaces to becoming a professional athlete. Elite athletes say that what has made them reach the top in their sports today is an incredible amount of dedication to repeatedly practicing their skills. As competition in sports becomes fiercer and starts at an increasingly younger age, practicing gains emphasis, but this is not the only aspect of achieving optimal performance that is extremely important. There is another factor that plays into how well one performs that is not …

Tattoos, Tickets And Other Tawdry Behavior: How Universities Use Federal Law To Hide Their Scandals, Meg Penrose Jul 2011

Tattoos, Tickets And Other Tawdry Behavior: How Universities Use Federal Law To Hide Their Scandals, Meg Penrose

Meg Penrose

Please find attached a copy of my recently completed article entitled Tattoos, Tickets and Other Tawdry Behavior: How Universities Use Federal Law to Hide Their Scandals. The article challenges the manner in which schools and their athletic departments invert a federal student privacy law, FERPA, to protect unseemly behavior and athletic scandals. Four case studies are presented: the University of Maryland and one athlete's accumulation of over $8,200 in parking fines; North Carolina University's athletic department scandal involving parking tickets and improper benefits (for which, just yesterday, the head football coach was fired and the Athletic Director resigned); Florida State …

Gardner-Webb, Campbell and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville will join the league beginning with the 2011-12 season. The addition of the three programs, in conjunction with UNC Greensboro’s discontinuation of its program following this past season, will bring the Southern Conference’s wrestling membership to eight schools. The move will provide the Runnin’ Bulldogs with a chance to compete for a true conference crown for the first time in the program’s 22 years.

Title Ix Compliance: A Comparison Of Coastal Carolina University To Other Regional Universities, Bailey Devon Howard May 2011

Title Ix Compliance: A Comparison Of Coastal Carolina University To Other Regional Universities, Bailey Devon Howard

Honors Theses

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and its subsequent interpretations have created legal ground for gender equity in collegiate athletics departments. After 38 years of its existence, however, there are still fewer opportunities for women to be involved in athletics at the collegiate level at NCAA universities. While there are some general characteristics that appear to predispose universities to have lower compliance levels, little research has been done on institution-specific compliance. This study seeks to illustrate Title IX compliance levels of the Big South Conference and South Carolina Division I universities, using Coastal Carolina University as the focal …

The Effectiveness Of Random Drug Testing Of School Athletes, Kelly Cann May 2011

The Effectiveness Of Random Drug Testing Of School Athletes, Kelly Cann

Honors Theses

Proponents of drug testing would most likely argue that random drug testing could have saved the lives of Len Bias and Taylor Hooton. Those against random drug testing might respond that this testing could be an avenue used to save lives, but before that can happen, a lot more work would need to be done to change the way the current system operates (or fails to operate) in order to make drug testing fair, effective and efficient.

Bridging The Gap: The Perceptions Of Athletic Directors And Coaches Regarding Nonrevenue Program Discontinuation Decisions, Erianne A. Weight, Coyte G. Cooper Jan 2011

Bridging The Gap: The Perceptions Of Athletic Directors And Coaches Regarding Nonrevenue Program Discontinuation Decisions, Erianne A. Weight, Coyte G. Cooper

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of athletic directors and coaches regarding wrestling program discontinuation decisions. In the past few decades, an alarming number of NCAA men’s wrestling programs have been eliminated throughout the United States (Student-athlete, 2006). Historically, the educational value offered through intercollegiate athletics was enough to justify financial funding of these programs; however, the marked trend toward the discontinuation of sports that are nonrevenue in nature support the notion that this justification may no longer be sufficient in today’s big-time intercollegiate athletic environment. In order to ensure the sustainability of programs that do …

The Feminist Case For The Ncaa's Recognition Of Competitive Cheer As An Emerging Sport For Women, Erin E. Buzuvis Jan 2011

The Feminist Case For The Ncaa's Recognition Of Competitive Cheer As An Emerging Sport For Women, Erin E. Buzuvis

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines whether a university can count opportunities in competitive cheer to demonstrate compliance with Title IX. A federal court in Connecticut recently considered this question for the first time. Although it held that the sport as it currently exists is not sufficiently similar to other varsity sports to qualify for Title IX compliance, the decision has mobilized two separate governing bodies to propose more organized and competitive versions of competitive cheer as possible NCAA emerging sports. This Article argues that these proposals would satisfy regulators and the courts. It then discusses how competitive cheer has potential to improve …

Fandom, Media Consumption, And College Sports Knowledge: A Survey Of College Undergraduates, Theodore Charles Greener Jan 2011

Fandom, Media Consumption, And College Sports Knowledge: A Survey Of College Undergraduates, Theodore Charles Greener

LSU Master's Theses

Sports fandom research often states sports fans know and understand facts surrounding various sports, teams, leagues, and players. College sports literature argues that media involvement increases popularity and revenues, and as a result, competition, controversy, and complexity. The Elaboration Likelihood Model posits that when involvement in a subject is high, so too is motivation and ability to comprehend, and as a result, cognition increases. Given this, results show that sports fandom acts similarly to issue involvement, leading to increased sports-media consumption. Together, both fandom and consumption lead to increased knowledge of facts surrounding college sports. Results imply that general interest …

Queering The Ncaa : How Athletic Administrators At National Collegiate Athletic Association Institutions Include Transgender Athletes, Lisa Margaret Brookens Jan 2011

Queering The Ncaa : How Athletic Administrators At National Collegiate Athletic Association Institutions Include Transgender Athletes, Lisa Margaret Brookens

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This thesis examines how Athletic Administrators (AA) at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institutions include transgender identities in their policies and practices. The main hypothesis presumes that people in positions of power within the NCAA membership have less inclusive opinions regarding transgender student-athletes (TSA). A mixed methods design was used, and an anonymous web-based survey tool was employed to address AA perceptions. Inferential statistics along with queer-feminist theory were utilized to document and deconstruct dominant themes generated during data collection. The participant pool included 511 AA's recruited by use of an exhaustive email list of the two top AA's at …
