Annual Reports - Education
From the earliest days of my career in orthopaedic surgery and chemical engineering, I have been fascinated with the prospect of regrowing bone and connective tissue to help patients regain mobility. It is now my privilege to be leading teams of scientists not only in my own lab but throughout the UConn Health Center who are pursuing promising research in this area. This includes Dr. David Rowe who has devoted most of his career to the study of osteogenesis imperfecta and is now pioneering new approaches for bone and tissue regeneration through the use of adult and embryonic stem cells. …

'This Open Sore Of The World:' The Legacy Of Dr. David Livingstone, The First Physician Missionary: Hero And Adventurer, Audrey Provenzano
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
At the end of the nineteenth century, Dr. David Livingstone became extraordinarily famous throughout Europe as the first physician-missionary. Livingstone embodied certain characteristics, adventurism and heroism, that Europeans found desirable and commendable. Livingstone issued a call for young men, particularly physicians, to follow him to Africa and continue his work. Using personal letters, journals, and other accounts of the physicians who followed Livingstone to Africa, specifically the region of Buganda, this paper explores how these themes of heroism and adventurism can be traced through the lives of the physicians who responded to Livingstones call. This paper traces these common themes …

Toward Innovative, Liveable, And Prosperous Asian Megacities Gawad Kalinga: Innovation In The City (And Beyond), Raymund B. Habaradas, Martin Lorenzo Aquino
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
Gawad Kalinga (GK) is an innovative approach that could be the key to solving poverty and homelessness in the Philippines. It is potentially an effective, sustainable, and replicable model that could address the problem of urban housing in the developing world. Its most important innovation is a shift in paradigm of what community development ought to be. Instead of looking at members of the poor communities as passive actors (i.e. as mere recipients of donations or as beneficiaries of support programs), GK considers them as active participants in the development process. Through the help of the caretaker team and the …

Forging A Link: Diaspora Developmental Activities For The Homeland, The Case Of Eko Club International, Hakeem Ibikunle Tijani
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This paper focuses on relatively unknown Diaspora group (Eko Club International-ECI)) analyzing its activities both in the Diaspora and the homeland. My attempt is to present a tentative survey of the activities of the association within the last seven years. Despite being recent, the ECI has made remarkable impacts through social and developmental projects) members) monthly financial contributions) and networking with government in the homeland. Unlike exiting studies about Diaspora associations) this paper is not about remittances by Lagosians in the Diaspora. Rather) it is about their efforts at collective social and developmental projects for the homeland.

A Comparative Analysis Of The Attitudes Towards People Living With Hiv/Aids Between Haiti And The Dominican Republic, Georges Perrin
A Comparative Analysis Of The Attitudes Towards People Living With Hiv/Aids Between Haiti And The Dominican Republic, Georges Perrin
Public Health Theses
BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigmatizing attitudes are persistent concerns in developing countries and have been shown to fuel the spread of the epidemics. The purpose of this study is to provide a comparative analysis between Haiti and the Dominican Republic in regards to the population’s attitude towards People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).
METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the Demographic Health Surveys involving 15,715 Haitians and 55,170 Dominicans from 2005 to 2007 were used. A score of attitudes was established from six items such as the willingness to care for infected relatives, the willingness to buy vegetables from an HIV infected vendor, the perception …

Global, Rural, & Cultural Health Book Series
The challenges faced by local, national, and global communities in an ever-changing world have continued to grow as we complete the first decade of the 21st century. The doctoral students writing this book undertook the effort with advocacy for disenfranchised populations in mind. This compilation illuminates the challenges and gaps in access to health care confronted by a wide range of people, from overweight children, lesbians, and Native Americans to individuals in rural communities in Papua New Guinea. As the reader can readily see, we are a group of students with wide-ranging experiences and interests.
