Set In Concrete? Crafting Innovation, Ruth Morrow, Trish Belford
Set In Concrete? Crafting Innovation, Ruth Morrow, Trish Belford
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper draws on the experience of practice-led research based in academia, which investigates the possibility of making hard surfaces soft. So far the project, in its fifth year of development, has led to three patents being filed on technology allowing manufacturers to embed textile technologies onto the surface of precast concrete surfaces resulting in hybrid but integral finishes. The work was initially understood as decorative but as the project has moved into testing and analysis phases a better understanding of the resultant altered characteristics of precast concrete surfaces has emerged – ie the resultant hybrid concrete surfaces overcome some …
An Indecent Obsession, Aaron Mcintosh
An Indecent Obsession, Aaron Mcintosh
Theses and Dissertations
The title of my thesis is appropriately borrowed from a romance novel title, as my work proposes to mine the content, design and culture of romance novels and other erotic texts in order to excavate my own queer romance narrative. The body of work includes large-scale drawings of “stand-in boyfriends” stolen from romance novel covers, pieced fabric text works based on the titles of erotic texts, and a couch covered in erotic reading material. Drawing attention to the ubiquity of heterosexualized images and texts by deconstructing them, my work critically questions larger social constructions of normality and deviance, pleasure and …
Women And Architecture: Re-Making Shelter Through Woven Tectonics, Kirsten Lee Dahlquist
Women And Architecture: Re-Making Shelter Through Woven Tectonics, Kirsten Lee Dahlquist
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Weaving and architecture, conceived simultaneously with cave paintings, are two ancient forms of craft used to enclose space and provide shelter harmoniously with nature. In its basic composition, a useable textile is the interlacing of two members, warp and weft, at right angles to create structure and surface respectively. Textile artist Anni Albers of the Bauhaus attributes the organization of weaving to the skills of an ancient goddess. Her understanding of prehistoric cultures further links women closer to the overall creation of structure, though perceived as a masculine endeavor. Consequently, early advancements in architecture, the structural organization of shelter, are …

Chintz Appliqué Albums: Memory And Meaning In Nineteenth Century Quilts Of The Delaware River Valley, Carolyn K. Ducey
Chintz Appliqué Albums: Memory And Meaning In Nineteenth Century Quilts Of The Delaware River Valley, Carolyn K. Ducey
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study examined two sub-sets of a unique style of chintz appliqué album quilt that developed in the 1840s in Delaware River Valley, specifically Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Trenton, New Jersey. The two groups provide examples of two distinct roles that the album quilts played in the lives of their makers: one acting as a literal record of familial ties, serving to preserve memory and reinforce family structure and the other representing the work of the members of the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia, providing a vehicle to recognize and appreciate dedicated service and playing a role in encouraging interest and …
