Does Presentation Make A Difference To Risk Perception: Testing Different Formats For Communication Of Cancer Risks, Sandra C. Jones
Does Presentation Make A Difference To Risk Perception: Testing Different Formats For Communication Of Cancer Risks, Sandra C. Jones
Sandra Jones
Evidence suggests that the presentation format of risk information can affect people’s perceptions of risk and influence health-related decisions. In these studies we investigated the impact of four different risk presentation formats: standard presentation, risk ladder, different base rates and visual representations on women’s perceptions of developing breast cancer of lymphoma. We found that the different presentations had virtually no impact on the participant’s risk estimates. Only in the second study relating to risk perceptions for lymphoma was there a significant difference between conditions for estimated 10-year-risk, with those in the ladder present condition reporting a lower estimated risk. The …
Vocabulary And Reading Growth In Children With Intellectual Disabilites: The Influences Of Risks, Adaptive Behavior, And A Reading Intervention, Dana Donohue
Psychology Dissertations
Risk factors tend to be negatively associated with developmental outcomes such as academic achievement and language skills. Promotive factors, on the other hand, may foster resilience in at-risk children. Some children, such as children with intellectual disabilities, experience relatively more risks than other children do. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of risks, adaptive behavior, and an intervention on the language and reading growth of children with intellectual abilities over the course of a yearlong reading intervention in which they were participants. The results suggested that, on average, risks were negatively associated and adaptive behaviors were …
Effects Of Official Sports Sponsorship On Firm Market Liquidity And Risk, Robert Dale Evans Jr.
Effects Of Official Sports Sponsorship On Firm Market Liquidity And Risk, Robert Dale Evans Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although there has been an increased interest in the connection between marketing expenditures and its contribution to strengthening firm financial metrics, there are few studies examining the changes to those firm financial metrics following firm adoption of a specific marketing strategy, in this case, firm adoption of an official sports sponsorship. Investments in official sports sponsorships are decidedly strategic activities that require the utilization of firm financial and human resources in an environment that is external to the firm.As explained by Srivastava, Shervani, and Fahey (1998), market-based assets arise from the commingling of firm resources with entities external to the …

Terrorism In Australia: A Psychometric Study Into The Western Australian Public Perception Of Terrorism, Richard Sargent, David J. Brooks
Terrorism In Australia: A Psychometric Study Into The Western Australian Public Perception Of Terrorism, Richard Sargent, David J. Brooks
Australian Security and Intelligence Conference
Terrorism is not a new concept, as historically terrorist organisations have used the threat of violence or actual violence to generate fear in individuals, organisations and governments alike. Fear is a weapon and is used to gain political, ideological or religious objectives. Past terrorist attacks have raised concerns around the world, as governments ensured that their anti-terrorism security strategies are adequate. Domestically, Australia upgraded its capacity to respond to terrorism events through security enhancements across many areas and with new initiatives such as the 2002 public counter terrorism campaign. Nevertheless, there has been restricted research into how terrorist events have …

Success Of Agile Environment In Complex Projects, Abbass Ghanbary, Julian Day
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
This paper discusses the impact of agile methodology in complex and modular interrelated projects based on the authors’ practical experience and observations. With the advancement of Web technologies and complex computer systems, business applications are able to transcend boundaries in order to fully meet business requirements and comply with the legislation, policies and procedures. The success of software development as well as software deployment of these complex applications is dependent upon the employed methodology and project management. This is so because employed methodology plays an important position in capturing and modeling of business requirements and project management helps to ensure …

What Is The Future Of The Cuban Oil Industry?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
Spanish company Repsol YPF SA has leased several offshore blocks from the Cuban government and is expected to begin drilling for oil and gas next year. Cuba currently imports the majority of its energy from Venezuela but experts suggest that untapped reserves on the country's northern coast may yield enough oil to wean Cuba off dependence on Venezuela. What issues does the Cuban government face in its bid to develop its oil industry? What are the implications for the Cuban economy? How will the prospect of drilling 50 miles from the Florida Keys affect Cuba's relationship with the United States?

Internationally, Public and Private Partnerships (PPPs) are being used across a wide variety of economic and social infrastructure projects in more than 85 countries. PPPs are a procurement methodology that brings a rigorous risk-weighted approach to major projects using a competitive bid process and private sector expertise and innovation. PPPs are achieving a number of significant improvements in major project procurement and improved public service delivery. This paper considers the prospects of PPPs from the perspective of government clients and their promoters of PPPs and whether current volatility and uncertainty in the capital markets in Australia will affect the feasibility of …
Lessons In Price Stability From The U.S. Real Estate Market Collapse, Andrea J. Boyack
Lessons In Price Stability From The U.S. Real Estate Market Collapse, Andrea J. Boyack
Andrea J Boyack
The U.S. residential housing market collapse illustrates the consequences of ignoring risk while funding mortgage borrowing. Collateral over-valuation was a foundational piece of the crisis. Over the past few decades, secondary markets, securitization, policy and psychology increased the flow of funds into real estate. At the same time, financial market segmentation divorced risk from reward. Increased mortgage capital availability, unmitigated by proper risk allocation, led to real estate price inflation. Social trends and government policies exacerbated both the mortgage capital over-supply and the risk-valuation disconnect.
The Dodd-Frank Act inadequately addresses the underlying asset valuation problem. Federal regulation may support market …
Travel, Migration And Hiv:Comparing Risk Behaviors Betweennative And Migrant Jamaican Persons Infected With Hiv, Yoran T. Grant
Travel, Migration And Hiv:Comparing Risk Behaviors Betweennative And Migrant Jamaican Persons Infected With Hiv, Yoran T. Grant
Open Access Dissertations
Migration and travel have been significant factors in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic since its emergence in 1981. Understanding the current effects of migration and travel on HIV/AIDS transmission and survival is essential to intervention efforts, especially for immigrants. Previous research highlights differences between immigrants and native ethnic minorities, but few studies compare immigrant groups to their peers in the country of origin. The overall objective of this study was to explore the relationship between migration, travel and risk behavior among Jamaicans infected with HIV. This dissertation study analyzed HIV/AIDS registry data from the New York City Department of …

Objectives Examine the contribution of sleep problems and indicators of inadequate sleep to psychopathology among children after accounting for shared risk and comorbid psychopathology. Methods Secondary analyses of cross-sectional data on 4- to 11-year-old (N = 1,550) children without chronic illness or developmental delay or disability. Parents provided information about sleep problems, indicators of inadequate sleep, symptoms of psychopathology, and risk factors for psychopathology. Teachers provided information about indicators of inadequate sleep and symptoms of psychopathology. Results Adjusting for risk factors and comorbid psychopathology, sleeping more than other children was related to parent-rated aggression. Nightmares and trouble sleeping were related …
Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Academic Achievement Among Ghanaian Youth, Ziblim Abukari
Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Academic Achievement Among Ghanaian Youth, Ziblim Abukari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Young people in Ghana who grow up in poverty and to families with little or no education endure limited early learning opportunities, underfunded educational systems, and more health and mental health problems compared to their peers from more privileged backgrounds. A significant body of literature addressing the relationship among risk, protection, resilience and academic achievement is based on youth populations in North America and Western Europe. Relatively little is known about the applicability of ecological and risk and resilience frameworks in non-Western countries. Consequently, educational outcomes of young people in Ghana are often characterized by similarities in low achievement, lack …

Health Insurance Coverage And Outcome Following Acute Myocardial Infarction. A Community-Wide Perspective, Silvia Kreindel, Ronald Rosetti, Robert Goldberg, Judith Savageau, Jorge Yarzebski, Joel Gore, Arthur Russo, Carol Bigelow
Jorge L. Yarzebski
BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested that type of medical insurance coverage is associated with hospital utilization rates and receipt of selected diagnostic or treatment approaches. To our knowledge no studies, however, have examined the relation between medical insurance coverage and short-term outcomes following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) from a multihospital, community-wide perspective. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between medical insurance coverage and in-hospital case-fatality rates as well as length of hospital stay following AMI. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 3735 residents of the Worcester, Mass, metropolitan area hospitalized with validated AMI during 1986, 1988, 1990, 1991, and 1993 at …
Clopidogrel Hypersensitivity: Clinical Challenges And Options For Management., Kimberly L Campbell, John R Cohn, Michael P Savage
Clopidogrel Hypersensitivity: Clinical Challenges And Options For Management., Kimberly L Campbell, John R Cohn, Michael P Savage
Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers
Over 90 million patients have been prescribed clopidogrel since its US FDA approval in 1997. Clopidogrel hypersensitivity affects up to 6% of patients, most commonly in the form of a pruritic rash. Symptoms are severe enough to result in drug discontinuation in 1.5% of patients. Premature discontinuation of clopidogrel is problematic following percutaneous coronary intervention because of the risk of stent thrombosis leading to myocardial infarction and death. Accordingly, the management of patients with clopidogrel hypersensitivity is of significant clinical importance. Conventional clopidogrel desensitization protocols, while successful in most patients, employ a washout period off medication to enable accurate detection …

The WTO system requires that trade restrictions meant to protect health and safety be based on a risk assessment supported by “sufficient scientific evidence.” Scholars and international standards organizations have pointed out, however, that science is incapable of providing answers to questions of health and safety without incorporating the risk assessors’ value judgments and assumptions. Before GMO-importing countries conduct risk assessments, GMO-producing and exporting countries have already conducted their own risk assessments, which led to their decision to produce and market the products in the first place. Both the exporting and importing countries’ risk assessments employ science informed by the …
The Cost Of Time: Haphazard Discounting And The Undervaluation Of Regulatory Benefits, Arden Rowell
The Cost Of Time: Haphazard Discounting And The Undervaluation Of Regulatory Benefits, Arden Rowell
Notre Dame Law Review
When performing cost-benefit analyses, regulators typically use willingness-to-pay studies to determine how much to spend to avert risks. Because money has a time-value, when a risk is valued is inextricable from how much it is valued. Unfortunately, the studies on which regulators rely are insensitive to this fact: they elicit people's willingness to pay for risk reductions without identifying the time at which the risk reduction will occur. Relying on these time-indeterminate studies has led to a systematic skew in regulatory cost-benefit analysis, toward the undervaluation of risks to human lives. Insofar as cost-benefit analyses inform regulation, this suggests that …
Should ‘Risk Syndrome Of Psychosis’ Be Included In Dsm V As A Diagnosis? A Road Towards Preventive Psychiatry”, Amresh Srivastava
Should ‘Risk Syndrome Of Psychosis’ Be Included In Dsm V As A Diagnosis? A Road Towards Preventive Psychiatry”, Amresh Srivastava
Amresh Srivastava
Psychiatric diagnosis has acquired a position of a quasi-legal document for mental health services and agencies working with mental health. Its utility has gone far beyond ‘clinical diagnosis for treatment’.
The concept of risk syndrome for schizophrenia has been thoroughly researched in last ten years or so. Significant advancement has been made in phenomenology, diagnostic criteria, classification, & neurobiology. The research of prodromal or at-risk or Ultra high-risk psychosis has significantly contributed to the body of knowledge of aetio-pathogenesis of schizophrenia.
The science of risk syndrome has apparently matured and its proponents are ready for its inclusion in DSM V …
Insurance In Sociolegal Research, Tom Baker
Insurance In Sociolegal Research, Tom Baker
All Faculty Scholarship
Insurance has a long history in sociolegal research, most prominently as a window on accident compensation and related tort law in action. Recent work has extended that research, with the result that tort law in action may be the best mapped of any legal field outside criminal law. Sociological research has begun to explore insurance as a form of governance, with effects in many legal fields and across the economy. This essay reviews developments in both bodies of work. Part one examines the relationship between liability insurance and tort law in action using the metaphors of window and frame. Part …

The Comparison Of Five Different Cattle Feeding Enterprises: A Stochastic Simulation On Expected Returns And The Effects Of Lrp Insurance, Caleb H. Bott
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This was a study on the Utah cattle industry which compared five different feeding enterprises. These feeding enterprises included feeding cull cows, finishing beef yearling steers, finishing Holstein yearling steers, backgrounding beef steer calves, and backgrounding Holstein steer calves. The main purpose of this study was to determine which feeding enterprise was the most profitable for Utah cattle producers.
Another objective of the study was to determine if LRP insurance lowered the volatility in the returns to these feeding enterprises. In order to answer these two questions of interest, a historical analysis of Utah cattle and feed prices was conducted …

The Effect Of Power On Exploratory Behavior, William Clay
The Effect Of Power On Exploratory Behavior, William Clay
Theses and Dissertations
The relations between power, exploratory behavior, and willingness to take risks were investigated. It was hypothesized that high power would be associated with increases in exploratory behavior, and that this relationship would be mediated by participants’ willingness to take risks. In Study One, one-hundred forty-one undergraduates (66% female) completed questionnaires to assess trait power and willingness to take risk, as well as a computer-based research paradigm, BeanFest, to assess exploration. Willingness to take risks correlated positively with exploration. However, the predicted relations involving power were not observed. In Study Two, power was experimentally manipulated. One-hundred thirty-three undergraduates (61% female) were …

The culture of success is pervasive in our society. It is unacceptable to get anything other than an “A”. “Win at all costs.” “No room for error.” At the same time, we know that great inventions always come after a long string of failures. In the corporate world, a few very successful companies and entrepreneurs have learned that calculated risk and the freedom to fail are the keys to innovation and progress. This webcast will examine how creating a risk-tolerant culture can aid in keeping academic libraries both vibrant and relevant in the current economy.

President Felipe Calderon, Center-Left Opposition Parties Differ On Energy Policy, State-Run Oil Company Pemex, Sourcemex
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
President Felipe Calderon's administration and the opposition parties have different ways of observing the 72nd anniversary of the expropriation of Mexico's oil industry, which many also mark as the birth of the state-run oil company PEMEX. In a ceremony marking the milestone decision by President Lazaro Cardenas (1934-1940), President Felipe Calderon and members of his administration used the occasion to announce the discovery of new reserves in the Gulf of Mexico and to present a cautiously optimistic view of the future. This is in contrast to the center-left opposition parties, which are pushing for a stronger PEMEX. They warned that …

Assessment Of Lameness Prevalence And Associated Risk Factors In Dairy Herds In England And Wales, Z. E. Barker, K. A. Leach, H. R. Whay, N. J. Bell, D. C. J. Main
Farm Animal Welfare Collection
Visits were made to 205 dairy farms in England and Wales between October 2006 and May 2007 by 1 or more of 4 researchers. At each visit, all milking cows were locomotion scored (lameness scored) using a 4-point scale (0 = sound locomotion, 1 = imperfect locomotion, 2 = lame, 3 = severely lame). The mean prevalence of lameness (scores 2 and 3) across the study farms was 36.8% (range = 0–79.2%). On each farm, the presence within the housing and grazing environments of commonly reported risks for increased lameness was recorded. Each farmer was interviewed to gauge the ability …
