Community Gardens And Urban Agriculture: Reclaiming The Market Place, Sara Prendergast

This paper will first explore the health of low-income communities living in inner cities. I will use obesity as one of the main indicators of poor health and explore the lack of access to holistic diets, high costs of fresh foods, and minimal education, with the aim of revealing how hunger is a consequence of a capitalist dominated market. Following, I will investigate how urban agriculture is a holistic solution in subduing the advent of food deserts and food insecurity by serving health, educational, and social needs in low-income communities, which further creates a more socially just market.

This dissertation addresses sustainability of rapid provision of safe water and sanitation required to meet the Millennium Development Goals. Review of health-related literature and global statistics demonstrates engineers' role in achieving the MDGs. This review is followed by analyses relating to social, environmental, and health aspects of meeting MDG targets.

Analysis of national indicators showed that inadequate investment, poor or nonexistent policies and governance are challenges to global sanitation coverage in addition to lack of financial resources and gender disparity. This article focuses on emerging international law addressing climate change. Providing a background on international negotiations, it considers the greenhouse gas emissions targets needed to avert catastrophic climate change. Assessing the funding debate, this article concludes that agreement in Copenhagen must result in a comprehensive instrument with which to maintain global emissions below 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide. Multilateral coordination can develop an effective framework for climate stabilization.
