On The Outside Looking In: A Qualitative Study Of Southern Appalachian First-Generation Students' Perceptions Of Higher Education., Michael Steven Briggs
On The Outside Looking In: A Qualitative Study Of Southern Appalachian First-Generation Students' Perceptions Of Higher Education., Michael Steven Briggs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to investigate Southern Appalachian, first-generation students' expectations of higher education. Research indicates that many first-generation students drop out of college after only 1 semester; however, little research exists concerning the expectations and experiences of first-generation college students from Southern Appalachia.
The study employs a qualitative methodology based in the tradition of grounded theory to highlight students' experiences while encouraging the emergence of data-driven theory based on what the researcher heard. Thus, the entire study is couched in the interpretivist philosophy of research.
Eleven full-time university students were interviewed for the study. They were asked to identify …

An Examination Of The Adjustment Of First Generation African American Male College Students, Adina Narcisse Green
An Examination Of The Adjustment Of First Generation African American Male College Students, Adina Narcisse Green
Dissertations
Little is known about the college adjustment of first generation African American male students. The purpose of this study was to examine the college adjustment of this subgroup of students and create a profile of African American male college students as it relates to adjustment. In addition, research has found that students who do not integrate well into the college environment, both academically and socially, have a higher chance of incompletion. With African American males exhibiting the lowest retention and graduation rates among their gender and racial counterparts, investigating their levels of adjustment might aid in explaining their high rates …
The Four-Year Experience Of First-Generation Students At A Small Independent University : Engagement, Student Learning, And Satisfaction., David M. Mahan
The Four-Year Experience Of First-Generation Students At A Small Independent University : Engagement, Student Learning, And Satisfaction., David M. Mahan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explored the four-year college experience of first-generation and continuing-generation students at a small private institution. Using Astin's I-E-O model (1970), the following variables in the student experience were considered: precollege student characteristics (input); engagement in academic experiences, cocurricular activities, campus relationships (environment); and satisfaction, learning (outcome). The sample consisted of seniors participating in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and/or a direct measure of general education learning, the ETS Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress. Results of the analysis of learning indicated no difference in first-generation and continuing-generation students' measures (n = 342). One exception was found …
The Impact Of Protective Behavioral Strategies On The Relationship Between The Negative Consequences Of Alcohol Use And Anxiety Sensitivity, Jeanne Louise Lambrecht
The Impact Of Protective Behavioral Strategies On The Relationship Between The Negative Consequences Of Alcohol Use And Anxiety Sensitivity, Jeanne Louise Lambrecht
Dissertations
Alcohol consumption among college students continues to be a concern on college campuses. It is estimated that a large majority (83%) of college students use alcohol (Johnston, O’Malley, Bachman, & Schulenberg, 2008). The negative consequences of alcohol consumption range broadly in both domain and degree of harm to the individual and society. Protective behavioral strategies (PBS) can be utilized to reduce the degree of negative consequences of alcohol consumption when people choose to drink. Many college students report that they drink to reduce anxiety they experience in social situations or to reduce the stress and anxiety they experience due to …
Perceptions Related To Dietary Supplements Among College Students, Bethany Hope Brown
Perceptions Related To Dietary Supplements Among College Students, Bethany Hope Brown
Masters Theses
Introduction: Prior research has shown that dietary supplement use is a common practice among college students. Most of these studies used surveys and questionnaires to provide an overview of supplement use in the U.S. However, in-depth information on college students’ perceptions and/or concerns related to dietary supplement use is lacking. The aim of this study was to capture a deeper understanding of how college students perceive dietary supplements.
Methods: A qualitative case study design was used, which allowed a greater understanding of the case through content analysis. The study used a secondary database, which consisted of web log (blog) posts …

Letting Students Take The Lead: Active Learning In The Library Classroom, Ann Marie Smeraldi
Letting Students Take The Lead: Active Learning In The Library Classroom, Ann Marie Smeraldi
Ann Marie Smeraldi
Each fall reluctant first year students are herded into the academic library for a one-shot, sixty minute library session. Desperate to keep students’ eyes from glossing over and fingers from texting, librarians have tried everything from treasure hunts and games to murder mysteries and raves. But what if you do not have the time, staff, budget, or energy to orchestrate an hour of edutainment for thousands of students? In this session you will discover how one librarian managed to engage her students and reduce her stress by surrendering control and allowing the students to take the lead in the classroom. …

Retention Of Most-At-Risk Entering Students At A Four Year College, Hari P. Koirala, Marsha J. Davis, Carmen R. Cid
NERA Conference Proceedings 2010
The literature on retention and graduation of college students suggests that institutions that serve higher proportions of at-risk students, such as low-income, first-generation, and minority students, have generally lower four-year and six-year graduation rates. Using both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, this study focused on the retention of students from first to second year and from second to third year at a four-year college. Consistent with the literature, it was found that a disproportionately higher percentage of the at-risk students are likely to leave college without graduating. This study adds to the literature by providing specific information about factors that …

Marketing Special Academic Events To College Professors And Students, Julie Johnson
Theses
The study examined the communication channels that professors, graduate students, and undergraduates use to learn and tell others about special academic events on college campuses, as well as individuals' motivations for attending academic events and mentioning them to others. Broad similarities emerged among the groups. Email announcement was the most common way to learn about academic events, and face-to-face communication was the most common means of telling others. Beyond the similarities, significant differences emerged. Overall, students showed more diversity in channels of communication for learning and sharing information about academic events, as well as in motivations for attending events and …

Bennett College for Women is a private, four year college serving approximately 725 African-American women in Greensboro, North Carolina. Because of its unique demographic as one of only two all-female, historically black colleges in the United States, Bennett College attracts women from across the country and the world with a profound diversity of talents and preparation for undergraduate study. The Thomas F. Holgate Library supports the research needs of the college through an active instructional services program at the undergraduate level. While the library has provided library orientation and traditional bibliographic instruction for decades, during the 2007/8 academic year, and …

Adaptation Of A Lay Health Advisor Model As A Recruitment And Retention Strategy In A Clinical Trial Of College Student Smokers, Shiloh Jordan Varvel, Nikole J. Cronk, Kari Jo Harris, Anne B. Scott
Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications
This study describes and provides results from a process evaluation of a lay health advisor (LHA) model to enhance participation in a clinical trial of the effectiveness of motivational interviewing on smoking cessation in college fraternity and sorority members. The implementation of the model had two phases: (a) the selection and training of LHAs as liaisons between research staff and participants and (b) LHAs’ roles in recruitment and retention. Perceptions of the LHA model were explored using survey questionnaires. Trial participants (N = 118) and LHAs (N = 8) were generally satisfied with the model and identified LHAs as helpful …

Heavier Drinking American College Students May Self-Select Into Study Abroad Programs: An Examination Of Sex And Ethnic Differences Within A High-Risk Group, Eric R. Pedersen, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Mary E. Larimer, Christine M. Lee
Heads Up!
As with other heavier drinking groups, heavier drinking American college students may self-select into study abroad programs with specific intentions to use alcohol in the foreign environment. This cross-sectional study used a sample of 2144 students (mean age = 20.00, SD = 1.47) to explore differences in alcohol use and related negative consequences among (1) students intending to study abroad while in college, (2) students not intending to study abroad, and (3) students reporting prior study abroad participation. Results revealed that participants with no intention to study abroad drank less and experienced fewer alcohol-related consequences than participants intending to study …

An Examination Of Prepartying And Drinking Game Playing During High School And Their Impact On Alcohol-Related Risk Upon Entrance Into College, Shannon R. Kenney, Justin F. Hummer, Joseph W. Labrie
Heads Up!
Prepartying and drinking game playing are associated with excessive alcohol consumption and alcohol-related negative consequences in college populations; however, research exploring the prevalence of these high risk drinking contexts among high school students, and how such engagement may impact both high school and subsequent college drinking risk, is lacking. The current study, which is the first study to assess prepartying during high school, examined how engaging in either prepartying or drinking game playing during high school was associated with risky high school drinking as well asalcohol use and consequences during the transitional first month of college. The study involved 477 …
Assessment Of The Relatedness Of Equivalent Stimuli Through A Semantic Differential, Renato Bortoloti, Julio C. De Rose
Assessment Of The Relatedness Of Equivalent Stimuli Through A Semantic Differential, Renato Bortoloti, Julio C. De Rose
The Psychological Record
If stimulus equivalence is a model of meaning, abstract stimuli should acquire the meaning of meaningful stimuli equivalent to them. In Experiment 1, college students matched faces expressing emotions to arbitrary pictures, forming three classes of equivalent stimuli, each comprising an emotional expression and three arbitrary pictures. Semantic differential judgments by students who formed equivalence classes were similar to evaluations of the faces, and this similarity increased when delayed matching was used in training. Experiment 2 found that pictures distant 1-node from the faces were judged as similar to them and pictures distant 3-nodes were not. Therefore, abstract stimuli acquired …

Gay Male Identity In The Context Of College: Implications For Development, Support, And Campus Climate, James M. Devita
Gay Male Identity In The Context Of College: Implications For Development, Support, And Campus Climate, James M. Devita
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation includes three articles that explore the relationship between gay identity and the college environment. The college environment has been shown to affect students’ attitudes, beliefs, and personal development in various ways, including aspects of individuals’ identity and attitudes towards social and political issues in society. D’Augelli’s (1994) lesbian-gay-bisexual (LGB) identity development framework provides both a priori knowledge of issues associated with gay identity and a lens through which findings are analyzed in each of the articles included in this dissertation. The first article examines the relationship between first-year college students’ personal characteristics and their attitudes towards same-sex relationships. …

Using The Personality Assessment Inventory To Diagnose And Discriminate Between Major Depressive Disorder And Generalized Anxiety Disorder In A University Counseling Center, William Edward Nichelson Iii
Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated the utility of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) for diagnosing and discriminating between Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) with university counseling center clients. Participants were 1541 male and female students who received services at a student counseling center at a large university. Participants were classified as MDD, GAD, or Other Diagnosis (OD) based on the diagnosis determined by the treating clinician, and PAI profiles were compared between the three groups.
The PAI Structural Summary-Revised contains Diagnostic Consider Clusters (DCC) that were designed to identify PAI scales/subscales that are typically elevated or suppressed when …

The Journal of Extension
The article examines the viability of podcast use to provide financial education for college students by Extension educators. A focus group study of college students was conducted by a team of Extension educators from the University of Minnesota Extension related to the potential use of podcasts. Eight focus groups were conducted at a variety of colleges throughout the upper Midwest. Researchers found podcasts are not a stand-alone educational approach, but potentially a tool in a blended learning approach. Implications for using podcast and other technologies in Extension education are discussed.
Identity Management Strategies Of Resident Assistants, Rachel Edwards
Identity Management Strategies Of Resident Assistants, Rachel Edwards
Masters Theses
The resident assistant (RA) position at higher education institutions is a position of great influence. RAs have the opportunity to impact many students’ lives through the various roles that they engage in as a RA. The most common roles that RAs are expected to perform include developing community, serving as a peer helper, being a friend to residents, and enforcing policy. The very nature of a multi-role position presents challenges for RAs in understanding how to effectively enact all of their roles.
This study aimed at developing an understanding of the ways in which RAs engage in identity management strategies …
