South Dakota Agricultural Land Market Trends: 1991-2010, Larry Janssen, Burton Pflueger, E. Opuko

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars

Agricultural land values and cash rental rates in South Dakota, by region and by state, are the primary topics of this report. Target audiences are farmers and ranchers, landowners, agricultural professionals (lenders, rural appraisers, professional farm managers), and policy makers interested in agricultural land market trends. Satisfaction Of Contract Poultry Producers In Virginia And West Virginia, Christina L. Richmond May 2010

Satisfaction Of Contract Poultry Producers In Virginia And West Virginia, Christina L. Richmond

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This study investigated the satisfaction of contract poultry producers in West Virginia and Virginia using a mailed questionnaire. Producers were asked to provide feedback on their company, income, debt load and grower relations. Producers indicated they were satisfied with their business decision to raise contract poultry. Level of satisfaction was significantly different for producers in the two states. Producers who raise pullets or broiler breeders exhibited greater satisfaction that broiler producers. The income level of producers has increased, however more producers have indicated they are losing money. Producers showed high levels of satisfaction with their service personnel who come directly …

The 2005/06 South Dakota Grain Marketing Patterns Study: A Grain Elevator Survey Report, Bashir Qasmi, Yonas Hamda, Scott Fausti

Economics Research Reports

U.S. agriculture is going through a transition and agricultural policies are being modified to make production of farm commodities more responsive to market forces. In this competitive environment, efforts on the part of commodity groups for market development are becoming increasingly important. However, in order to devise any market development plan for a commodity, the understanding of the present status of the marketing system is important. At a minimum, one needs to know the methods of buying and selling, types of buyers, shipment destinations, and transportation modes for the commodity. Corn, soybeans, wheat, and sunflower seeds are the most important …

Essays On Risk Management Applications To Appalachian Grass -Fed Beef, Maitreyi Mandal Jan 2010

Essays On Risk Management Applications To Appalachian Grass -Fed Beef, Maitreyi Mandal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The study area of this dissertation is the Appalachian state of West Virginia, where pasture-based livestock has traditionally dominated the state's agricultural production sector. Enhanced production risk has been identified as one of the key risk factors in grass fed beef production. This study aims to look into various risk management options that are available to grass-fed beef producers. One such management option is the various livestock insurance and rangeland, forage and grass land protection policies recently introduced and marketed by the Risk Management Agency (RMA) of USDA. The Livestock Risk Protection Plan (LRP) has been available to West Virginia …

Development Of Economic Analysis Models For Woody Biomass To Biofuels In Central Appalachia, Jinzhuo Wu Jan 2010

Development Of Economic Analysis Models For Woody Biomass To Biofuels In Central Appalachia, Jinzhuo Wu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Concerns about volatile crude oil prices, energy security, and environmental issues are driving the production and use of renewable energy in the United States. Woody biomass can be used as feedstock for solid or liquid fuels or electricity generation. An economic analysis model was developed to estimate the delivered cost of woody biomass using different woody biomass handling systems. The model was designed to minimize the total annual delivered cost of woody biomass and applied to the central Appalachian region. Six forest districts were used to represent the destination of woody biomass supply. When demand is 900 metric tons (990 …

Ecological And Economic Impacts Of Wildfires On An Appalachian Oak Forest In Southern West Virginia, Katharina U. Mueller Wood Jan 2010

Ecological And Economic Impacts Of Wildfires On An Appalachian Oak Forest In Southern West Virginia, Katharina U. Mueller Wood

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Oaks (Quercus spp.) are considered a fire adapted species and fire disturbances throughout the lifecycle have been proposed to be necessary for maintaining oak dominated stands. Wildfire has been blamed for significant losses in sawtimber volume. A total of 164 points were sampled in stands that had experienced between zero to six wildfires over 36 years in Cabwaylingo State Forest (CSF), West Virginia. The wildfires have affected different strata and species of forest vegetation in different ways. While total overstory density decreased from 242 to 38 TPA with increasing fire frequency, oak density was highest in areas of three fires. …
