The Effect Of Consumerism And Regulation On Household Solid Waste Management In The United States And Germany: A Comparative Study, Amir Vafa
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Private household recycling is a significant aspect of consumerism in economically developed countries and the inevitable question of household waste management has gained more importance among municipalities in recent years. The present study examined the effect of regulation on household solid waste management. Within a comparative, qualitative framework, the study explored and evaluated the pro-regulatory effects in Germany and the anti-regulatory policies in the United States by means of comparing two similar communities, Lincoln, Nebraska and Augsburg, Germany. By examining the present legislations, official documents, legal and operational procedures, and other relevant artifacts, laws, regulations and the degree of their …

Unity, Charity, And Fraternity: Father Michael Mcgivney And The Knights Of Columbus, Kathleen A. Bruno
Unity, Charity, And Fraternity: Father Michael Mcgivney And The Knights Of Columbus, Kathleen A. Bruno
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
My thesis discusses the reasons for the creation of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, in 1881. I discuss why Father Michael McGivney, a Catholic priest in New Haven, Connecticut, believed that the organization was necessary to prevent Catholic men from joining the "secret societies" of the nineteenth century. I also explain the present-day Knights of Columbus and how McGivney's vision is carried out today through the Order.

Joseph Priestley: Scientist, Philosopher, And Theologian: Book Review, Michael Austin
Joseph Priestley: Scientist, Philosopher, And Theologian: Book Review, Michael Austin
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
I n two hundred or so published works between 17 60 and his death in 1804, Joseph Priestley established himself as an important voice in more than a half a dozen important fields. He was a grammarian and pedagogue, philosopher and political theorist, historian, world famous scientist who played a major part in the discovery of oxygen, and important figure in the development of Unitarianism. Covering all of this in a single introductory volume is a big job, and Joseph Priestley: Scientist, Philosopher, and Theologian does it well, providing a much needed introduction to the thought of one of the …
Religiosity, Beliefs About Mental Illness, And Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Among Protestant Christians., Juan Michael Thompson
Religiosity, Beliefs About Mental Illness, And Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Among Protestant Christians., Juan Michael Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have long been interested in the relationship among the separate fields of psychology and religion. This dissertation seeks to explore the differences in the way protestant Christians with various religious orientations view mental illness and how these views relate to their attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. A total of 540 individuals from church congregations representing ten different denominations completed measures of religiosity, beliefs about mental illness, and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. Scores on these measures were analyzed to observe group differences between religious orientations and correlations among the orientations and dependent variables of belief about mental …

The Local Is Global: Broker For Human Rights “Florence Kitchelt, Connecticut Peace Activist And Feminist,” 1920-1961, Danelle L. Moon
Danelle L. Moon
In this paper, I will explore the role of local peace activist and feminist, Florence Ledyard Kitchelt (1874-1961) in supporting social justice, equality, and world peace. In 1924 Kitchelt accepted a paid position with the Connecticut League of Nation’s Association (CLNA), and for nearly twenty years she served as secretary and director of the organization. Working through the CLNA she canvassed the state promoting peace education and to building support for the League of Nations and the World Court. In 1925 she traveled to Geneva to study the League of Nations and attended the Assembly. Between the wars she worked …

And The Ban Plays On . . . For Now: Why Courts Must Consider Religion In Marriage Equality Cases, Matthew E. Feinberg
And The Ban Plays On . . . For Now: Why Courts Must Consider Religion In Marriage Equality Cases, Matthew E. Feinberg
Matthew E Feinberg
The gay marriage ban: it is one of the most controversial issues in politics, in society, in religion, and in law today. In each venue, anything goes, everyone has an opinion, and the result is rarely consistent. The decisions may be different, but the claimants’ arguments are usually the same – banning same-sex marriage denies same-sex couples equal protection under the law.
The pink elephant in the marriage equality courtroom is religion, yet it is extremely rare for same-sex marriage bans to receive First Amendment religious rights-based inquiry. In 2009, the Supreme Court of Iowa changed all that. In its …
Disenchantment: The Formation, Distortion, And Transformation Of Identity In Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, Lydia K. Christoph
Disenchantment: The Formation, Distortion, And Transformation Of Identity In Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, Lydia K. Christoph
Masters Theses
Charles Dickens' Great Expectations (1861) stands apart from his other works as a powerful expression of his later social and theological views. Rife with rich characterizations, fairy-tale elements, grotesque and bizarre plot twists, Victorian social issues, and a beautifully thoughtful and imaginative commentary on the universal human themes of loss, guilt, abuse, identity, money, social status, and love, this novel remains an outstanding example of truly great art, both popular and classic. This story of identity formation in a nineteenth-century English context demonstrates how Dickens' life and writings, influenced by spurious and inconsistent theological beliefs, express the idea that sin …

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral argument this fall in Salazar v. Buono, No. 08-472, a matter that involves a Latin cross located in the Mojave National Preserve located in Southeastern California and operated by the National Park Service. First placed there as a memorial to American’s who served in WWI, this Christian symbol is said to violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Before reaching the merits, however, the Court must first pass on the question of standing to sue. The plaintiff, Frank Buono, is a former employee of the National Park Service and objects to the …

Shaker Messages From Mary Magdalene And John Calvin: Haughty Spirits, Bearing For The Dead, And The Problem Of History, Jane F. Crosthwaite
Shaker Messages From Mary Magdalene And John Calvin: Haughty Spirits, Bearing For The Dead, And The Problem Of History, Jane F. Crosthwaite
American Communal Societies Quarterly
Among the pleasures and puzzles of the Era of Manifestations are the many messages that Shaker instruments received from personages long dead. The responsibility and perhaps temptation of the scholar is to decode these messages, to analyze the intention of the instrument, the value of the message, and the utility of the experience for the larger Shaker enterprise.
I have chosen two messages to examine; although they are rather dissimilar—one being a life story from Mary Magdalene and the other a confession from John Calvin—they do have several features in common. They exemplify the range of messages recorded by Shaker …
Hopedale, A Moderate Utopia: Distinguishing Practical Christianity From Radical Idealism, Noah Symynkywicz
Hopedale, A Moderate Utopia: Distinguishing Practical Christianity From Radical Idealism, Noah Symynkywicz
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Historians often define the utopian communities of the nineteenth century as those that tried to alienate themselves from their contemporaries in thought. However, a spectrum of these communities developed with a more ordinary worldview. Specifically, a community called Hopedale tried to balance elements of mainstream New England society with those of its “Christian socialist” leader, Adin Ballou. By looking at the community’s day-to-day life, this equilibrium becomes clear.
The Hidden Dimension Of Nineteenth-Century Immigration Law, Kerry Abrams
The Hidden Dimension Of Nineteenth-Century Immigration Law, Kerry Abrams
Vanderbilt Law Review
Most histories of immigration law are histories of restriction. This emphasis is hardly surprising: beginning in 1875, Congress passed increasingly draconian acts, mostly targeting Chinese immigrants, which ultimately led to the outright exclusion of nearly all Asian immigrants. Then, in the 1920s, Congress enacted quotas aimed at keeping the U.S. population primarily white, with an emphasis on immigrants from northern and western European stock. And throughout history in general, immigration law has focused not only on excluding but also on deporting those immigrants deemed undesirable.
In addition to focusing on exclusion, immigration law history has also been preoccupied with federal …
