Exception From Informed Consent Requirements For Human Subjects In Emergency Medicine Research, Laura J. Sanger
Exception From Informed Consent Requirements For Human Subjects In Emergency Medicine Research, Laura J. Sanger
Laura J Sanger
Research involving emergency care can present special issues with regards to obtaining informed consent. An emergency research subject may be considered a candidate for an emergency research under circumstances in which traditional informed consent can not be obtained before the therapeutic window for the research closes. In these cases there may be an exception for emergency research enrollment that waives traditional informed consent for participation in research. As informed consent forms a foundation for medical research studies, this waiver is predicated on very specific criteria. This paper explores the historical background for informed consent, the criteria for obtaining the waiver …

Static, Yet Fluctuating: The Evolution Of Batman And His Audiences, Perry Dupre Dantzler
Static, Yet Fluctuating: The Evolution Of Batman And His Audiences, Perry Dupre Dantzler
English Theses
The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any …

The Sound-Symbolic Expression Of Animacy In Amazonian Ecuador, Janis B. Nuckolls
The Sound-Symbolic Expression Of Animacy In Amazonian Ecuador, Janis B. Nuckolls
Faculty Publications
Several anthropologists of Amazonian societies in Ecuador have claimed that for Achuar [1] and Quichua speaking Runa [2,3,4] there is no fundamental distinction between humans on the one hand, and plants and animals on the other. A related observation is that Runa and Achuar people share an animistic cosmology whereby animals, plants, and even seemingly inert entities such as rocks and stones are believed to have a life force or essence with a subjectivity that can be expressed. This paper will focus on Quichua speaking Runa to seek linguistic evidence for animacy by examining the sound-symbolic properties of a class …

Toward A Rhetoric Of Scholar-Fandom, Tanya R. Cochran
Toward A Rhetoric Of Scholar-Fandom, Tanya R. Cochran
English Dissertations
Individuals who consider themselves both scholars and fans represent not only a subculture of fandom but also a subculture of academia. These liminal figures seem suspicious to many of their colleagues, yet they are particularly positioned not only to be conduits to engaged learning for students but also to transform the academy by chipping away at the stereotypes that support the symbolic walls of the Ivory Tower. Because they are growing in number and gaining influence in academia, the scholar-fans of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Buffy) and other texts by creator Joss Whedon are one focus of …
Exploring The Factory: Analyzing The Film Adaptations Of Roald Dahl's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Richard B. Davis
Exploring The Factory: Analyzing The Film Adaptations Of Roald Dahl's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Richard B. Davis
English Theses
Film adaptations are becoming more popular and past critics and scholars have discussed films based on dramas and novels. However, few have explored the children’s literature genre. In discussing such a topic, it takes more than just debating whether the novel or book is better. A discussion on what elements have been maintained, removed, or added in such an adaptation has to be made along with its success or failure. With this in mind, Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and its two film adaptations will be explored along with an analysis of film adaptation theory to …
Influence Of Technology On Adolescent Development And Spiritual Formation, Kevin Daniel Monahan
Influence Of Technology On Adolescent Development And Spiritual Formation, Kevin Daniel Monahan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Adolescence is the time when a person develops perceptions about religious thoughts and with proper guidance, can be a stronger follower of Christ. The purpose of this project is to analyze the effects of technology on young people and to show a direct correlation between the influence of technology and spiritual growth of adolescents. I will argue that both the positive and negative influences of technology have made our students more informative yet less personally intimate. This shift of personal interaction presents a challenge to the cognitive development and spiritual formation of all students.

An Experimental Comparison Of Middle School Students' Motivation And Preference Toward Text- And Graphic-Based Programming, Stephen E. Williams
An Experimental Comparison Of Middle School Students' Motivation And Preference Toward Text- And Graphic-Based Programming, Stephen E. Williams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to compare seventh-grade students' motivation and preference toward text-based programming using Visual Basic, and graphics-based programming using Robolab. Motivation was defined by the My Class Activities questionnaire using the dimensions of interest, challenge, choice, and enjoyment. Preference was determined through team and individual student choice. This study was conducted with 122 students from three 6-week technology education classes. This study examined two hypotheses. First, middles school students will be more motivated when using a graphics-based programming language than text-based as measured by the My Class Activities survey. The second hypothesis for this study …

Joss Whedon: Finding Religious Themes In A Science Fiction Universe, Amanda M. Baker
Senior Honors Theses
Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other science fiction television shows, is a devout atheist but still manages to weave religious themes throughout his work, including redemption, free will, and Christ figures. This paper will examine the different themes from Whedon’s shows and encourage the reader to look beyond the entertainment aspect and into the deeper moral meaning of the situations he creates.

Down The Rabbit Hole: The Madness Of State Film Incentives As As "Solution" To Runaway Production, Adrian H. Mcdonald
Adrian H. McDonald
This working paper is a "sequel" to my first law review article on runaway productions called "Through the Looking Glass": Runaway Productions and "Hollywood Economics," published in The University of Pennsylvania Journal of Labor and Employment Law in August 2007.
Since 2007, there has been a race to the bottom as virtually every state has enacted significant, if not detrimentally generous, tax incentives to lure film and television production. The efficacy of these incentives is evaluated at length, with particular attention paid to the origin and implementation of tax incentives in California, Massachusetts and Louisiana - states with colorful backgrounds …

In Dreams, Jesse Bickel
In Dreams, Jesse Bickel
Theses
Dreams are a nightly phenomenon that everyone experiences. They are full of vivid imagery, imagination, and emotion. Using dreams as a rich source of inspiration I created wooden objects and furniture for the bedroom, the place where dreams occur. Even though dreams vary from person to person, there are common themes that can be found regardless of culture or gender. I tried to combine those themes with unique and specific imagery from my own dreams. Capturing the intangible quality of dreams proved to be difficult. A dream is like a memory, at times clear and intense, or contrastingly brief and …

Could Fifty Million Record-Buyers Have Been Irrelevant? Understanding The Post-World War Ii Past Through Popular Music, Michael T. Bertrand
Could Fifty Million Record-Buyers Have Been Irrelevant? Understanding The Post-World War Ii Past Through Popular Music, Michael T. Bertrand
Popular Music in the Mercer Era, 1910-1970
Conventional historians often overlook the role of popular music in their interpretations of the past. They generally treat the subject as if it existed on the periphery of everyday life. Such an approach removes popular music from its social, cultural, and historical environment and places it within a vacuum where it predictably retains little meaning except as trivia. Without discounting the commercial nature of popular culture, this paper will argue that modern-day consumers utilize the tools that are available to them, including music, to express themselves in ways that often are denied in other social spheres. Consequently, historians have the …
