The Influence Of International Service-Learning On Cultural Competence In Baccalaureate Nursing Graduates And Their Subsequent Nursing Practice, Roxanne Amerson

All Dissertations

A series of research studies was completed over 3 years to evaluate baccalaureate nursing students' transcultural self-efficacy following the completion of service-learning projects. A quantitative pilot study was completed in 2007 with a convenience sample of students (n=60) enrolled in a community health nursing course. Several clinical groups worked with local communities and one clinical group took part in a one-week program in Guatemala. The Transcultural Self-Efficacy Tool (TSET) was administered at the beginning and completion of the semester. A paired-samples t test demonstrated a significant increase for pre-test to post-test total and subscale scores.

A Model For Sustainable Humanitarian Engineering Projects, Evan A. Thomas, Bernard Amadei, Robyn Sandekian

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The engineering profession should embrace a new mission statement?to contribute to the building of a more sustainable, stable, and equitable world. Recently, engineering students and professionals in the United States have shown strong interest in directly addressing the needs of developing communities worldwide. That interest has taken the form of short-and medium-term international trips through Engineers Without Borders?USA and similar organizations. There are also several instances where this kind of outreach work has been integrated into engineering education at various US institutions such as the University of Colorado at Boulder. This paper addresses the challenges and opportunities associated with balancing …

"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner Jul 2009

"Aquí No Pasó Nada": Terror, Remembrance And Healing In A Guatemalan "Green Zone", William G. Wagner

Anthropology ETDs

This research focuses on the experiences of survivors of political violence and their healers in Momostenango, Totonicapán. The majority population of Momostenango is Kiche' Maya. During Guatemala's civil war (1960-1996), the state used terror to silence popular resistance and to neutralize the threat of insurgent guerilla forces that drew wide support from Maya communities. From 1981 to 1983 state army and paramilitary forces resorted to scorched earth tactics that two different truth commissions subsequently characterized as genocidal. During the war, the military designated the town as a 'green zone' (a region sympathetic to and supportive of the military's counterinsurgency project). …

Self-Transcendence And Spiritual Well-Being In Participants Of Short-Term, Faith-Based, Foreign, Health Care Missions, Elizabeth Ann Fiske May 2009

Self-Transcendence And Spiritual Well-Being In Participants Of Short-Term, Faith-Based, Foreign, Health Care Missions, Elizabeth Ann Fiske

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate the presence and possible relationship of self-transcendence and spiritual well-being in persons who have completed at least one short-term, foreign, health care mission (SFHCM). There is a paucity of literature related to SFHCM; however, these trips are becoming increasingly commonplace. In the anecdotal literature, SFHCM are often described as life changing. The descriptions of this growth experience in the literature are quite similar to the concept of self-transcendence as defined in the nursing literature. Reed's (2003) middle range theory of self-transcendence was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The major …
