Homological Dimensions And Regular Rings, Alina Iacob, Srikanth B. Iyengar Nov 2009

Homological Dimensions And Regular Rings, Alina Iacob, Srikanth B. Iyengar

Alina Iacob

A question of Avramov and Foxby concerning injective dimension of complexes is settled in the affirmative for the class of noetherian rings. A key step in the proof is to recast the problem on hand into one about the homotopy category of complexes of injective modules. Analogous results for flat dimension and projective dimension are also established.

Maximum Likelihood Estimates Of Species Trees: How Accuracy Of Phylogenetic Inference Depends Upon The Divergence History And Sampling Design, John Mccormack, Huateng Huang, L. Knowles Sep 2009

Maximum Likelihood Estimates Of Species Trees: How Accuracy Of Phylogenetic Inference Depends Upon The Divergence History And Sampling Design, John Mccormack, Huateng Huang, L. Knowles

John E. McCormack

The understanding that gene trees are often in discord with each other and with the species trees that contain them has led researchers to methods that incorporate the inherent stochasticity of genetic processes in the phylogenetic estimation procedure. Recently developed methods for species-tree estimation that not only consider the retention and sorting of ancestral polymorphism but also quantify the actual probabilities of incomplete lineage sorting are expected to provide an improvement over earlier summary-statistic based approaches that discard much of the information content of gene trees. However, these new methods have yet to be tested on truly challenging evolutionary histories …

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Error Reduction For Complex Systems, Robert A. Mcdonald Sep 2009

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Error Reduction For Complex Systems, Robert A. Mcdonald

Robert A. McDonald

The cost-benefit tradeoff of analysis fidelity in complex systems analysis has been posed as an optimization problem providing quantitative guidance for investment in improving analysis. A nonlinear constrained optimizer to solve this problem has been integrated into an error tradeoff environment providing an intuitive tool for the decision maker to consider investment in fidelity at the same time as design decisions are considered. An example demonstrates the efficacy of the improved interface to enable fidelity improvement investment decisions.

Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Of An Extreme Aspect Ration Hale Uav, Bryan Morrisey, Robert A. Mcdonald

Robert A. McDonald

Development of High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) aircraft systems is part of a vision for a low cost communications/surveillance capability. Applications of a multi payload aircraft operating for extended periods at stratospheric altitudes span military and civil genres and support battlefield operations, communications, atmospheric or agricultural monitoring, surveillance, and other disciplines that may currently require satellite-based infrastructure. The central goal of this research was the development of a multidisciplinary tool for analysis, design, and optimization of HALE UAVs, facilitating the study of a novel configuration concept. Applying design ideas stemming from a unique WWII-era project, a "pinned wing" HALE aircraft …

Flexible Work Arrangements: Improving Job Quality And Workforce Stability For Low-Wage Workers And Their Employers, Jessica Glenn, Liz Watson

Published Reports

In 2009, workers and their families across the country felt the impact of serious economic downturn, with unemployment reaching a 26-year high. While recent news suggests things may be improving, we cannot forget that for many low-wage and hourly workers -- who now represent over a quarter of the U.S. workforce -- the recession only exacerbated their ongoing struggle to hold down quality jobs while caring for their families.

Low-wage workers face many of the same challenges that the rest of us face in reconciling our work, family and personal lives, but for many of these workers, it's simply a …

John E. McCormack

Landscape genetics is an emerging discipline that utilizes environmental and historical data to understand geographic patterns of genetic diversity. Niche modelling has added a new dimension to such efforts by allowing species–environmental associations to be projected into the past so that hypotheses about historical vicariance can be generated and tested independently with genetic data. However, previous approaches have primarily utilized DNA sequence data to test inferences about historical isolation and may have missed very recent episodes of environmentally mediated divergence. We type 15 microsatellite loci in California mule deer and identify five genetic groupings through a Structure analysis that are …

It Didn’T Start With Proposition 187: One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Nativist Legislation In California, Glen Gendzel Apr 2009

It Didn’T Start With Proposition 187: One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Nativist Legislation In California, Glen Gendzel

Faculty Publications, History

The writer surveys California's long history of nativist legislation. In doing so, he demonstrates that three recent Californian ballot initiatives—Proposition 187, a 1994 ballot that denied public services such as education and nonemergency medical care to so-called illegal aliens, Proposition 209, which banned affirmative action in the public sector, and Proposition 227, which banned bilingual education in public schools—were not just a spasmodic backlash against recent demographic trends but were the culmination of a century-and-a-half of nativist politics in California. He shows that, from the beginning of statehood, anti-immigrant laws aimed at Latin-Americans and Asian-Americans have received broad support from …

A User Friendly Interface For Gaussian Process Metamodeling, Collin R. Baukol, Robert A. Mcdonald, Nicholas Delmas

Robert A. McDonald

As research into metamodeling and using advanced metamodeling techniques continues, it is important to remember design engineers who need to use these advancements. Even experienced engineers may not be well versed in the material and mathematical background that is currently required to generate and fully comprehend advanced complex metamodels. A user friendly metamodeling environment is being developed to help bridge the gap that is currently growing between the research community and the design engineers. This tool allows users to easily create, modify, and assess the quality of metamodels.

Senior Design At Cal Poly: A Recipe For Success, Robert A. Mcdonald, Jordi Puig-Suari, Dave Esposto, Bruce Wright Jan 2009

Senior Design At Cal Poly: A Recipe For Success, Robert A. Mcdonald, Jordi Puig-Suari, Dave Esposto, Bruce Wright

Robert A. McDonald

The Aerospace Engineering Department at Cal Poly has, over the years, evolved a unique recipe for Senior Design. This recipe has been applied to the capstone Aircraft and Spacecraft design courses and will soon be extended to an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle design course. This recipe consists primarily of a year long design sequence with a great deal of participation from the region's aerospace industry. The Cal Poly recipe has proven to be both flexible and effective. The authors believe it could be adapted and applied in a similar manner at other institutions with a similar degree of success.

Underpowered Aircraft - Performance And Operational Possibilities, Andrew S. Ezzard, Michael R. Vallone, Robert A. Mcdonald Jan 2009

Underpowered Aircraft - Performance And Operational Possibilities, Andrew S. Ezzard, Michael R. Vallone, Robert A. Mcdonald

Robert A. McDonald

A unique configuration, known as an Underpowered Aircraft, allows for the modification of gliding flight vehicles for increased range and lower cost when compared with fully powered flight vehicles. Intentionally under-sizing the powerplant for a flight vehicle allows the designer to choose a powerplant that will not only perform the mission requirements, but will also provide the customer with the most cost effective solution, as some missions may not require fully powered flight. Specifically, the underpowered aircraft concept studied in this paper is a gliding flight aircraft that does not have enough power for climbing or level flight, but does …

Effect Of Chirality Of Small Molecule Organofluorine Inhibitors Of Amyloid Self-Assembly On Inhibitor Potency, Abha Sood, Abid Shaikh, Samson Hailemichael, Michelle Foster, Béla Török, Marianna Török Jan 2009

Effect Of Chirality Of Small Molecule Organofluorine Inhibitors Of Amyloid Self-Assembly On Inhibitor Potency, Abha Sood, Abid Shaikh, Samson Hailemichael, Michelle Foster, Béla Török, Marianna Török

Abid Shaikh

The effect of enantiomeric trifluoromethyl-indolyl-acetic acid ethyl esters on the fibrillogenesis of Alzheimer’s amyloid β (Aβ) peptide is described. These compounds have been previously identified as effective inhibitors of the Aβ self-assembly in their racemic form. Thioflavin-T Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy were applied to assess the potency of the chiral target compounds. Both enantiomers showed significant inhibition in the in vitro assays. The potency of the enantiomeric inhibitors appeared to be very similar to each other suggesting the lack of the stereospecific binding interactions between these small molecule inhibitors and the Aβ peptide.

Who Said What? The Effects Of Source Cues In Issue Frames, Todd K. Hartman, Christopher R. Weber Jan 2009

Who Said What? The Effects Of Source Cues In Issue Frames, Todd K. Hartman, Christopher R. Weber

Todd K. Hartman

Drawing on previous research concerning the role that source cues play in political information processing, we examine whether an ideological identity match between the source of a framed message and the respondent moderates framing effects. We test our hypotheses in two experiments concerning attitudes toward a proposed rally by the Ku Klux Klan. In Experiment 1 (N = 274), we test our hypothesis in a simple issue framing experiment. We find that framing effects occur for strong identifiers only when there is a match between the ideology of the speaker and respondent. In Experiment 2 (N = 259), we examine …

Gay And Transgender Rights In India: Naz Foundation V. Government Of Nct Of Delhi, Anjaneya Das

Anjaneya Das

Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, a figment of colonial creation, has criminalised ‘unnatural sexual acts’ since its application as law in 1862. Homosexuality falls within such acts and may attract punitive measures. In the previous century, legislatures and judiciaries across the globe have upheld laws criminalising homosexuality and transgender behaviour, justifying them on grounds of public decency and morality. With the advent of the contemporary epoch, the movement against the repressive and oppressive nature of Section 377 grew exponentially and reached its culmination in Naz Foundation v. Government of NCT of Delhi, wherein the Delhi High Court recognized …

Measuring Measuring: Toward A Theory Of Proficiency With The Constructing Measures Framework, Brent M. Duckor, K Draney, M Wilson

Faculty Publications

This paper is relevant to measurement educators who are interested in the variability of understanding and use of the four building blocks in the Constructing Measures framework (Wilson, 2005). It proposes a uni-dimensional structure for understanding Wilson’s framework, and explores the evidence for and against this conceptualization. Constructed and fixed choice response items are utilized to collect responses from 72 participants who range in experience and expertise with constructing measures. The data was scored by two raters and was analyzed with the Rasch partial credit model using ConQuest (1998). Guided by the 1999 Testing Standards, analyses of validity and reliability …

Bringing Home The Trash: Do Differences In Foraging Lead To Increased Plastic Ingestion In Laysan Albatrosses?, L C. Young, C Vanderlip, D C. Duffy, V Afanasyev, Scott A. Shaffer

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

When searching for prey, animals should maximize energetic gain, while minimizing energy expenditure by altering their movements relative to prey availability. However, with increasing amounts of marine debris, what once may have been ‘optimal’ foraging strategies for top marine predators, are leading to sub-optimal diets comprised in large part of plastic. Indeed, the highly vagile Laysan albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) which forages throughout the North Pacific, are well known for their tendency to ingest plastic. Here we examine whether Laysan albatrosses nesting on Kure Atoll and Oahu Island, 2,150 km apart, experience different levels of plastic ingestion. Twenty two geolocators were …

When Repetition Isn’T The Best Practice Strategy: Examining Differing Levels Of Contextual Interference During Practice, Laura A. Stambaugh Jan 2009

When Repetition Isn’T The Best Practice Strategy: Examining Differing Levels Of Contextual Interference During Practice, Laura A. Stambaugh

Laura A. Stambaugh

Two experiments examined the effects of blocked and random practice schedules on the performance accuracy, speed, and temporal evenness of performance by wind players. Blocked schedules used repetitive practice orders, while random schedules constantly changed the order of tasks practiced. Beginning clarinet students completed three days of practice on three short technical tasks, in either a blocked or random order. Twenty-four hours after practice, beginning students who had practiced in the random order were able to play significantly faster than students who had practiced in the blocked order (F1,38=24.95, p<0.001, n2=0.92). Students in the blocked group performed significantly slower at 24-hour delayed retention than immediately after practice (p<0.001). Contrary to non-musical motor learning investigations, there was no speed-accuracy trade-off: students maintained high accuracy scores while speed gradually improved. In Experiment II, university wind students practiced three short technical tasks in either a blocked or random order for two days. Retention testing occurred 24-hours and one week following practice. Preliminary results were presented in the conference session.
