Architectural Sampling: The Integration And Manipulation Of Meaning, Jacob Stafford Thomas Dec 2009

Architectural Sampling: The Integration And Manipulation Of Meaning, Jacob Stafford Thomas

Masters Theses

This thesis is an investigation into the appropriation and assimilation of meaning by examining the relationship between the technique and meaning of the musical sample and meaning and memory in architecture. As a previously recorded sound integrated into a new work, the sample has a dual identity as both detail and artifact. It is a detail of two or more wholes: an original condition and the new condition, and an artifact from the context of the work from which it was taken. In architectural design, each recognizable form and spatial arrangement is a sample from a prototype with its own …

Redesigning The Megachurch: Reintroduction Of Sacred Space Into A Highly Functional Building, Javier Valencia Nov 2009

Redesigning The Megachurch: Reintroduction Of Sacred Space Into A Highly Functional Building, Javier Valencia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

"Megachurches offer a unique way of being religious in modern society; one that fits the social and religious context of many people says Scott Tumma “Beyond Megachurch myths”. These Massive congregations of two to fifteen thousand participants occupy an undeniable space in the religious and social landscape. It is not only their massive buildings, locations, activities or television broadcasts that make these churches important. It is the role that they play in changing society (Hartford, 2006)” Architecturally the Megachurch has failed today, it has become a “big box”, a well developed building which houses thousands of members and provides them …

Do The New Requirements For The Use Of Energy Efficient Lighting Design Mean The End Of Creativity, Dr. Karolina M. Zielinska

Dr. Karolina M. Zielinska-Dabkowska, IALD, IES, CIE, RIBA

This paper addresses issues strongly connected to recent environmental discussions which are currently taking place in Europe, Asia, America, Australia and other parts of the world about global warming, the Greenhouse Effect, light pollution and other negative impacts artificial lighting has on our planet and what can be done about it. The author also attempts to answer indirectly two of the most important questions for lighting designers, which are: • What is the future of the lighting designers profession? Will that future be bright? • Is it still possible to create amazing, aesthetically pleasing lighting solutions, in line with functional …

School of Urban and Public Affairs Publications

On July 16, 2009, the School of Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington hosted a daylong roundtable on how “climate leader” municipalities of North Central Texas—and urban planners in those communities—are responding to the looming challenge of climate change. The organizers invited the planning directors in selected North Central Texas communities to send staff members to participate. The targeted municipalities were those who are members of Cities for Climate Protection (ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability) or whose mayors have signed the Climate Protection Agreement (U.S. Conference of Mayors). Of the 17 such communities in the …

Is architecture design? Where does it begin? Where does it end? With every iconic architect comes an iconic chair. Mies Van Der Rohe's Barcelona Chair, Aalto's Artek stool. Where is the furniture by Irish Architects? As Irish architecture has become internationally recognised what has happened to our furniture? Is furniture design oflittle interest to current Irish architects and will this change with the current market conditions?

Forces Of Time: Nature, Perception, And The Spaces Of Architecture, April M. Gray Aug 2009

Forces Of Time: Nature, Perception, And The Spaces Of Architecture, April M. Gray

Masters Theses

The words of Octavio Paz, from his Drift of Shadows, poetically describe the cycle of water in nature involving the erosion and weathering of stone by the force of water, further enhanced by the force of wind. This succession of events in nature is one of inter-dependency. It is also one of temporality: one element of nature perpetually affecting another, a temporality engaging elements either by impeding or by propelling.

The landscape embraces, as created or destroyed by these natural forces. So, too, does architecture. As a natural force, flooding intrudes upon the landscape endangers architecture by filling the low-lying …

Building A Brighter Future Through Education: Student Housing For Single Parent Families, Carrie Cogsdale Jul 2009

Building A Brighter Future Through Education: Student Housing For Single Parent Families, Carrie Cogsdale

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

On the possibilities of a child the Center for Disease Control says, “Every Child

should have the opportunity to reach their full potential”. (CDC) Children who grow up

in low-income families are at risk of falling behind in education before they even enter

kindergarten. Single parents that struggle to provide food and shelter often lack the time

and the resources to provide the early education that their children need. A college

education could provide these parents and their children with a better quality of life.

University student housing could include built in childcare services, educational

assistance and peer support, for …

Reinventing Airspace: Spectatorship, Fluidity, Intimacy At Pek T3., Alberto Pepe Jun 2009

Reinventing Airspace: Spectatorship, Fluidity, Intimacy At Pek T3., Alberto Pepe

Alberto Pepe

In this article, I explore the contemporary practice of air travel conceptualizing airports as socio-technical mobilities. Drawing both from the notion of “space” posited by Michel de Certeau and that of “non-place” by Marc Augé, I argue that the supermodern nature of air travel has generated forms of crisis that have embedded themselves in the architecture and the modus operandi of contemporary airports. Airports are necessarily located in a physical and tangible sense, yet their function is so tightly coupled with transience, mobility and spectatorship, that they bring anthropological accounts of “place” to unprecedented extremes. In this article, I analyze …

Stroller Flâneur, Katerie Gladdys Jun 2009

Stroller Flâneur, Katerie Gladdys

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Pushing a baby stroller, I examine the minutiae of my suburban neighborhood, searching for patterns and narratives in the genealogies of architectural structures and topographies while simultaneously searching for items of interest for my son. My resulting observations collage both real and imagined systems into metaphors of community. The methodology informing this video is a gendered riff on the practice of the flâneur where the necessity of childcare becomes a platform for textualizing suburban space.

Condition / Recondition: Reconstruction Of The City And Its Collective Memory, C Lopez Jun 2009

Condition / Recondition: Reconstruction Of The City And Its Collective Memory, C Lopez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Worldwide, dense urban spaces have been organized and transformed by cultural values. However, in many cases, changes in economic and social conditions have resulted in fragmentation of neighborhood typologies, in terms of their physical characteristics and uses. Such spaces are a manifestation of development, expansion, dislocation and marginalization; a condition that can be improved through an architectural and urban strategy which inscribes emerging forces into the neglected zones of marginal territories. The contemporary context calls for a re-evaluation of public space. To fully engage the people, it is a necessary function of public space to blur landscape, architecture and infrastructure, …

"Re-Homing": Sustaining Housing First, Jennifer Mckinney Jun 2009

"Re-Homing": Sustaining Housing First, Jennifer Mckinney

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The problem of homelessness is an issue in every city of America. Increasingly there are more individuals and families that find themselves without a permanent residence due to varying factors. Traditionally, the approach to this crisis has been to shuffle from emergency shelters to transitional shelters towards temporary housing. However, this lengthy, regulated process prohibits a large portion of the homeless population from ever settling back into housing. It is also merely a stop gap for the issue and this process absorbs a large sum of resources in land, money and manpower. However, there is a new model emerging to …

Experience + Evolution: Exploring Nature As A Constant In An Evolving Culture And Building Type, Robin Plotkowski Jun 2009

Experience + Evolution: Exploring Nature As A Constant In An Evolving Culture And Building Type, Robin Plotkowski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Throughout time, our natural environment has been one of the only constants in our evolution. While cultures change and evolve, nature's beauty and positive effects on humans have always been present. Unfortunately, our built environment has generated much attention for its profound impact on our natural environment. Buildings in the United States consume a third of our total energy use, raw material use, and waste output, not to mention the negative effects they can have on our well-being, economy, health and productivity. In an effort to protect our natural environment, our built environment must become more responsible to the environment …

Ecological Design Patterns For Green Neighborhoods, Joseph P. Goldman May 2009

Ecological Design Patterns For Green Neighborhoods, Joseph P. Goldman

Masters Theses

Contemporary neighborhood design best practices respond to social and economic system factors. However, ecological problems, including water pollution, air pollution, and habitat destruction, have prompted the need for improved environmentally responsive patterns for neighborhood planning and building. Sustainable design focuses on creating human environments based on how ecological systems function. Through the analysis of ecological systems and contemporary neighborhood design best practices, design patterns can be formulated for the design of green neighborhoods. The purpose of this thesis project is to formulate ecological design patterns for designing green neighborhoods.

Indoor Outdoor Relationships At The Residential Scale, Benjamin H. George May 2009

Indoor Outdoor Relationships At The Residential Scale, Benjamin H. George

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The indoor-outdoor relationship has been important to mankind since the dawn of recorded history. Over the ages, and despite continual changes in culture, style and technology, the relationship has continued to endure and play an important role in the design and construction of both interior and exterior spaces. Despite its continued relevance little research has been done on the relationship.

This thesis examines the indoor-outdoor relationship in three distinct sections. The first section defines the relationship and discusses the various theoretical merits of the relationship. The second section is a broad overview of the historical treatment of the indoor-outdoor relationship. …
