Racial Reconciliation In Christian Ethics: Toward Starting A Conversation, Bryan Massingale
Racial Reconciliation In Christian Ethics: Toward Starting A Conversation, Bryan Massingale
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
In this article, delivered originally in 1998 at Marquette University, the author confronts the reality of racism by introducing the need for racial reconciliation. Addressing such issues as social structures and evangelical approaches to the question of race, Massingale ends with a critique of the approach of Catholic theologians and ethicists to racial justice. In the end, Massingale remarks that for Catholics the legacy of slavery continues to hinder an openness to the reality of Africans and African Americans in the Church and in society.

An Examination Of The Contemporary Viability Of Moltmann's Personal And Cosmic Eschatology For Evangelical And Roman Catholic Theology, Chris Wiley
Seminary Masters Theses
The following thesis will examine and critique Moltmann's personal and cosmic eschatology as compared and contrasted with the views of Joseph Ratzinger and Millard Erickson. These two theologians are chosen to represent critics from two schools of thought in response to Moltmann's theology of hope, namely those critical of his theological method and those critical of his political theology. This examination focuses on the viability of Moltmann's personal and cosmic eschatology in contemporary Evangelical and Catholic theology. This study begins with a review of Moltmann's methodology and general treatment of themes in his theology as they pertain to eschatology. This …
Preacher, Shepherd, Judge: The Role Of The Outlaw Prophet In American Film, Heather Clements
Preacher, Shepherd, Judge: The Role Of The Outlaw Prophet In American Film, Heather Clements
Journal of Religion & Film
U.S. understandings of violence and non-violence are often expressed in stereotypically simplistic terms by Americans and their critics. The maverick cowboy anti-hero who answers to his own code of honor, enforced by redemptive violence, is a quintessential symbol of this American ethos. An exploration of this theme in Pale Rider, Pulp Fiction and The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, which center on the tension between violence and non-violence through an outlaw protagonist and his use of Judeo-Christian scriptures, suggests that the true complexity of the American popular moral theology of violence and non-violence is being addressed …
Sexual Expression Among Black Women In Relationships With Men From Different Minority Racial Groups, Sara Tildon Burton
Sexual Expression Among Black Women In Relationships With Men From Different Minority Racial Groups, Sara Tildon Burton
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This research was a qualitative study designed to investigate the expression of Black woman in relationships with males from different racial minority groups. The primary objective was to learn more about how Black women express their sexuality in interracial relationships with their partners. This study interviewed a group of Black women (n=10) within interracial relationships and explored their experiences of expressing their sexuality within these relationships both psychologically and physically (Bean, 2002). Through their narratives, participants were able to convey the impact of their partner's racial and/or cultural background on their sexual expression. The majority of these participants (n=7) would …
The Value Of Buddhist Responses To Issues Of Overpopulation, Overconsumption, And Environmental Degradation, James H. Hitchcock
The Value Of Buddhist Responses To Issues Of Overpopulation, Overconsumption, And Environmental Degradation, James H. Hitchcock
Religious Studies Theses
As the global population continues to increase at an alarming rate, the world, as a whole, now faces the issue of overpopulation. If the world’s natural resource consumption and environmental pollution/destruction continue at their current pace, then the earth will eventually no longer be able to sustain all of its inhabitants. Social change is the only way to prevent this. The world’s religious traditions possess particular motivational qualities with respect to people’s worldviews and behaviors. All of the world’s religious traditions are responding, in some way, to overpopulation. Traditions in isolation, however, do not address the complexities of the current …

Book Review: Michael J. Perry, Toward A Theory Of Human Rights: Religion, Law, Courts (2007), Mark C. Modak-Truran
Mark C Modak-Truran
This book review analyzes Michael J. Perry's most recent book Toward a Theory of Human Rights: Religion, Law, Courts. Perry's book brings together two previously separate aspects of his thoughtful and pioneering scholarship dealing with the proper relation of morality (especially religious morality) to law and human rights and the role of courts in protecting human rights. Perry's argument concentrates on three related issues: whether the morality of human rights has a religious or secular ground or both, the relation between the morality of human rights and the law of human rights, and the proper role of courts in protecting …

Christian Anthropology And The Theory Of The Firm, Michael Lp Lower
Christian Anthropology And The Theory Of The Firm, Michael Lp Lower
Michael LP Lower
Catholic social thought (CST), a branch of moral theology, reflects Christian anthropology (an understanding of human nature that draws on Revelation and natural law theory). CST's understanding of what communities (such as the corporation) are for and how they can best achieve their ends are coloured by its anthropological underpinnings. The same, it is argued, is true for economic theories such as the theories of the firm based on Coase. This paper compares Christian anthropology with the implicit anthropology underpinning some of the dominant economic theories of the firm. Differences at this level go a long way to explaining mismatches …

Theology In Public Reason And Legal Discourse: A Case For The Preferential Option For The Poor, Russell Powell
Theology In Public Reason And Legal Discourse: A Case For The Preferential Option For The Poor, Russell Powell
Faculty Articles
There is a strange disconnect between the formal understanding of the separation of religion from government in the United States and the almost ubiquitous use of religious language in political discourse, not to mention the web of complicated religious motivations that sit on or just below the surface of policy debates. This paper presents an argument for the relevance of the principle of the "preferential option for the poor" from Catholic social thought in public reason and legal discourse in order to explore the possible advantages of making the veil between religion and the secular state more permeable. As a …

Paul And Asceticism In 1 Corinthians 9:27a, Kent L. Yinger
Paul And Asceticism In 1 Corinthians 9:27a, Kent L. Yinger
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Amidst the resurgence of interest in Paul and asceticism relatively little focus has been put upon one Pauline text with seemingly obvious ascetic potential: “I beat my body” (1 Corinthians 9:27a). After a brief introduction to the discussion of asceticism and an ascetic Paul, this article will survey the Wirkungsgeschichte of this text, especially in the patristic era, engage in exegesis of 1 Corinthians 9:27a, and draw conclusions as to the relevance of the text for discussion of Pauline asceticism.
