Illness Stories: From Recognizing The Significance In Care To Planning My Own Storied Practice, Jane Lachance
Illness Stories: From Recognizing The Significance In Care To Planning My Own Storied Practice, Jane Lachance
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
In this paper, stories of illness are identified as belonging to a specific genre of story that represents an ill person's interpretation of experience and hence the meaning(s) of illness. The ill person is recognized as member of a family embedded in a social setting with cultural mores that contribute to experience and meanings. The meaning of illness is significant because it affects the care of illness. This paper focuses on chronic illness, an illness without cure that is managed over a lifetime and is characterized by remission and exacerbation of symptoms. Our current bio-medical health care system reframes the …

Lost In A Plethora Of Concerns? Match, Mismatch And Hypnotism: The Case Of The New Zealand Public Sector, Bikram Chatterjee, Soheila Mirshekary
Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal
The paper is centred on the theme that the significance attached to attaining higher ‘efficiency’ standards in monetary/ numeric terms to attain better ‘economy’ in New Zealand may have led to a change in concept of ‘ethics.’ This is due to higher stress attached during the New Zealand public sector reform to attaining higher efficiency and economic supremacy compared to before the reform. Again, an endeavour to attain economic supremacy at the macro level does not lead to attaining higher efficiency standards at the specific organisational levels and vice versa. The authors suggest that the hypnotic state of the authors …

Computer Alert System That Promotes Patient Safety By Identifying Possible Contraindications Of Prescribed Physical Agents, Hong-Nan Shih, Jing-Hwa Wey, Chun-Chieh Chiu, Po-Wei Lin, Tsan-Hon Liou, Chi-Hsien Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
This study investigated and analyzed the prevalence of contraindications that can co-exist with a prescribed physical agent. To prevent likely complications, this study implemented a computer warning system, which prompts physiatrists to possible contraindications. Once a physical agent is prescribed, the system automatically reviewarticles the ICD-9 codes in the patients’ medical chart. Two pre-established databases are used in the warning system: one contains contraindications for each physical agent and the other has possible contraindications for each selected ICD-9 code. By cross-referencing between ICD-9 codes in a patient's chart and the two databases, the warning system was able to identify possible …

Transfer And The Fuzzy-Trace Theory, Michael Ryan Massey
Transfer And The Fuzzy-Trace Theory, Michael Ryan Massey
Theses
Transfer occurs when something is learned under particular circumstances and is applied in a new, somehow different, situation. This paper will argue that fuzzy-trace theory can be used to explain the process of transfer. The advantage of fuzzy-trace theory is found in a dual-process theory of memory. Fuzzy-trace theory explains a broad range of phenomena and has the strength to conquer the elusive problem of transfer. Trace-cue compatibility theory is a theory of memory retrieval. By combining the trace-cue compatibility theory with fuzzy-trace theory, we get a method for treating both memory storage and memory retrieval. This combination provides a …
Aristotle's Analytic Tools, Mary Mulhern
Aristotle's Analytic Tools, Mary Mulhern
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Aristotle developed analytic tools to deal with conceptual difficulties that were important in his time. Some of these tools are his explicit analysis of homonymy, his eightfold classification of subjects and predicates and its elaboration into the predicaments and predicables, his syntactical analysis of ordinary language sentences, and his construction of a formal language for deductive and demonstrative syllogistic. Some of these conceptual difficulties are traceable to theories of Ideas, in which definitory predicates were not distinguished from non-definitory ones, as for instance in Hypothesis V of the Parmenides, where it is argued that the (non-existent) one is not equal …

Presented in the Winter 2006-2007 issue of the Global Resources Newsletter, the German-North American Resources Partnership issue. Online portals and digital gateways into focused subject and area studies are both boons and blessings. For German Studies but even more extensively, for all disciplines relevant to the German-North American Resources Partnership this past year has seen explosive growth in the preparation, expansion, proofing, and proclamation of virtual libraries, scholarly digital projects, and multidisciplinary portals. German digital scholarship has reached a maturity that calls for the types of systematic registry and centralized access that are vital to researchers from Aachen to Zzyzx.

Evolution Of Numeracy And The National Numeracy Network, Bernard L. Madison, Lynn Arthur Steen
Evolution Of Numeracy And The National Numeracy Network, Bernard L. Madison, Lynn Arthur Steen
Numeracy
The National Numeracy Network grew from heightened awareness of the complex and sophisticated nature of quantitative literacy and the resulting need for interdisciplinary attention to education for quantitative literacy in schools and colleges. This complexity and sophistication applies especially to the US where it is fueled by an agile economy and the needs of a democratic society. This paper describes the environment surrounding the National Numeracy Network’s establishment, some of its activities, and some complementary and synergistic actions by other professional societies. The paper concludes with a sample of quantitative literacy programs in colleges and universities

Attitudes Of Librarians In Selected Nigerian Universities Toward The Use Of Ict, Paul Adesola Adekunle, Rosnold Ogie Omoba, Adeyinka Tella
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study uses a descriptive survey to study the attitude of selected librarians in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, toward information communication technology (ICT). The population includes 41 librarians in four institutions. Data were collected using an instrument adapted from the Igberia and Chakrabarti (1990) Computer Anxiety and Attitude Towards Microcomputer Utilization (CAATMU) scale, and the librarian attitude questionnaire developed by Ramzan (2004). Two research questions were developed to guide the study. The results show that librarians have a positive attitude toward ICT and that training and knowledge are the sine qua non for a positive attitude. The fear of ICT …

Worldview Construction: International Relations Concepts Embedded In Elementary Social Studies Textbooks, Louise Massey Strauss
Worldview Construction: International Relations Concepts Embedded In Elementary Social Studies Textbooks, Louise Massey Strauss
Open Access Dissertations
Early civic education is crucial for worldview formation compatible with living in an increasingly interdependent world. In U.S. public schools, social studies is the locus of civic education. Social studies textbooks are the container of civic subject matter and teachers are its transmitters. Traditionally, civic education has been linked with national identity creation. In this study, educators are challenged to stimulate a complementary cosmopolitan identity because of social, political, and economic globalization trends and transition to an Information (and instant communication) Age. Using the social constructivist perspective, a content analysis model was developed for multi-state study of elementary social studies …

The Role Of Egyptian Film In Stereotyping Single Women, Heba Metwally Ibrahim Metwally
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Due to the increasing rates of single or still-unmarried women, also known as spinsters or Awanes, shaping the perceptions of these women is a problem facing Egyptian society. In this paper, the researcher assesses the effects of the media's depiction of these women, specifically focusing on the movie industry. By conducting a content analysis of Egyptian movies, as well as an examination of the notion of spinsters in language, history and culture, this study demonstrates the impact of movies in constructing a negative image and shaping the perception of unmarried women within Egyptian society. Through in-depth interviews, field observation in …

From Teacher To Teller: How Applied Storytelling Informs Autobiographical Instruction., Peggy Rosann Kent
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis uses autobiographical inquiry to "re-member" how I came to understand that applied storytelling was a valid teaching tool in facilitating autobiographical expression in mature learners. It is an examination of how story sharing and story listening can transform a continuing education classroom into a learning community. Applied storytelling can help elders reframe their negative mental models about the value of their stories, memory, and mythology and create opportunities for positive story sharing experiences. I selected highlights of my journey that best represented my experience and use of applied storytelling techniques. Each chapter includes an exercise and reflection as …

While there are facts that are known about Claudius Greer Clemmer, there is much that is not known. By most accounts, he was a generous man who grew up during some of the hardest years of the Great Depression, worked to get an education, and had a successful teaching career. Clemmer worked diligently to do what he could to support himself and his family, working at two jobs. When his career track changed from teaching to business, in 1946, he experienced success in business and investments, sharing that wealth with East Tennessee State University and others. The intent of this …
Fuzzy Logic Techniques Applied To A Switchgrass Ecological Site Suitability Model For The State Of Mississippi, Michele Louise Maxson
Fuzzy Logic Techniques Applied To A Switchgrass Ecological Site Suitability Model For The State Of Mississippi, Michele Louise Maxson
Theses and Dissertations
Fuzzy logic provides a natural way of dealing with models that require the modeler or user to interpret linguistic variables in order to make a decision. This study focuses on employing fuzzy logic methodologies in order to create an Alamo switchgrass ecological site suitability map for the state of Mississippi. The inputs in the model are available water content (AWC), slope, pH, drainage, color, and texture. All variables were examined through the fist six inches (15cm) of soil. These six variables were assigned fuzzy restrictions based on expert knowledge from plant and soil scientists, combined using the fuzzy additive weighting …
