This dissertation attempts to trace the shifting relationship between the fields of Rhetoric and Poetry in Western culture by focusing on poetry contests and competitions during several different historical eras. In order to examine how the distinction between the two fields is contingent on a variety of local factors, this study makes use of research in contemporary cognitive neuroscience, particularly work in categorization and cognitive linguistics, to emphasize the provisional nature of conceptual thought; that is, on the type of mental activity that gives rise to conceptualizations such as “Rhetoric” and “Poetry.” The final portions of the research attempt to …

Devices and methods for cutaneous delivery of a composition are provided, wherein the composition is passed through an ordered nanoporous membrane in fluid communication with a reservoir. The nanoporous membrane includes a plurality of aligned hollow nanotubules coated with a continuous polymer matrix, and etched to open the plurality of hollow nanotubules and form pores. In one embodiment, the etching step oxidizes an end of the nanotubules to form carboxylate groups. The ordered nanoporous membrane further includes at least one additional functional unit bound to the carboxylate groups. This dissertation connects classical theories regarding the enthymeme and thumos (a Greek word commonly translated as "heart," "mind," or one's "capacity for emotion") to modern theories of images and emotion in order to reconsider the central role of visual discourse in persuasion, ideology, and subject formation. Since "enthymeme" comes from en and thymos, meaning "in heart," etymologically the enthymeme is an argument that is realized in an individual's thumos.

Composition instructors agree writing instruction should focus on helping students become better writers. Pedagogical commonality, however, ends here. Composition instructors disagree about what constitutes good writing, what student should be learning, and how best to approach a composition classroom. I argue that pedagogical diversity among composition instructors is detrimental to the discipline of Rhetoric and Composition, because it has contributed to the public perception that we have no teachable content. Focusing around the removal of and reintegration of rhetoric from American college English departments, I argue composition studies and the rhetorical tradition have historically been viewed as separate disciplines. The growth of composition has led to competing rhetorical and pedagogical theories within the discipline. Pragmatic philosophy supplies a conceptual basis for beginning to reconcile seemingly disparate composition theories. I begin this thesis by surveying pragmatism and identifying key traits that characterize new and hopeful developments in the philosophy. Next, I review composition pedagogics, notably expressivism and cultural studies, as I begin to question their division. It is well-understood that reductions in air quality play a significant role in both environmental and human health. Interactions between ozone depletion and global climate change will significantly alter atmospheric chemistry which, in turn, will cause changes in concentrations of natural and human-made gasses and aerosols. Models predict that tropospheric ozone near the surface will increase globally by up to 10 to 30 ppbv (33 to 100% increase) during the period 2000 to 2100. Temporal Changes In Environmental Characteristics And Diversity Of Net Phytoplankton In A Freshwater Lake, C. Chattopadhyay, T. C. Banerjee

Temporal changes in the species composition, seasonal abundance, and diversity of net phytoplankton (NPP) were investigated in relation to some environmental characteristics of the water and sediment of Lake Krishnasayer, an ancient man-made shallow freshwater lake, located at Burdwan, India, between January and December 2003. In all, 43 species and 7 genera were identified from the weekly samples taken from a 1 x 1 x 1-m water column at sites I and II. The most abundant taxa were Cyanophyta (34.8%-37.8%) and Bacillariophyta (34.2%-34.3%), whilst Euglenophyta was the least abundant (4%-5.3%). The relationships (r) were significant (P < 0.05) and positive between water temperature and abundance of Euglenophyta, Secchi transparency, and Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta, dissolved oxygen and Chlorophyta, dissolved chloride, and Cyanophyta and Euglenophyta, phosphate-phosphorus and Cyanophyta, and organic carbon and Bacillariophyta. In contrast, the relationships (r) were significant (P < 0.05), but inverse between water temperature and abundance of Bacillariophyta, Secchi transparency and Euglenophyta, dissolved chloride and Bacillariophyta, nitrate-nitrogen and Euglenophyta, and organic carbon and Euglenophyta. Furthermore, regression coefficients (b) indicated a significant (P < 0.05) positive relationship between Secchi transparency and overall NPP abundance, and a significant (P < 0.05) inverse relationship between silica and overall NPP abundance. The diversity indicated high values with peaks in species abundance in March, May, and September at site I, and in May, September, and November at site II. The seasonal abundance and frequency of occurrence for a few dominant species of Cyanophyta (e.g., Anabaena circinalis, Nostoc carneum, Oscillatoria formosa, Rivularia haematitis, and Spirula subsalsa), Chlorophyta (e.g., Spirogyra communis, Ulothrix tenerrima, and Zygnema pectinum), Euglenophyta (e.g., Euglena viridis), and Bacillariophyta (e.g., Cyclotella glomerata, Navicula capitata, Nitzschia acicularis, and Pinnularia major) in the surface water of this lake were 3.3%-5.5%, respectively.

Determining mafic mineral composition of asteroid bodies is a topic reviewed by M.J. Gaffey et al. (2002). The iterative procedure discussed can be implemented as an algorithm, and such efforts revealed weaknesses that are examined in this work. We seek to illustrate the limits of this method and graphically determine its predictions. There are boundaries in the formulae given where the equations break down. In ranges where mafic mixtures are predicted, a method is illustrated that allows a decoupling of these mixtures into the constituents.

The aim of this study was to measure the effects of 12 weeks of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplementation on body composition, RER, RMR, blood lipid profiles, insulin sensitivity and appetite in exercising, normal-weight persons. In this double-blind, randomised, controlled trial, sixty-two non-obese subjects (twenty-five men, thirty-seven women) received either 3.9 g/d CLA or 3.9 g high-oleic acid sunflower oil for 12 weeks. Prior to and after 12 weeks of supplementation, oral glucose tolerance, blood lipid concentrations, body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and computerised tomography scans), RMR, resting and exercising RER and appetite were measured. This study examined questions concerning differences in the acyl composition of membrane phospholipids that have been linked to the faster rates of metabolic processes in endotherms versus ectotherms. In liver, kidney, heart and brain of the ectothermic reptile, Trachydosaurus rugosus, and the endothermic mammal, Rattus norvegicus, previous findings of fewer unsaturates but a greater unsaturation index (UI) in membranes of the mammal versus those of the reptile were confirmed. Part one is an original composition, Diamundo, for percussion, winds, strings, and loudspeakers, based on the poem of the same name by the Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade. It is scored for a chamber orchestra with a main ensemble formed by strings, piano, percussion, and guitar, plus electroacoustic sounds, and four solo wind instruments: flute, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone.
