The Effects Of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (Haart) On Neuropsychological Status In Hiv-Infection: A Prospective Study., Susan E. Hayman-Abello
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has resulted in significant reductions in HIV morbidity and mortality but the longitudinal effects on cognition are less well known. This longitudinal study examined the effects of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) on cognitive performance in adults with HIV. Three hundred eighty-six adults representing all stages of HIV disease were tested at baseline and 180 of those subjects underwent a follow-up assessment. Subjects who were on HAART outperformed subjects on a non-HAART regimen, and those taking no antiretroviral medications, on the Grooved Pegboard Test, and were less impaired overall, at Time 1 …

Society Of Souls: Spirit, Friendship, And The Antebellum Reform Imagination, Robert Kent Nelson
Society Of Souls: Spirit, Friendship, And The Antebellum Reform Imagination, Robert Kent Nelson
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study explores the central role that a spiritualized friendship played in the thought and writings of antebellum reformers. It identifies a spiritual sensibility that was widely shared by many radical New England activists of the 1830s, 1840s, and 1850s regardless of their specific denominational beliefs, and argues that this sense of spirituality motivated them to become activists who labored to transform their society.;Specifically, this dissertation analyzes the work and writings of a variety of reformers who believed that spirit or soul could serve as a mechanism for leveling some of the most dominant cultural and institutional power hierarchies of …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Polymorphisms in the genes encoding cytochrome p450 (CYP) and thiopurine S-methyl transferase (TPMT) enzymes catalyze the metabolic reactions of several drugs. These polymorphisms might be responsible for adverse drug reactions. Turkish population data for these genes still needs to be elucidated. We aimed to detect the allele frequencies of thiopurine S-methyl transferase (TPMT), cytochrome p4503A4*1B (CYP3A4*1B) and cytochrome p4503A4*3 (CYP3A5*3) gene variants in the Turkish population. We examined the TPMT (*1, *2, *3A, *3C), CYP3A4*1B and CYP3A5*3 variant allele frequencies in a group of healthy Turkish Caucasian blood donors by using PCR-RFLP, allele-specific PCR and direct sequencing techniques. The frequencies …

Identification And Seasonal Distribution Of Airborne Fungi In Urban Outdoor Air In An Eastern Black Sea Turkish Town, Murat Topbaş, İlknur Tosun, Gamze Çan, Neşe Kaklikkaya, Faruk Aydi̇n
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The aim of the present report was to evaluate the prevalent species of airborne fungi in the outdoor environment in the city of Trabzon, Turkey. The area is surrounded by high mountains running parallel to the Black Sea, and has a mostly rainy and temperate climate together with a most varied and widespread flora. Air samples were collected in four seasons by means of the gravitational settling method using petri dishes with SDA culture media. Those fungi colonies that formed after an incubation period of 7-10 days at 25 ºC were determined on the basis of micro and macromorphological features. …

Diagnosis Of Lafora Body Disease By Axillary Skin Biopsy, Selçuk Çomoğlu, Şenay Özbakir, Emel Peşi̇nci̇
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Lafora body is a rarely seen and progressive disease which is characterized by mental decline, myoclonus and generalized epilepsy. Definitive diagnosis is made with biopsy showing typical spherical PAS positive inclusion bodies. In this article, we present a case who had myoclonus, generalize seizure and dementia and diagnosed with Lafora body disease. Diagnosis was confirmed by axillary skin biopsy. Na Valproat 15 mg/kg was started by orally for myoclonic and generalized epilepsy. Partial improvement in both myoclonic and generalized seizure frequencies was seen.

Gastrointestinal Basidiobolomycosis As A Rare Etiology Of Bowel Obstruction, Alireza Fahimzad, Abdollah Karimi, Sedigheh Rafiee Tabatabaei, Mahbubeh Gerami Zadeh
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Basidiobolomycosis is an unusual fungal infection that manifests in the skin and rarely involves the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal Basidiobolomycosis is rarely reported in the medical literature. We report a 1.5-year-old boy from the south of Iran with bowel obstruction which was diagnosed as gastrointestinal Basidiobolomycosis.

A Selective Ideational Apraxic Agraphia For Consonants, Serpi̇l Demi̇rci̇
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: The proposed graphemic area in the dominant hemisphere contains letter representations that are responsible for guiding the skilled movements required for writing and for recognition of the physical features of letters. Dysfunction in this system may cause apraxic agraphia. In this study, writing performance of a right-handed, left hemisphere damaged, 12-year old apraxic agraphic patient with a native language of shallow ortography is analysed. Methods: Writing performance was evaluated with several different word lists, each holding same amount of letters, novel words (non-word), words, functors, and high-imagery and low-imagery words. Non-words were derived from words by changing a single …
