Thermodynamic And Neutron Structural Studies Of Hydrocarbon Adsorption On Mgo Nanocubes, Richard E. Cook
Thermodynamic And Neutron Structural Studies Of Hydrocarbon Adsorption On Mgo Nanocubes, Richard E. Cook
Doctoral Dissertations
Presented is a series of thermodynamic and neutron scattering experiments used to probe the nature of the hydrocarbon - MgO (100) interaction. High-resolution volumetric isotherms are used to probe the wetting, layer transitions, heats of adsorption, two-dimensional compressibilities, and identify possible phase transitions of thin films of benzene, ethane, and n - pentane on MgO powders. Neutron diffraction experiments were used to probe the structure and identify any phase transitions within monolayer films of ethane, butane and n -pentane.
Benzene adsorption, while showing no visible layering steps, shows a shift in the shape of the isotherm for p/po > 0.7. …

The Decreasing Ontological Density Of The State In Catholic Social Doctrine, Patrick Mckinley Brennan
The Decreasing Ontological Density Of The State In Catholic Social Doctrine, Patrick Mckinley Brennan
Working Paper Series
Over the last century-plus, Catholic social thought has gradually reduced the ontological density of the state, to the point that the state now appears to have only a tentative grasp on the natural law basis of its legitimacy. During the first part of the twentieth century, Catholic social doctrine tended to view the legitimate state as a participant in the divine rule; although draped in a sacred mantle, the state was subject to the limits imposed by the divine and natural law. In response to the totalitarian states’ transgressing of those limits at mid-century, Catholic thinkers reduced the scope and …

A Key And Classic Text: Ephesians 5:21-33, Katinka Nadine Ellen Evers
A Key And Classic Text: Ephesians 5:21-33, Katinka Nadine Ellen Evers
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper is an exegesis of the difficult pericope of Ephesians 5:21-33, a stumbling block to many, but truly a cornerstone when viewed through Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. After a brief introduction familiarizing readers with the passage, this paper shows how the section is treated by
Patristic authors (with Origen and Saint Jerome as examples), by feminist theologian E. Elizabeth Johnson, and by Peter T. O’Brien (who demonstrates an Evangelical Protestant view). Finally, Pope John Paul II’s theology is introduced, along with his concept of mutual submission and his emphasis on the importance of Ephesians 5:21-33. …

Sister Mary Emil Penet, Ihm: Founder Of The Sister Formation Conference, Joan Glisky
Sister Mary Emil Penet, Ihm: Founder Of The Sister Formation Conference, Joan Glisky
Journal of Catholic Education
Mary Emil Penet, I.H.M., (1916-2001) used her talents and charisma to shape the first national organization of American women religious, the Sister Formation Conference (SFC; 1954-1964), facilitating the integrated intellectual, spiritual, psychological, and professional development of vowed women religious. In the decade preceding Vatican II, her leadership generated a renewal among religious communities focusing first on preparing young sister teachers, then sisters of all ages, whatever their ministries. Her educational contributions affected sisters’ development and ministries, their contribution to Vatican II aggiornamento, and later touched the lives of female college students, seminarians, and Catholic laity.

Bibliography Versus Auto-Bibliography: Tackling The Transformation Of Traditions In The Research Process, Nancy Babb
Bibliography Versus Auto-Bibliography: Tackling The Transformation Of Traditions In The Research Process, Nancy Babb
Law Librarian Journal Articles
Ms. Babb reports on a study conducted to determine whether researchers will identify the same works recommended by scholarly bibliographies if their searching is limited to the confines of the library catalog and its subject headings. She explores how the auto-bibliography of the catalog compares to more traditionally compiled bibliographies, and what—if anything—is sacrificed when users rely upon auto-bibliography rather than scholarly bibliography.

Causing Death For Compassionate Reasons In American Law, Richard Kay
Causing Death For Compassionate Reasons In American Law, Richard Kay
Faculty Articles and Papers
This essay, a revised version of the United States report on Euthanasia to be presented at the XVII International Congress of Comparative Law, surveys the state of the law, both decisional and statutory, on the permissibility of compassionately motivated actions to terminate human life. It deals with a range of legal categories: suicide, attempted suicide, euthanasia, assisted suicide and the termination of life-sustaining treatment. It highlights the deeply ambivalent attitudes held toward these actions in contemporary America and how this ambivalence has resulted in obscure and artificial distinctions.
Introduction: Comparative Ethics And The Crucible Of War, G. Scott Davis
Introduction: Comparative Ethics And The Crucible Of War, G. Scott Davis
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Michael Howard takes the title of his recent essay, The Invention of Peace, from the nineteenth-century jurist and historian of comparative law Henry Maine, who wrote that "war appears to be as old as mankind, but peace is a modem invention."' We moderns tend to assume that the great wars of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were aberrant eruptions marring the peaceful status quo, but the opposite better describes the long view. Outside the Garden of Eden, human communities have always been involved in political conflict and that conflict has regularly escalated to the use of lethal force, both …
