Adsorption Of Water Contaminants Onto Kenaf Fibers, Stephen Douglas Tolar Aug 2006

Adsorption Of Water Contaminants Onto Kenaf Fibers, Stephen Douglas Tolar

Theses and Dissertations

In this research, the adsorptive capacities of kenaf in the forms of chopped whole stalk, chopped core, and bast materials were evaluated for the removal of lead, zinc, and toluene from contaminated synthetic waste streams using traditional adsorption isotherm techniques. The effect of surface oxidation using ozone was observed with respect to the adsorption of metals. Hydraulic conductivity experiments were conducted to evaluate the head loss associated with packing a column with kenaf fibers and to determine the suitability of its use in dynamic packed column systems. B.E.T. surface areas were determined as well. Under increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, even …

Antioxidant Effect Of Zinc And Zinc-Metallothionein In The Acute Cytotoxicity Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Ehrlich Ascites Tumour Cells, Zacharias Suntres, Ed Lui Jul 2006

Antioxidant Effect Of Zinc And Zinc-Metallothionein In The Acute Cytotoxicity Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Ehrlich Ascites Tumour Cells, Zacharias Suntres, Ed Lui

Edmund M. K. Lui

This study was concerned with the role of zinc (Zn) and zinc-metallothionein (Zn-MT) in oxidative stress. Hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative injury was examined in Ehrlich ascites tumour cells isolated from control host mice, mice pretreated with 10 mg/kg ZnSO4 (i.p.) to increase cellular Zn/Zn-MT levels, and mice exposed to Zn-deficient diet to reduce the cellular Zn/Zn-MT levels. The results of the present study showed that Ehrlich cells with seven-fold differences in Zn-MT concentrations could be obtained by manipulating the Zn status of host mice and that high Zn and Zn-MT levels can make Ehrlich cells more resistant to H2O2-induced oxidative injury …

Synthesis Of Zinc Polyhedral Microspheres And Applications In Alkaline Zn-Mno_(2)Battery, Hua Ma, Chun-Sheng Li, Fang-Yi Cheng, Chun-Yuan Zhou, Feng Gao, Jun Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

The zinc polyhedral microspheres were synthesized by evaporation of pure zinc powders via a vapor-transport process. The results characterized by XRD and SEM show that the as-synthesized zinc powders are polyhedral microspheres with the diameter of 2~3 μm.The electrochemical investigation showed that the capacity of the as-assembled AA-size primary alkaline Zn-MnO_(2)battery was increased to 3.14 Ah under the constant discharge current of 100 mA by using the as-deposited microspherical zinc powders as the anode active materials and γ-MnO_(2)nanowires as the cathode active materials, indicating their potential application in high-energy batteries.

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Glutamate-134 (E134) is proposed to act as the general acid/base during the hydrolysis reaction catalyzed by the dapE-encoded N-succinyl-l,l-diaminopimelic acid desuccinylase (DapE) from Haemophilus influenzae. To date, no direct evidence has been reported for the role of E134 during catalytic turnover by DapE. In order to elucidate the catalytic role of E134, altered DapE enzymes were prepared in which E134 was substituted with an alanine and an aspartate residue. The Michaelis constant (K m) does not change upon substitution with aspartate but the rate of the reaction changes drastically in the following order: glutamate (100% …

Prooxidative Effect Of Copper-Metallothionein In The Acute Cytotoxicity Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Ehrlich Ascites Tumour Cells, Zacharias Suntres, Ed Lui

Edmund M. K. Lui

This study was concerned with the role of copper (Cu) and Cu-metallothionein (Cu-MT) in oxidative stress. Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))-induced oxidative injury was examined in Ehrlich ascites tumour cells isolated from host mice pretreated with 0, 1 or 2mg of CuSO(4) (ip) 24h earlier. Control Ehrlich cells contained low levels of Cu and Cu treatment produced dose-related increases in cellular Cu and Cu-MT levels and corresponding increases in sensitivity to oxidative toxicity of H(2)O(2) (LC(50), cell blebbing, lipid peroxidation, GSH depletion, and increase in intracellular free [Ca(2+)](i)). Hydrogen peroxide treatment also resulted in the oxidation of MT thiolates, reduction in the …

Seasonal And Spatial Patterns Of Metals At A Restored Copper Mine Site. I. Stream Copper And Zinc, Dustin G. Bambic, Charles N. Alpers, Peter G. Green, Eileen Fanelli, Wendy K. Silk

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Seasonal and spatial variations in metal concentrations and pH were found in a stream at a restored copper mine site located near a massive sulfide deposit in the Foothill copper-zinc belt of the Sierra Nevada, California. At the mouth of the stream, copper concentrations increased and pH decreased with increased streamflow after the onset of winter rain and, unexpectedly, reached extreme values 1 or 2 months after peaks in the seasonal hydrographs. In contrast, aqueous zinc and sulfate concentrations were highest during low-flow periods. Spatial variation was assessed in 400 m of reach encompassing an acidic, metal-laden seep. At this …

Materials and Methods: Eight-week-old female pregnant and non-pregnant albino (Wistar) rats were fed with diets containing either adequate (54 mg/kg) or low zinc (1 mg/kg) quantities for 18 days. Food intakes and body weight gain were recorded regularly. On day 19, after an overnight fast, blood samples were collected and animals dissected. Femur, pancreas, placenta and fetuses were removed. Concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, and urea; transaminases and …

The Effects Of Micronutrients On Pullets And Broilers, Danielle Armantine Lauzon Jan 2006

The Effects Of Micronutrients On Pullets And Broilers, Danielle Armantine Lauzon

LSU Master's Theses

Two experiments were conducted to determine the availability of various vitamin E (E) sources (absorbed to verxite or adsorbed to silica) in broilers. In Experiment 1, at 100 and 300 IU supplemental E, an average of 94 and 44% of E intake from verxite and silica, respectively, was excreted in the feces, but at 30 IU E, 49 and 45% of E intake was excreted in the feces. In Experiment 2 at 30 IU, 52 and 43% of E intake from verxite and silica was excreted (source, P < 0.02). Based on these results, E adsorbed to silica is more available. Two experiments were conducted to determine the relative bioavailability of organic versus inorganic sources of either Mn or Zn. In Experiment 1, Mn as MnSO4 or a Mn amino acid complex (Availa-Mn) were compared. In Experiment 2, ZnSO4 or a Zn amino acid complex (Availa-Zn) were compared. The results indicate that Availa-Mn is a more available source of Mn than MnSO4, but Availa-Zn is not as available as a source of Zn as ZnSO4. An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of organic sources of Zn, Mn, and Cu on White Leghorn pullet performance. Treatment diets consisted of a control diet with 66 ppm Zn as ZnSO4 or a combination of ZnSO4 and Availa-Zn, 66ppm Mn as MnSO4 or a combination of MnSO4 and Availa-Mn, and 10 ppm Cu as CuSO4 or a combination of CuSO4 and a Cu amino acid complex (Availa-Cu). Diets are inorganic sources (IO), organic Zn (OZ), organic Zn and Mn (OZM), or organic Zn, Mn, and Cu (OZMC). Addition of OZM increased (P < 0.08) intestinal tensile strength and increased (P < 0.06) grams of ash per bone compared with OZMC. Pullets fed OZ had a higher (P < 0.08) bone concentration of all minerals than pullets fed OZM. Total tibia Mn was decreased (P < 0.06) by OZMC, but total tibia Cu was increased (P < 0.08) by OZ addition over IO or OZM.

Attempted Synthesis Of 1-Cyclohepta-1,2-Dien-1-Ylbenzene And Wurtz-Like Condensation Products In The Reaction Of 1-(2,3-Dibromocyclohept-1-En-1-Yl)Benzene With Zinc, Mustafa Ceylan, Yakup Budak, M. Burcu Gürdere

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

7,7-Dibromo-1-phenylbicyclo[4.1.0]heptane 4 was synthesized and its thermal and silver ion-catalyzed rearrangements were studied. Alcohol 8 was converted to 1-(2,3-dibromocyclohept-1-en-1-yl)benzene 6. The zinc-mediated elimination of 1-(2,3-dibromocyclohept-1-en-1-yl)benzene 6 resulted in the formation of 2 isomeric Wurtz-like condensation products 15 and 16 (whose structural assignments were based on ^1H-and ^{13}C-NMR spectral data) instead of the expected 1-cyclohepta-1,2-dien-1-ylbenzene 14.
