Recent educational models of computer-based interactivity stress the important role of a learner’s cognition. It has been suggested that interactive learning tasks carried out in the context of an authentic, problem-based scenario will result in deeper, elaborative cognitive processing leading to greater conceptual understanding of the material presented. Research methods that have been used to investigate cognition and learning have traditionally included self-report questionnaires, focus groups, interviews and think-aloud protocols and, more recently in computer-based settings, interaction log file or ‘audit trail’ analysis. Arbitrary ratio sampling rate conversion (SRC) structure using B-spline interpolation is proposed for software defined radio (SDR) in this paper. By combining SRC with SDR’s transmitter/receiver filter, the constraint on SRC reconstruction filter can be relaxed, and an overall computational reduction can be achieved. The mixed-width B-spline is introduced so that both antiimaging and anti-aliasing requirements for SRC are satisfied. The passband droop introduced by the B-spline interpolation is compensated by a linear phase digital filter incorporated in the SRC structure so that the overall frequency response approaches the desired frequency response of the SDR’s transmitter/receiver filter. A quantum protocol for secure transmission of data using qubits is presented. This protocol sends one qubit in a round-trip to transmit one bit of data. The protocol offers an improvement over the BB84 QKD protocol. BB84, in conjunction with one-time pad encryption, has been shown to be unconditionally secure. However its security relies on the assumption that the qubit source device does not emit multiple replicas of the same qubit for each transmitted bit. The system employs the structured light approach to solve the correspondence problem. Parents of autistic children face enormous challenges, but very little attention has been paid to their psychological needs. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has previously been tested with parents as part of a comprehensive package, but not yet alone. The present study used a within-subject, repeated measures design to test the effects of a 2-day (14 hour) group ACT workshop on 20 normal parents/guardians of children diagnosed with autism. Parents were assessed three weeks before the workshop, one week before, one week after, and three months after. Because much of their fauna remains unstudied and in many cases undescribed, these systems present real challenges for effective management. In eastern Australia the study of estuarine fauna is often further complicated by its patchy distributions. This is particularly the case for assemblages of sessile invertebrates in coastal saline lakes. Foliage moisture stress may be detectable by remote sensing using high resolution spectral data, but meaningful diagnosis requires that plant water status be assessed on the ground under controlled conditions. Design parameters of an experimental plantation of E. camaldulensis (River red gum), were used to examine tree-level responses to moisture stress, as measured by xylem water potential, and relationships to physiological parameters including spectral reflectance, chlorophyll flurescence, and cholorphyll across a range of stress categories.

Manipulation and separation of micron-sized particles, particularly biological particles, using the dielectrophoretic effect is an emerging application in BioMEMS technology. This paper presents a numerical simulation for the four-phase traveling dielectrophoresis (DEP) using a novel meshless method - weighted least square finite difference (LSFD) scheme. The exact boundary condition and nonuniform point distribution were used in the calculation. Numerical results including the electrical potential, electrical field, traveling wave DEP forces and particle behavior are presented. This paper relates to the optimisation of structural design using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and presents an improved method for determining the fitness of genetic codes that represent possible design solutions by using a neural network to generalize fitness. Two problems that often impede design optimization using genetic algorithms are expensive fitness evaluation and high epistasis. In this paper we show that by using a neural network as a fitness approximator, optimal solutions to certain design problems can be achieved in significantly less generations and with considerably less fitness evaluations.

Harmonic monitoring has become an important tool for harmonic management in distribution systems. A comprehensive harmonic monitoring program has been designed and implemented on a typical electrical MV distribution system in Australia. The monitoring program involved measurements of the three-phase harmonic currents and voltages from the residential, commercial and industrial load sectors. Data over a three year period has been downloaded and available for analysis. This paper presents the evaluation of a design and architecture for browsing and searching MPEG-7 images. Our approach is novel in that it exploits concept lattices for the representation and navigation of image content. Prehistoric depositional signatures for large-scale washover involving marine inundation events such as storm and tsunami have been the subject of considerable research over the last 15 years. Much of this research has focused on the identification of sand sheets in back-barrier environments as depositional records for extreme washover events. All these deposits must have a sediment source, and by their nature, the most likely source of sediment for washover into back-barrier environments is the barrier itself. Firstly, a discrete cosine transform (DCT) based representation method is introduced to express the height distribution of the three-dimensional surface.
