Using Fmri To Explore Interactivity And Cognition: A Methodological Case Study, Barney Dalgarno, Gregor Kennedy, Susan J. Bennett

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

Recent educational models of computer-based interactivity stress the important role of a learner’s cognition. It has been suggested that interactive learning tasks carried out in the context of an authentic, problem-based scenario will result in deeper, elaborative cognitive processing leading to greater conceptual understanding of the material presented. Research methods that have been used to investigate cognition and learning have traditionally included self-report questionnaires, focus groups, interviews and think-aloud protocols and, more recently in computer-based settings, interaction log file or ‘audit trail’ analysis. While all of these techniques help researchers understand students’ learning processes, all are limited in that they …

Arbitrary Ratio Sample Rate Conversion Using B-Spline Interpolation For Software Defined Radio, Xiaojing Huang Jan 2006

Arbitrary Ratio Sample Rate Conversion Using B-Spline Interpolation For Software Defined Radio, Xiaojing Huang

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Arbitrary ratio sampling rate conversion (SRC) structure using B-spline interpolation is proposed for software defined radio (SDR) in this paper. By combining SRC with SDR’s transmitter/receiver filter, the constraint on SRC reconstruction filter can be relaxed, and an overall computational reduction can be achieved. The mixed-width B-spline is introduced so that both antiimaging and anti-aliasing requirements for SRC are satisfied. The passband droop introduced by the B-spline interpolation is compensated by a linear phase digital filter incorporated in the SRC structure so that the overall frequency response approaches the desired frequency response of the SDR’s transmitter/receiver filter. To make the …

Secure Data Transmission Using Quibits, Iman Marvian, Saied Hosseini-Khayat Jan 2006

Secure Data Transmission Using Quibits, Iman Marvian, Saied Hosseini-Khayat

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

A quantum protocol for secure transmission of data using qubits is presented. This protocol sends one qubit in a round-trip to transmit one bit of data. The protocol offers an improvement over the BB84 QKD protocol. BB84, in conjunction with one-time pad encryption, has been shown to be unconditionally secure. However its security relies on the assumption that the qubit source device does not emit multiple replicas of the same qubit for each transmitted bit. If this happens a multi-qubit emission attack can be launched. In addition, BB84 cannot be used to send predetermined bit strings as it generates a …

Using Scenario Planning In The Evaluation Of Information Security Applications, Laura Perusco

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper provides a broad overview of the scenario approach as it relates to the evaluation of location based services (LBS) technologies and their appl ication. A scenario is a plausible vision of the future, based around a particular technology or application and developed via a scenario planning methodology. The main worth of the scenario planning approach is that it allows an application to be evaluated in terms of potential social impacts as well as technical merit and commercial viability. A sample scenario is presented within the paper to illustrate how the scenario planning methodology can be used. This scenario …

Using Acceptance And Commitment Training In The Support Of Parents Of Children Diagnosed With Autism, John T. Blackledge, Steven Hayes Jan 2006

Using Acceptance And Commitment Training In The Support Of Parents Of Children Diagnosed With Autism, John T. Blackledge, Steven Hayes

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Parents of autistic children face enormous challenges, but very little attention has been paid to their psychological needs. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has previously been tested with parents as part of a comprehensive package, but not yet alone. The present study used a within-subject, repeated measures design to test the effects of a 2-day (14 hour) group ACT workshop on 20 normal parents/guardians of children diagnosed with autism. Parents were assessed three weeks before the workshop, one week before, one week after, and three months after. No significant change occurred while waiting for treatment, but pre to post improvements …

Implementation Of An Integrated Accounting And Cost Management System Using Sap System: A Field Study, Sudhir C. Lodh, Michael J. Gaffikin Jan 2006

Implementation Of An Integrated Accounting And Cost Management System Using Sap System: A Field Study, Sudhir C. Lodh, Michael J. Gaffikin

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Not only are in-depth (theoretically informed) longitudinal (reflexive) field studies few and far between, it has been argued in those studies that little is known about the design and implementation of accounting and information systems that operate in today's world-class organizations. Using such an approach this study seeks to illustrate and analyse the implementation processes of an integrated accounting and cost management system using the SAP system at a major steel producer in Australia. It is demonstrated that the technical design of the system is only a part of the implementation process. Keeping 'actor-networks' in line and managing change including …

Sampling Patchily Distributed Taxa: A Case Study Using Cost-Benefit Analyses For Sponges And Ascidians In Coastal Lakes Of New South Wales, Australia, P. B. Barnes, A. R. Davis, D. E. Roberts Jan 2006

Sampling Patchily Distributed Taxa: A Case Study Using Cost-Benefit Analyses For Sponges And Ascidians In Coastal Lakes Of New South Wales, Australia, P. B. Barnes, A. R. Davis, D. E. Roberts

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Estuaries worldwide are under increasing threat from human impacts. Because much of their fauna remains unstudied and in many cases undescribed, these systems present real challenges for effective management. In eastern Australia the study of estuarine fauna is often further complicated by its patchy distributions. This is particularly the case for assemblages of sessile invertebrates in coastal saline lakes. This study quantified distributions of sponges and ascidians at a hierarchy of spatial scales in the seagrass meadows of 2 coastal saline lakes in New South Wales, Australia. Nine species of sponge, many of which were undescribed, and 3 species of …

Detection Of Moisture Stress In Eucalyptus Camaldulensis Using Leaf-Level Spectral Reflectance: Implications For Remote Sensing, Laurie A. Chisholm Jan 2006

Detection Of Moisture Stress In Eucalyptus Camaldulensis Using Leaf-Level Spectral Reflectance: Implications For Remote Sensing, Laurie A. Chisholm

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Foliage moisture stress may be detectable by remote sensing using high resolution spectral data, but meaningful diagnosis requires that plant water status be assessed on the ground under controlled conditions. Design parameters of an experimental plantation of E. camaldulensis (River red gum), were used to examine tree-level responses to moisture stress, as measured by xylem water potential, and relationships to physiological parameters including spectral reflectance, chlorophyll flurescence, and cholorphyll across a range of stress categories.

Simulation Of Travelling Wave Dielectrophoresis Using A Meshless Method, Dafeng Chen, Hejun Du, Weihua Li, Chang Shu

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Manipulation and separation of micron-sized particles, particularly biological particles, using the dielectrophoretic effect is an emerging application in BioMEMS technology. This paper presents a numerical simulation for the four-phase traveling dielectrophoresis (DEP) using a novel meshless method - weighted least square finite difference (LSFD) scheme. The exact boundary condition and nonuniform point distribution were used in the calculation. Numerical results including the electrical potential, electrical field, traveling wave DEP forces and particle behavior are presented. Although the LSFD scheme was originally proposed in solving incompressible viscous flow, it is further demonstrated in this paper that the method is also well …

Fitness Evaluation For Structural Optimisation Genetic Algorithms Using Neural Networks, Koren Ward, Timothy J. Mccarthy Jan 2006

Fitness Evaluation For Structural Optimisation Genetic Algorithms Using Neural Networks, Koren Ward, Timothy J. Mccarthy

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper relates to the optimisation of structural design using Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and presents an improved method for determining the fitness of genetic codes that represent possible design solutions by using a neural network to generalize fitness. Two problems that often impede design optimization using genetic algorithms are expensive fitness evaluation and high epistasis. In this paper we show that by using a neural network as a fitness approximator, optimal solutions to certain design problems can be achieved in significantly less generations and with considerably less fitness evaluations.

Analyzing Harmonic Monitoring Data Using Data Mining, Ali Asheibi, David A. Stirling, Danny Sutanto Jan 2006

Analyzing Harmonic Monitoring Data Using Data Mining, Ali Asheibi, David A. Stirling, Danny Sutanto

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Harmonic monitoring has become an important tool for harmonic management in distribution systems. A comprehensive harmonic monitoring program has been designed and implemented on a typical electrical MV distribution system in Australia. The monitoring program involved measurements of the three-phase harmonic currents and voltages from the residential, commercial and industrial load sectors. Data over a three year period has been downloaded and available for analysis. The large amount of acquired data makes it difficult to identify operational events that impact significantly on the harmonics generated on the system. More sophisticated analysis methods are required to automatically determine which part of …

Understanding Travel Behavior Using Demographic And Socioeconomic Variables As Travel Constraints, Uraiporn Kattiyapornpong Jan 2006

Understanding Travel Behavior Using Demographic And Socioeconomic Variables As Travel Constraints, Uraiporn Kattiyapornpong

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Samdahl and Jekubovich (1997) view constraints as a subset of reasons for not engaging in a particular behavior. There is limited empirical research on the role of demographic and socioeconomic variables as travel constraints. This study investigates the relationships between a wide range of short and long trip planning and travel behaviors and sociodemographic constraints comprised of age, income and life cycle. This research uses data generated from a cross-sectional, self-completed survey on travel and tourism which was collected during 2003 and 2004 from 49,105 Australian respondents. This paper utilizes binomial regression to find that age, income and life stage have …

An Intelligent User Interface For Browsing And Search Mpeg-7 Images Using Concept Lattices, Jon R. Ducrou, Peter W. Eklund, T. Wilson Jan 2006

An Intelligent User Interface For Browsing And Search Mpeg-7 Images Using Concept Lattices, Jon R. Ducrou, Peter W. Eklund, T. Wilson

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents the evaluation of a design and architecture for browsing and searching MPEG-7 images. Our approach is novel in that it exploits concept lattices for the representation and navigation of image content. Several concept lattices provide the foundation for the system (called Image-Sleuth) each representing a different search context, one for image shape, another for color and luminance, and a third for semantic content. This division of information aids in the facilitation of image browsing based on a metadata ontology. The test collection used for our study is a sub-set of MPEG-7 images created from the popular The …

Overcoming Organisational Resistance To Using Wiki Technology For Knowledge Management, Charmaine C. Pfaff, Helen M. Hasan Jan 2006

Overcoming Organisational Resistance To Using Wiki Technology For Knowledge Management, Charmaine C. Pfaff, Helen M. Hasan

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Although Wikis emerged in the public domain more than a decade ago, a number of business organisations are now discovering the advantages of using Wiki technology to manage knowledge. However, there are many who are not convinced about the merits of this relatively new Wiki technology and are not yet prepared to risk its adoption because it exhibits many ideas that have yet to be tested and many issues that have yet to be resolved. This paper studies the merits of using a Wiki for knowledge management. While some cases of corporate adoption of Wiki technology have been reported, cases …

Investigation Of Large-Scale Washover Of A Small Barrier System On The Southeast Australian Coast Using Ground Penetrating Radar, Brian G. Jones, C Bristow, Adam D. Switzer Jan 2006

Investigation Of Large-Scale Washover Of A Small Barrier System On The Southeast Australian Coast Using Ground Penetrating Radar, Brian G. Jones, C Bristow, Adam D. Switzer

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Prehistoric depositional signatures for large-scale washover involving marine inundation events such as storm and tsunami have been the subject of considerable research over the last 15 years. Much of this research has focused on the identification of sand sheets in back-barrier environments as depositional records for extreme washover events. All these deposits must have a sediment source, and by their nature, the most likely source of sediment for washover into back-barrier environments is the barrier itself. This study identifies an erosional signature for large-scale washover from a small coastal barrier on the southeast Australian coast. A distinct lense of marine …

Discrete Cosine Transform Based Shift Estimation For Fringe Pattern Profilometry Using Generalized Analysis Model, Jose F. Chicharo, Jiangtao Xi, Yingsong Hu, Zongkai Yang, Enbang Li Jan 2006

Discrete Cosine Transform Based Shift Estimation For Fringe Pattern Profilometry Using Generalized Analysis Model, Jose F. Chicharo, Jiangtao Xi, Yingsong Hu, Zongkai Yang, Enbang Li

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents a new analysis algorithm to carry out profile measure- ment with low computational complexity and less noise-sensitivity. Firstly, a discrete cosine transform (DCT) based representation method is introduced to express the height distribution of the three-dimensional surface. Then, a novel shift estimation algorithm, called DCT based shift estimation (DCT-SE) is presented to reconstruct three-dimensional object surfaces by using the proposed expression and the generalized analysis model. The advantage of DCT-SE is that without loss of measurement precise it provides lower computational complexity to implement three-dimensional reconstruction from distorted fringe patterns and at the same time survives from …

Extraction And Transport Of Metal Ions And Small Organic Com#163s Using Polymer Inclusion Membranes (Pims), Long Nghiem, Patrick Mornane, Ian Potter, Jilska Perera, Robert Cattral, Spas Kolev Jan 2006

Extraction And Transport Of Metal Ions And Small Organic Com#163s Using Polymer Inclusion Membranes (Pims), Long Nghiem, Patrick Mornane, Ian Potter, Jilska Perera, Robert Cattral, Spas Kolev

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The stability of polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) relative to other liquid membranes is amongst the major reasons for the recent rejuvenation of interest in carrier-mediated transport for selective separation and recovery of metal ions as well as numerous organic solutes. This is reflected by an increasing number of PIM investigations reported in the literature over the last two decades. Given the outstanding performance of PIMs compared to other types of liquid membranes particularly in terms of membrane lifetime, it has been predicted that practical industrial applications of PIMs will be realized in the near future. This review provides a comprehensive …

Designing A Faecal Incontinence Instrument Using Survey Data, Janet E. Sansoni, Nicholas Marosszeky, Emily Sansoni, Graeme Hawthorne Jan 2006

Designing A Faecal Incontinence Instrument Using Survey Data, Janet E. Sansoni, Nicholas Marosszeky, Emily Sansoni, Graeme Hawthorne

Sydney Business School - Papers

The development of instruments for the measurement of faecal incontinence symptoms and quality of life impact is at an early stage in psychometric terms (Thomas et al., 2006). The absence of large scale studies and clinical data makes the selection of reliable and valid measures difficult. Issues surrounding the actual content of questionnaires and scoring systems are also hotly debated. Some of these issues include: What do you mean by the severity of symptoms (Flatus, Liquid, or Solid Stool)? How do you measure the frequency of symptoms? Do you include questions about the use of pads? Do you ask questions …
