Theatre in its most crude, poignant, and honest form exists as the unapologetic mirror of our world. It houses the piercing reflections of mankind's hope, fear, self-doubt, passion, joy, despair, brilliance, destitution, and desire. It becomes the image of all that man hopes to be, yearns to achieve, and knows he has destroyed. Angel Ganivet's La conquista del reino de Maya (1897, The Conquest of the Realm of Maya) elucidates the aggressive impulse embedded within modern self-consciousness, one that precipitates the need for journeys—linguistic and artistic, as well as authentically colonial—to either the "dark continent" or to the "heart of darkness" to find the irrational Other of the rational modern man. This impulse, however, is not only at the service of individual subjective experience, elevating the ego in relation to a declining awareness of objective or synchronous outside reality. This paper reports on an on-line simulation that we have developed to support our pre-service teacher education program. The purpose of this paper is three fold: first it reports on the need identified within the literature for pre-service teacher education to make stronger connections between the theory of their university experience with classroom reality; second it reports on the creation of a prototype version of simulation software (ClassSim) developed to engage pre-service teachers in decision-making processes within a virtual classroom environment; third it reports on our research where the software was used with a cohort of 186 pre-service teachers.

The zanryu fujin, (or stranded war wives) are former Japanese female emigrants to Manchuria who, for various reasons, remained in China at the end of World War Two. They were for a long time the forgotten members of Japan's imperialist past. The reasons why the women did not undergo repatriation during the years up to 1958, when large numbers of the former colonial emigrants returned to Japan, are varied, but in many cases, their 'Chinese' families played some part.
