Points of discussion include some of the basic principles of entrepreneurship such as risk, succession, and benefit to communities. Included is a focal discussion that reflects on past business models in comparison to newer possible models that detail the potential for extending the participation of family fishing business through innovation and diversity. A primary objective of this paper is to determine if alternate methods to govern a natural recourse are viable. This includes research of the effect of past, present, and …

11th Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference (2006)
I developed an Internet-based, planning and communication system for professional and private users to make plans for their lands, which is branded as LandHelp (www.LandHelp.info). The project was funded by grants from the Renewable Resources Extension Act, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Wildlife Habitat Management Institute, Colorado State Forest Service, United States Department of Agriculture, Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (USDA SARE) from the Western Region, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agro-forestry program with the NRCS. Currently, LandHelp contains links to 31 broad categories of information that then link to 2,613 more resources. Major topics include, but …

Current Status And 25 Year Trends For Soil Acidity, Fertility And Salinity In The Coastal Catchments Of The Peel-Harvey, Robert Summers, David Weaver
All other publications
The current status and trends of soil analyses in the coastal catchment of the Peel Harvey estuary were developed from historical soil data (1982 to 1991) combined with a renewed sampling to greater depth (1 m). This report encompasses the data collected from the first year of the project. Soil phosphorus content was found to be high but has dropped slightly since 1991. Soil pH is very low and is likely to be limiting production but have risen slightly since 1991. Soil potassium content is generally so low that it may be limiting production especially to the west of the …

New Orleans, The Chesapeake, And The Future Of Environmental Assessment: Overcoming The Natural Resources Law Of Unintended Consequences, Eric Ryan
University of Richmond Law Review
This article tells the stories of the disappearing wetlands ringing the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and the Chesapeake Bay of Virginia and Maryland, which are vanishing under different circumstances but bear the same message for environmental policy makers: more sophisticated natural resource planning is required to avoid the unanticipated consequences that can cause even wellintended policies to backfire. The stories suggest that a model of environmental assessment that better tracks the complex network characteristics of regional ecosystems would yield better long-term results, and this article proposes a network-based model that expands the lateral, temporal, and causal analysis of conventional environmental …

1. Introduction
The sequencing of nucleic acids and the subsequent analysis of their encoded the genes and proteins has revolutionized biological sciences and allowed for the determination of evolutionary origins and biochemical potential of organisms. While the technology to determine molecular sequence data has become extremely powerful in terms of both automation and thoughput, sequence analysis technology has lagged behind, unable to efficiently keep up with the vast amount of sequence data being generated both in individual labs and by researchers worldwide. The foundation of robust sequence analysis is dependent on the building and maintaining of project sequence databases (PSD) …

“Virtual Water”: A Modern Means Of Resolving Water Distribution Disputes Between Israel And The Palestinians, Maya Manna
Macro Center Working Papers
The notion of a water deficit in the Middle East is not a new occurrence. Many generations inhabiting the area have been fighting for control over rivers and lakes in order to gain a constant water supply, as well as an advantageous position over the neighboring countries. After 2000, water, like trees, became a special focus of conflict in the Intifada. The government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority have been involved in many negotiations and confrontations struggling to establish an equal water distribution throughout the region. However, due to the violent history of their relations, the compromise is yet …

Tidal Bores, Catastrophic Flooding In Bangladesh, And The Potential Usefulness Of Causeways, Priyanka Joseph
Macro Center Working Papers
Through discussion of the worldwide devastation that tidal bores can cause, author Priyanka Joseph, examines the causes and the possible solutions to prevent these destructive waves. The pros and cons of each solution (such as causeways, viaducts, and regulators) are debated as well as their effect on the surrounding areas and environment.
An Overview Of The Water Conditions In Palestinian Villages, Maya Manna
An Overview Of The Water Conditions In Palestinian Villages, Maya Manna
Macro Center Working Papers
The important priorities in the region are the management of water quality through conservation measures and the appropriate use of treated sewage water. However, no sewage water treatment plant exists to serve these communities. Another consideration must be given to food security that is not dependent on local water supplies but on access to world markets. Access to world markets is dependant on the presence of a stable economy and political condition, which is based on a healthy workforce and community. This presently absent, due to the low living conditions, most of which are directly related to the quality of …

Current Property Size Distribution Of Landholders In The Northam Advisory District, Jeff Russell
Current Property Size Distribution Of Landholders In The Northam Advisory District, Jeff Russell
Bulletins 4000 -
The reason for conducting this short study was to gain a better understanding of the property size distribution of landholdings that exists within the Northam Advisory District (NAD). There has been some deal of conjecture as to the extent of property size within the district upon which some basic assumptions are being made for the viability of farming / agricultural industries in the district.
This outline may help to give a greater accuracy of the nature of the clientele of the district in decision making processes for district extension management and on ground activities.

The Indigenous Challenge, Carlos Perafan, Dianna Moyer
Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports
In business circles, indigenous peoples in Latin America are perceived as an obstacle to oil and gas development. However, there is more than that to the story. Buying The Way To A Better Gulf Fishery: Buybacks For Hurricane Relief And Fisheries Rationalization In The Gulf Of Mexico, Michael Pappas
Buying The Way To A Better Gulf Fishery: Buybacks For Hurricane Relief And Fisheries Rationalization In The Gulf Of Mexico, Michael Pappas
Faculty Scholarship
Fishing stocks in the Gulf of Mexico have been dwindling for years, and in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the fishing industry has found itself in even deeper waters. But whle the two hurricanes caused massive damage to fishing fleets and infrastructrure, they may have also created an opporutnity for reform in the way Gulf fisheries are managed. In this Article Mike Pappas evaluates the use of a buyback program as a posssible solution. After examining the problmes of the Gulf fisheries both before and after the hurricanes, he looks at other buyback programs that have been successful …

Crystals And Mud In Nature, Richard J. Lazarus

Professor James Salzman has written a wonderful article, which promises an equally wonderful book. His article intelligently and thoughtfully examines the forces that compete, conflict, and combine in the creation of laws relating to drinking water. These include, of course, the physical characteristics of the resource itself and how the resource relates to essential biological needs of humankind. But as Professor Salzman demonstrates, the biological role is only one of several perspectives on drinking water relevant to the kind of legal rules that apply to it. The article describes drinking water as a cultural resource, a social resource, and an …
