Teaching Writing Through Peer Revising And Reviewing, Kristi Lundstrom
Teaching Writing Through Peer Revising And Reviewing, Kristi Lundstrom
Theses and Dissertations
Although peer review, in which students evaluate each others' papers, has been shown to be beneficial in many writing classrooms, the benefits of peer review to the reviewer, or the student giving the feedback, has not been thoroughly investigated in the field of second language (L2) writing. The purpose of this study is to determine which is more beneficial to improving student writing: receiving or giving peer feedback. The study was conducted at the English Language Center (ELC) at Brigham Young University (BYU). Ninety-one students in nine writing classes at two different proficiency levels, high beginning and high intermediate, participated …

Agencies Of Hegemonization And Global Social Control, Moustafa A Wahdan
Agencies Of Hegemonization And Global Social Control, Moustafa A Wahdan
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Globalization is just an Americanized new mode of western hegemonic imperialism that used to dominate not only the periphery's lands through armies but also and more essentially to control minds. However, the American Hegemonic brand is just continuing the mission of the earlier European and particularly British imperialism. Various agencies of socialization and social control are the most effective tools that usually yield great deal of power to whoever controls them. Using a lot of sources we portray how education- among various agencies of socialization and social control- was launched to produce generations of culturally defeated, mentally colonized and submissive …

When Is A War Not A War? The Myth Of The Global War On Terror, Mary Ellen O'Connell
ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law
The starting point of human rights law is the right of the individual, including the right not to be arbitrarily killed. The international law of armed conflict, which is very much older in its origins than human rights law, starts from totally different premises. The soldier has the right to kill another soldier

Effects Of Global Change On Mojave Desert Annual Plant Communities, Stacy Marie Irvin
Effects Of Global Change On Mojave Desert Annual Plant Communities, Stacy Marie Irvin
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The objective of this research was to investigate the potential effects of global change on Mojave Desert annual plant communities. The predicted changes of increased summer precipitation, increased nitrogen deposition, and biological soil crust disturbance were simulated in a full factorial design, and the effects on species composition, plant density, plant size, and nitrogen content were measured. Added summer rain decreased community-level biomass and diversity the following spring, while increased nitrogen deposition and biological soil crust disturbance increased community-level biomass and diversity. However, biomass responses at the species level were highly variable and individualistic, consistent with the episodic nature of …
Forecasting Stability Levels For The Countries Of The Former Soviet Union, Margaret Erin Keck
Forecasting Stability Levels For The Countries Of The Former Soviet Union, Margaret Erin Keck
Theses and Dissertations
United States intelligence officers and policymakers need reliable forecasts of country, regional, and global stability or instability. Such forecasts require a methodology for identifying and analyzing factors that contribute to stability. The anticipation of this stability level can facilitate crisis warning and diplomatic strategies for various timelines, including five, ten, and twenty year forecasts. While the problem of forecasting can be tackled in various ways, in the interest of time and space, I will only go into a few of them. The approach I will use is multiple linear regression to generate a short-term forecast for the stability levels of …
Determining Information Requirements For E-Business Systems From Activity Space To Information Space, Kecheng Liu, Lily Sun
Determining Information Requirements For E-Business Systems From Activity Space To Information Space, Kecheng Liu, Lily Sun
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
The study of information requirements for e-business systems reveals that the level of detail, granularity, format of presentation, and a broad range of information types are required for the applications. The provision of relevant information affects how e-business systems can efficiently support the business goals and processes. This paper presents an approach for determining information requirements for e-business systems (DIRES) which will allow the user to describe the core business processes, whose specification maps onto a business activity space. It further aids a configuration of information requirements into an information space. A case study of a logistics company in China …

A Framework For Agents Conducting E-Business In A Supply Chain, C.W. Leung, T.N. Wong, Domenic Sculli
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper describes the development of an agent-based framework that supports the purchasing function in supply chain management. The framework has been applied in a case situation for planned order releasing from a manufacturer’s materials requirement planning (MRP) system. The proposed framework incorporates a negotiation protocol that can effectively coordinate the negotiation process between a buyer agent and several supply agents, which may represent the manufacturer and its suppliers respectively. These agents negotiate according to their preferred strategies which aim to conclude a deal that achieves their own objectives. The implementation of the negotiation process involves considerations of the price …
Development Of A Risk Assessment Model For Global Information Technology Outsourcing, June Wei, Brian Peach
Development Of A Risk Assessment Model For Global Information Technology Outsourcing, June Wei, Brian Peach
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Global Information Technology (IT) outsourcing has been recognized to have important potential benefits. However, researchers and practitioners also recognize potential risks involved in global IT outsourcing, which sometimes lead to undesirable consequences. This paper develops a model to assess risks in global IT outsourcing. Specifically, this paper begins by identifying global IT outsourcing risk factors by considering the national infrastructure, organizational infrastructure, and project environment. Second, a Global IT Outsourcing (GITO) engagement model for risk assessment is developed to logically link all these risk factors together. Third, one quantifiable approach based on a relative-weighted assessment model is presented to demonstrate …

Working With Global English: The Experience Of English Language Teachers In A University Language College, Peter Kell, Gillian Vogl
Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)
Through in-depth interviews and focus groups with English Language teachers employed at a university bridging college, this paper explores the challenges that teachers face in preparing international students for university life in Australia. Findings from this research suggest that the narrow business focused objectives of the English Language market undermine more holistic approaches to teaching English. A more holistic approach is required to respond to the social and cultural needs of students while they are studying in Australia. Nevertheless, this research suggests that regardless of the instrumental and reductionist neo liberal philosophy which informs these programs, meaningful intercultural dialogue, critical …
