Do Investors Herd Intraday In Australian Equities?, Julia Henker, Thomas Henker, Anna Mitsios Jul 2014

Do Investors Herd Intraday In Australian Equities?, Julia Henker, Thomas Henker, Anna Mitsios

Thomas Henker

Purpose – The purpose of this research is to consider whether market wide herding occurs intraday.

Design/methodology/approach – Using the 1995 Christie and Huang and the 2000 Chang et al. models, the paper tests whether market wide and industry sector herding occurs intraday in the Australian equities market.

Findings – Neither market wide nor industry sector herding occurs intraday.

Research limitations/implications – Both herding measures focus on one specific type of herding, herding evidenced by changes in the cross-sectional return distribution. Therefore the herding measures are ill suited to capture the effects of period specific abnormally high or low market …

Malaysia In The Global Economy: Crisis, Recovery, And The Road Ahead, Daniel E. Charette Oct 2006

Malaysia In The Global Economy: Crisis, Recovery, And The Road Ahead, Daniel E. Charette

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article offers an analysis of contemporary economic development in Malaysia, focusing especially on the causes and consequences of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Malaysia offers an excellent case study in international development due to its role as an export-dependent developing country with a high degree of integration in the global economy. In attempting to determine why Malaysia was enveloped by a financial crisis in July of 1997, a two-level political economy approach is used to separate international policy influences from domestic influences. My findings suggest that a combination of ill-advised, full capital account liberalization (Washington Consensus / international influence) …

Still The Wild West? A 10-Year Look At Campaign Finance Reform In Illinois, Ed Wojcicki Sep 2006

Still The Wild West? A 10-Year Look At Campaign Finance Reform In Illinois, Ed Wojcicki

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

Kent Redfield used to tell a great story while on the speaking circuit in 1996. To describe a weakness in Illinois’ campaign finance laws, he explained that if a terrorist organization filed a routine semiannual report with the Illinois State Board of Elections and declared its purpose to be the assassination of public officials, the elections board’s only role would be to make certain that the group had filed the paperwork properly. That’s because the board had no authority to begin an investigation or to question what was in a candidate’s reports. Illinois laws regarding campaign finance disclosure had no …

The Macroeconomic News Cycle And Uncertainty Resolution, Arjun Chatrath, Rohan Christie-David, William T. Moore Sep 2006

The Macroeconomic News Cycle And Uncertainty Resolution, Arjun Chatrath, Rohan Christie-David, William T. Moore

Faculty Publications

We examine the behavior of return volatility and trading at 5-minute intervals in the treasury bond futures market in the context of the monthly macroeconomic news cycle. We advance and confirm the hypothesis that volatility and trading activity are higher in the first half of the month. The data indicate that these patterns arise from at least two sources: (1) a higher level of uncertainty regarding the value of news in announcements in the first half of the month, and (2) improvement in efficiency of macroeconomic forecasts from the first to the second half of the month.

Transition Economies: A Look At Russia, Ukraine And Poland, Andrey Androshchuk Aug 2006

Transition Economies: A Look At Russia, Ukraine And Poland, Andrey Androshchuk

Honors College Theses

The following paper examines transition economies of Russia, Ukraine and Poland. It takes a look at their transition period into a market economy for the period between 1989 and 1997. It looks at the initial transformation policiies implemented by these countries. The effects of these policies determined the recovery of each nation. Poland was able to implement broad reforms on the macro and micro level and as a result had a small contraction period which was followed by a rapid recovery. Russia and Ukraine failed to fully implement its reforms and as a result suffered economic downturn throughout this period. …

Obstacles To Total Economic Integration In Regional Trade Blocs: The Case Of Mercosur, Jaissy A. Lorenzo Aug 2006

Obstacles To Total Economic Integration In Regional Trade Blocs: The Case Of Mercosur, Jaissy A. Lorenzo

Honors College Theses

This paper aims to explore the lack of institutional and macreconomic coordination among Mercosur's members and its effects on Mercosur's primary goal to successfully achieve economic integration in the region. Using the framework presented by Dorruci, Firpo, Fratzscher and Mongelli (2002), who argue that this lack of coordination has been Mercosur's most detrimental downfall, I show how this lack of institutional integration among Mercosur nations has inhibited further economic integration in this sector of Latin America.

Scientific Secrecy And “Spin”: The Sad, Sleazy Saga Of The Trials Of Remune, Susan Haack

Law and Contemporary Problems

Haack sketches an account of what science is and does that suggests how and why the ways in which scientific work is funded can distort or even block its progress. She puts her theory to work by analyzing the troubled history of the trials--clinical and legal--of Immune Response's AIDS drug, Remune.

The Determinants Of Executive Compensation In The Commercial Banking Industry, David A. Romer Jul 2006

The Determinants Of Executive Compensation In The Commercial Banking Industry, David A. Romer

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the viability of two basic theories of compensation to explain executive compensation in the banking industry. The two executive compensation motivation theories are sales/sales growth maximization and profit/shareholder wealth maximization. Overall, strong support is found for both theories. This research also seeks to significantly expand, compared to previous research, the number of banks investigated. This study succeeds, with over a four-fold increase in the number of banks analyzed, including over 330 banks not previously used in the literature. This investigation is further motivated by the paucity of banking studies on compensation …

Three Essays In Environmental Markets: Dynamic Behavior, Market Interactions, Policy Implications, Irene Margaret Xiarchos May 2006

Three Essays In Environmental Markets: Dynamic Behavior, Market Interactions, Policy Implications, Irene Margaret Xiarchos

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

In order to induce or support voluntary environmental behavior, the mechanisms of existing and possible environmental markets must be understood. This dissertation analyzes two issues related to voluntary environmental behavior: (i) The reactions of firms over the long term to stakeholder concerns about the environment (essay one). (ii) Interactions between recycled and primary markets for metals (essays two and three).;Although these essays consider different phenomena, they are underlain by common factors: the exploration of behavior in environmental markets, the importance of profit as a motivation for firms' actions, the centrality of the role of information, and the necessity to look …

Modeling And Simulation Of Value -At -Risk In The Financial Market Area, Xiangyin Zheng Apr 2006

Modeling And Simulation Of Value -At -Risk In The Financial Market Area, Xiangyin Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

Value-at-Risk (VaR) is a statistical approach to measure market risk. It is widely used by banks, securities firms, commodity and energy merchants, and other trading organizations. The main focus of this research is measuring and analyzing market risk by modeling and simulation of Value-at-Risk for portfolios in the financial market area. The objectives are (1) predicting possible future loss for a financial portfolio from VaR measurement, and (2) identifying how the distributions of the risk factors affect the distribution of the portfolio. Results from (1) and (2) provide valuable information for portfolio optimization and risk management.

The model systems chosen …

The Urban Unbanked In Mexico And The United States, John P. Caskey, C. Ruíz Durán, T. M. Solo Feb 2006

The Urban Unbanked In Mexico And The United States, John P. Caskey, C. Ruíz Durán, T. M. Solo

Economics Faculty Works

This paper examines the ways in which lower-income households obtain basic financial services in urban communities in Mexico and the United States. And it discusses the efforts that private sector and government organizations are making to lower the cost or improve the quality of those services. The paper summarizes available information on these issues and assesses the rationale and challenges facing the strategies that both countries are using to improve the financial services available to lower-income households, giving particular attention to "unbanked" households, meaning households that do not have deposit accounts with any regulated deposit-taking institution, and also to lower-income …
