Software And Internet Industry Workers: Implications For The Future Of Work In Massachusetts, Sarah Kuhn, Paula Raymann

New England Journal of Public Policy

Those at the leading edge of the new economy — workers in software and Internet workplaces — can tell us something about the future of work in our new world. The authors have conducted a National Science Foundation-funded study of women and men working in IT. They find that while pay and the opportunity to do interesting work are major attractions, challenges facing this workforce include stress, difficulties balancing work and family, and concerns about employment security. While women and men reported similar attitudes and experiences in many areas, in others there were still significant differences.

Malaysia In The Global Economy: Crisis, Recovery, And The Road Ahead, Daniel E. Charette Oct 2006

Malaysia In The Global Economy: Crisis, Recovery, And The Road Ahead, Daniel E. Charette

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article offers an analysis of contemporary economic development in Malaysia, focusing especially on the causes and consequences of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Malaysia offers an excellent case study in international development due to its role as an export-dependent developing country with a high degree of integration in the global economy. In attempting to determine why Malaysia was enveloped by a financial crisis in July of 1997, a two-level political economy approach is used to separate international policy influences from domestic influences. My findings suggest that a combination of ill-advised, full capital account liberalization (Washington Consensus / international influence) …

Center for Small Towns

In 2004 the West Central Initiative began developing a Family Economic Success framework based on three key issues of: Earn it, Keep it, Grow it. The goal of this approach was to help low-income families build strong financial futures. In 2006 the Center for Small Towns was approached by the West Central Initiative to provide needed baseline analysis for the Family Economic Success framework they began developing in 2004. This study was developed and intended to provide a baseline of valid data from which to measure progress, and answer the question, are the low-income households able to maintain, and grow …

Outsourcing In Ireland: A Literature Review, Survey And Case Study Perspective, Edward Sweeney, Aoife O'Riordan

Conference papers

This paper investigates what is happening in Ireland at the moment regards outsourcing. It
looks into the literature review and the survey conducted. The research took place over a period
of two years, initially as a literature review, and then the survey was conducted through the
mediums of e-mail and the postal service. The survey analysis found that Ireland was the most
likely place for Irish companies to outsource to, and that nearly 40 percent of the companies that
have been surveyed have started on their latest outsourcing initiative since 2004. This indicates
that outsourcing is still important on the …

Money Talks: The Influence Of Economic Power On The Employment Laws And Policies In The United States And France, Carole A. Scott May 2006

Money Talks: The Influence Of Economic Power On The Employment Laws And Policies In The United States And France, Carole A. Scott

San Diego International Law Journal

Money talks. Money changes everything. There is nothing money cannot buy. These are all familiar phrases used to describe the desirable, and undesirable, effects of money. Money can also mean power, and more specifically, economic power. Indeed, economic power is becoming an increasingly important concept for a wide range of academic disciplines. For example, the concept of economic power has heavily influenced a new theory of international relations, namely globalization. Many globalization theorists argue that economic power is replacing military power in global politics. Other scholars contend that globalization is creating a new world order where economics are the central …

Political Economy Of Foreign Policy Change: Understanding The Change In The Mozambican Foreign Policy During The 80s, Sergio Mateus Gomes Feb 2006

Political Economy Of Foreign Policy Change: Understanding The Change In The Mozambican Foreign Policy During The 80s, Sergio Mateus Gomes

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This study aims to understand the process of foreign policy change that occurred m Mozambique during the mid 80s. Most of the few studies of foreign policy devoted to developing countries have based their explanation of developing countries foreign policy on static analysis and the primacy of the psychological approach. However, the case of Mozambique suggests us that decision for foreign policy change was conditioned by a combination of domestic and external factors. In fact, although the leader was insulated vis-a-vis the society, the external and domestic environments made him to take decisions that were contrary to his basic views …

An Exploration Of Structural, Cultural And Institutional Factors Behind The Japanese Recession, 1990-2000, Yasmin Ahmed Mowafy Feb 2006

An Exploration Of Structural, Cultural And Institutional Factors Behind The Japanese Recession, 1990-2000, Yasmin Ahmed Mowafy

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This paper analyses the causes behind the Japanese economic downturn which started in the 1990s and investigates the failure of both fiscal and monetary policy to remedy the recession. The author asserts that the Japanese economy was due for recession when two factors occurred to precipitate it, the asset price bubble and the banking crisis. However, a recession would have occurred even if these events had not transpired, because of a number of structural factors. The recession was then prolonged by the existence of the "liquidity trap". The inevitability of the recession stems from the fact that the Japanese economy …

Forecasting Stability Levels For The Countries Of The Former Soviet Union, Margaret Erin Keck Jan 2006

Forecasting Stability Levels For The Countries Of The Former Soviet Union, Margaret Erin Keck

Theses and Dissertations

United States intelligence officers and policymakers need reliable forecasts of country, regional, and global stability or instability. Such forecasts require a methodology for identifying and analyzing factors that contribute to stability. The anticipation of this stability level can facilitate crisis warning and diplomatic strategies for various timelines, including five, ten, and twenty year forecasts. While the problem of forecasting can be tackled in various ways, in the interest of time and space, I will only go into a few of them. The approach I will use is multiple linear regression to generate a short-term forecast for the stability levels of …

Identifying Structural Breaks In The Lebanese Economy 1970-2003: An Application Of The Zivot And Andrews Test, Charles Harvie, Mosayeb Pahlavani, Ali S. Saleh Jan 2006

Identifying Structural Breaks In The Lebanese Economy 1970-2003: An Application Of The Zivot And Andrews Test, Charles Harvie, Mosayeb Pahlavani, Ali S. Saleh

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

During the 1960s and early 1970s the Lebanese economy was characterized by low inflation, high growth, sizeable balance of payments surpluses and small public sector deficits, which made it a highly attractive business centre. During this period the country was described as the Switzerland or Paris of the East. This macroeconomic stability did not last long, however, as the economy subsequently underwent fundamental structural changes during most years after the mid 1970s. The aim of this paper is to identify the timing of major structural breaks in the Lebanese economy by applying the Zivot and Andrews (ZA) (1992) procedure, using …

Testing For Structural Breaks In The Korean Economy 1980-2005: An Application Of The Innovational Outlier And Additive Outlier Models, Charles Harvie, Mosayeb Pahlavani Jan 2006

Testing For Structural Breaks In The Korean Economy 1980-2005: An Application Of The Innovational Outlier And Additive Outlier Models, Charles Harvie, Mosayeb Pahlavani

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper employs quarterly time series data to endogenously determine the timing of structural breaks for various macroeconomic variables in the Korean economy. The Innovational Outlier (IO) as well as Additive Outlier models (Perron, 1997) are then used to test for non-stationarity of the Korean macroeconomic data. After accounting for the single most significant structural break the results from the (AO) model clearly indicate that the null o f a unit root cannot be rejected for all of the series under investigation. This finding is consistent with our finding based on the conventional unit root test. However, by applying the …

Tacit Assumptions In The Analysis Of A Creative Economy, Dr. Eduardo Pol

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The formal models of a creative economy revolve around these tacit assumptions: (1) all innovations are equally important for economic growth (equipollent innovation); (2) all innovations occur in one sector only (confined innovation); and (3) there are no innovatory discontinuities ( unruffled innovation).

Sydney's Creative Economy: Social And Spatial Challenges, Christopher R. Gibson Jan 2006

Sydney's Creative Economy: Social And Spatial Challenges, Christopher R. Gibson

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The recent popularity of Richard Florida's work on the rise of the 'creative class' invites attention not only on the size and impact of the creative economy in Australia, but on its geography as well." At the core of Florida's approach is the premise that places compete with each other for a new kind of economic development, fuelled not by the availability of raw materials, cheap labour, or state investment in infrastructure, but by the decisions of producers in creative industries such as film, music, design and advertising to live and work in particular localities. Such creative producers constitute a …
