This project completed in the fall semester 2006 is concerning the current economic situation of the artisan fishermen in the V Region of Chile focusing on the experience of the caleta en El Quisco, Chile. This study explores the Mapuche political movement in Chile since the military dictatorship. It asserts that the movement is more divided and weak presently than it was during the dictatorship because at that time all sectors of the Mapuche society were able to unite in order to fight against a common and concrete enemy. Chilean democracy, for more than sixteen years, has been on a steady path of democratic consolidation. A problem that remains, however, is the profound inability of societal actors to affect change within the new democratic framework. Participation in groups of collective action is exceptionally low and the country has suffered a crisis of social capital en the last ten years.

Copper mining is a key activity of the Chilean economy that traditionally has remained within the masculine domain. This paper, written in the first months of Chile’s first female president’s term, investigates whether women’s political inroads have translated into greater economic opportunity in the mining industry. Through interviews and a questionnaire circulated in two copper mines, one public and one private, the paper evaluates women’s perceptions of their opportunities for professional advancement, their educational opportunities, and how they feel in their work environment.
