Construction of biomotors is an exciting area of scientific research that holds great promise for the development of new technologies with broad potential applications in areas such as the energy industry and medicine. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of prealigned microarrays of motile Escherichia coli bacterial cells on SiOx substrates. To prepare these arrays, holed surfaces with a gold layer on the bottom of the holes were utilized. The attachment of bacteria to the holes was achieved via nonspecific interactions using poly-l-lysine hydrobromide (PLL). Our data suggest that a single motile bacterial cell can be selectively attached to an individual …

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is known to subserve working memory (WM) processes. Brain imaging studies of WM using delayed response tasks (DRTs) have shown memory-load-dependent activation increases in dorsal prefrontal cortex (PFC) regions. These activation increases are believed to reflect manipulation of to-be-remembered information in the service of memory-consolidation. This speculation has been based on observations of similar activation increases in tasks that overtly require manipulation by instructing participants to reorder to-be-remembered list items. In this study, we tested the assumption of functional equivalence between these two types of WM tasks. Participants performed a DRT under two conditions with memory …

Inter-Turn Fault Diagnosis In Induction Motors Using The Pendulous Oscillation Phenomenon, Behrooz Mirafzal, Richard J. Povinelli, Nabeel Demerdash
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A robust interturn fault diagnostic approach based on the concept of magnetic field pendulous oscillation, which occurs in induction motors under faulty conditions, is introduced in this paper. This approach enables one to distinguish and classify an unbalanced voltage power supply and machine manufacturing/construction imperfections from an interturn fault. The experimental results for the two case studies of a set of 5-hp and 2-hp induction motors verify the validity of the proposed approach. Moreover, it can be concluded from the experimental results that if the circulating current level in the shorted loop increases beyond the phase current level, an interturn …

Methionine aminopeptidase (MAP) is a ubiquitous, essential enzyme involved in protein N-terminal methionine excision. According to the generally accepted cleavage rules for MAP, this enzyme cleaves all proteins with small side chains on the residue in the second position (P1′), but many exceptions are known. The substrate specificity of Escherichia coli MAP1 was studied in vitro with a large (>120) coherent array of peptides mimicking the natural substrates and kinetically analyzed in detail. Peptides with Val or Thr at P1′ were much less efficiently cleaved than those with Ala, Cys, Gly, Pro, or Ser in this position. Certain residues …

This report presents a case of severe intrusive luxation of mature maxillary lateral incisor in a 10-year-old boy. The intruded tooth was immediately repositioned (surgical extrusion) and splinted within 2 h following injury. Tetracycline therapy was initiated at the time of repositioning and maintained for 10 days. Pulp removal and calcium hydroxide treatment of the root canal was carried out after repositioning. Splint was removed 1 month later. Definitive root canal treatment with gutta percha was accomplished at the second month recall. Clinical and radiographic examination 28 months after the surgical extrusion revealed satisfactory apical and periodontal healing.

The Landsberg erecta (Ler) accession of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) has a weak allele of the floral inhibitor FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). FLC-Ler is weakly up-regulated by the active San Feliu-2 (Sf2) allele of FRIGIDA (FRI-Sf2), resulting in a moderately late-flowering phenotype. By contrast, the Columbia (Col) allele of FLC is strongly up-regulated by FRI-Sf2, resulting in a very late-flowering phenotype. In Col, the FRI-related gene FRI LIKE 1 (FRL1) is required for FRI-mediated upregulation of FLC. It is shown here that in Ler …

The Distribution Of Lianas And Their Change In Abundance In Temperate Forests Over The Past 45 Years, Ronald A. Londre, Stefan A. Schnitzer
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Lianas (woody vines) are an important and dynamic component of many forests throughout the world, and increases in CO2, mean winter temperature, and forest fragmentation may promote their growth and proliferation in temperate forests. In this study, we used a 45‐year data set to test the hypothesis that lianas have increased in abundance and basal area in the interiors of 14 deciduous temperate forests in Wisconsin (USA) since 1959. We also censused woody plants along a gradient from the forest edge to the interior in seven of these forests to test the hypothesis that the abundance of lianas …
Normative Perspectives For Ethical And Socially Responsible Marketing, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick Murphy
Normative Perspectives For Ethical And Socially Responsible Marketing, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick Murphy
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
This article presents a normative set of recommendations for elevating the practice of marketing ethics. The approach is grounded in seven essential perspectives involving multiple aspirational dimensions implicit in ethical marketing. More important, each basic perspective (BP), while singularly useful, is also integrated with the other observations as well as grounded in the extant ethics literature. This combination of BPs, adhering to the tenets of normative theory postulation, generates a connective, holistic approach that addresses some of the major factors marketing managers should consider if they desire to conduct their marketing campaigns with the highest levels of ethics and social …
Openness, Income-Tax Progressivity, And Inflation, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose
Openness, Income-Tax Progressivity, And Inflation, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This paper considers a model of an open economy in which the degree of income-tax progressivity influences the interaction among openness, central bank independence, and the inflation rate. Our model suggests that an increase in the progressivity of the tax system induces a smaller response in real output to a change in the price level. This implies that increased income-tax progressivity reduces the equilibrium inflation rate and that the effect of increased income-tax progressivity on inflation is smaller when the central bank places a higher weight on inflation or when there is greater openness. Examination of cross-country inflation data provides …

Distensibility Differs Between Sall Arteries And Veins In The Newborn Piglet Lung, John B. Gordon, Steven Thomas Haworth, Robert C. Molthen, Gary S. Krenz, Anne V. Clough
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
BACKGROUND: We previously used micro-CT techniques to measure pulmonary artery distensibility in 3 week old piglets. Pressure/diameter relationships were measured for each artery and the slope (a) was then plotted against its diameter intercept at 0 pressure (Do). The resultant diameter independent distensibility parameter, a, was estimated by linear regression to be 1.6% per mmHg for arteries between 0.2 and 3.0 mm Do.
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether; 1) distensibility of smaller arteries was similar to that of arteries with Do> 0.2 mm; and 2) whether small vein and artery distensibility was similar.
DESIGN/METHODS: Lower lobes were isolated …

Psychometric Properties Of The Readiness For Hospital Discharge Scale, Marianne Weiss, Linda Piacentine
Psychometric Properties Of The Readiness For Hospital Discharge Scale, Marianne Weiss, Linda Piacentine
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of the study was to assess the psychometrics properties of the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS), a 23-item instrument that measures patients' perception of readiness for discharge. Data were obtained from 356 respondents from two urban tertiary medical centers (adult and children's) in the midwestern United States who were participants in a larger study of predictors and outcomes of readiness for hospital discharge. Confirmatory factor analysis, contrasted group comparisons, and predictive validity testing supported the 4-factor structure and construct validity of the instrument. Following deletion of two poorly performing items, Cronbach's alpha for the revised 21item scale …

Patient safety is a relatively new field, with many opinions and few effectively proven approaches. One factor is clear: optimal patient safety outcomes cannot be achieved in isolation. Although it is well recognized that multidisciplinary collaboration in the healthcare setting is necessary to effect patient safety, collaboration with resources external to healthcare-academia and industry in particular-will not only aid but also quicken the patient safety efforts. The authors outline a healthcare system's use of all available resources to build a patient safety program.
Integrative Motivation As A Predictor Of Success In The Intermediate Foreign Language Classroom, Todd A. Hernandez
Integrative Motivation As A Predictor Of Success In The Intermediate Foreign Language Classroom, Todd A. Hernandez
Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications
This study investigates the ability of three variables—integrative motivation, instrumental motivation, and the need to fulfill a university foreign language requirement—to predict: (1) scores on a simulated oral proficiency interview (SOPI) and (2) the desire to enroll in a foreign language after fulfilling the language requirement. Analysis of data from a questionnaire and a SOPI administered to 130 students completing their fourth‐semester Spanish course identified integrative motivation as a significant predictor of both SOPI scores and students' desire to continue studying Spanish beyond the four‐semester foreign language requirement. A negative relationship was also found between the need to fulfill the …
Openness, The Sacrifice Ratio, And Inflation: Is There A Puzzle?, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose
Openness, The Sacrifice Ratio, And Inflation: Is There A Puzzle?, Joseph P. Daniels, David D. Vanhoose
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The standard time-inconsistency-based explanation for the negative correlation between openness and inflation requires an inverse relationship between the sacrifice ratio and openness, but Daniels et al. (2005, Openness, central bank independence, and the sacrifice ratio. Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking 37 (2), 371–379.) have provided evidence that controlling for central bank independence reveals a positive relationship. This paper embeds the time-inconsistency approach within a model of a multisector, imperfectly competitive, open economy. In this setting, greater openness raises the sacrifice ratio but reduces the inflation bias. Thus, failure to observe an inverse relationship between openness and the sacrifice ratio …
Openness, Centralized Wage Bargaining, And Inflation, Joseph P. Daniels, Farrokh Nourzad, David D. Vanhoose
Openness, Centralized Wage Bargaining, And Inflation, Joseph P. Daniels, Farrokh Nourzad, David D. Vanhoose
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This paper develops a model of an open economy containing both sectors in which wages are market-determined and sectors with wage-setting arrangements. A portion of the latter group of sectors coordinate their wages, taking into account that their collective actions influence the equilibrium inflation outcome in an environment in which the central bank engages in discretionary monetary policymaking. Key predictions forthcoming from this model are (1) increased centralization of wage setting initially causes inflation to increase at low degrees of wage centralization but then, as wage centralization increases, results in an inflation drop-off; (2) a greater degree of centralized wage …

Styrenic Polymer Nanocomposites Based On An Oligomerically-Modified Clay With High Inorganic Content, Jinguo Zhang, David D. Jiang, Dongyan Wang, Charles A. Wilkie
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Clay was modified with an oligomeric surfactant containing styrene and lauryl acrylate units along with a small amount of vinylbenzyl chloride to permit the formation of an ammonium salt so that this can be attached to a clay. The oligomerically-modified clay contains 50% inorganic clay, and styrenic polymer nanocomposites, including those of polystyrene (PS), high-impact polystyrene (HIPS), styrene–acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) and acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS), were prepared by melt blending. The morphologies of the nanocomposites were evaluated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Mixed intercalated/delaminated nanocomposites were formed for SAN and ABS while largely immiscible nanocomposites were formed for PS and …

Buccal And Palatal Talon Cusps With Pulp Extensions On A Supernumerary Primary Tooth, Esin Siraci, H. Cem Güngör, Zafer C. Cehreli, B. Taner
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
This paper reports an unusual occurrence of talon cusp on a supernumerary primary incisor, presenting on both labial and palatal sides. The tooth was scheduled for extraction due to its interference with the occlusion. Morphometric analysis of the taloned cusps was performed on digitized replicas of the tooth crown using open-source image analysis toolkit (ImageJ). Further non-destructive investigation of the taloned crown under cone-beam X-ray computed tomography revealed pulpal extensions in both talon cusps.
