Vat? A Look Inside Canada's Experience With The Goods And Services Tax, Brandon A. Ketterman Nov 2006

Vat? A Look Inside Canada's Experience With The Goods And Services Tax, Brandon A. Ketterman

San Diego International Law Journal

Consumption taxes have been and continue to be utilized as a staple revenue producer within systems of taxation. The value-added tax (VAT) is one form of consumption tax that has grown in popularity among nations over the last several decades. In fact, after the passage of a goods and services tax (one type of VAT) in Australia in 2000, the United States now stands alone as the only remaining OECD nation, among its 30 members, without some form of a value-added tax on consumption. As the massive topic of tax reform continually appears at the forefront of the political landscape, …

A Clearing In The Forest: Infusing The Labor Union Dues Dispute With First Amendment Values, Harry G. Hutchinson Apr 2006

A Clearing In The Forest: Infusing The Labor Union Dues Dispute With First Amendment Values, Harry G. Hutchinson

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

This article deploys public choice theory and postmodem identity claims to develop a far-reaching understanding of the union dues dispute, which suggests that the burden of proof on the existence of and/or the possibility of an enduring union community should be placed on proponents of this view. While the postmodern project can be seen as an unsettled approach that is riven by coherency issues, not the least, its insistence on offering the good without the true, it supplies modest benefits by revealing the conceivably infinite varieties of human preferences in contemporary America. The absence of preference convergence, understood from the …

The Effect Of Oil Prices On Exchange Rates: A Case Study Of The Dominican Republic, Jennifer Dawson '06 Apr 2006

The Effect Of Oil Prices On Exchange Rates: A Case Study Of The Dominican Republic, Jennifer Dawson '06

The Park Place Economist

O&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; of the trade balance for energy-dependant economies. In the case of small open &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; &#;&#;&#;&#;&#; &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; &#;&#;&#;&#; variability in oil prices is expected to have a large impact on the relative value of the currency. This relationship between the price of oil and the exchange rate has been established by the literature for oil-producing countries but not for oil-importing countries. This paper uses the case of the Dominican Republic, an energy dependent small open economy with a floating exchange rate, to illustrate this connection.

High School Dropout Determinants: The Effect Of Poverty And Learning Disabilities, Adrienne Ingrum '06 Apr 2006

High School Dropout Determinants: The Effect Of Poverty And Learning Disabilities, Adrienne Ingrum '06

The Park Place Economist

Numerous studies have found determinants of high school completion; most studies focus on socioeconomic and academic performance factors. This research aims to study the impact of socioeconomic status and learning disabilities, specifically the impact that socioeconomic status has on the prevalence of learning disabilities, and then the impact learning disabilities has on high school completion. Moreover, this study aims to determine if an interaction between these two factors exists, thereby causing an increased disadvantage of attaining a high school education for these students possessing both of these characteristics. Additionally, this study will show the effectiveness of the current efforts towards …

Implications Of Same-Sex Couples Being Denied The Right To Marriage: A Look At Federal Income Tax Structure And Social Security Benefits, Adam M. Gray '06 Apr 2006

Implications Of Same-Sex Couples Being Denied The Right To Marriage: A Look At Federal Income Tax Structure And Social Security Benefits, Adam M. Gray '06

The Park Place Economist

Much recent news has focused on promoting traditional lifestyles and banning or discouraging all others. However, an overview of society shows that the proportion of traditional families are becoming fewer and fewer. These traditional families are those consisting of one man and one woman living together with the possibility of children, either biological or adopted. Non-traditional families include divorced families, single-parent families, opposite-sex partners, and same-sex partners. The US government legally recognizes one type of family: opposite-sex, married partners. This recognition provides tax breaks, insurance benefits and life and death decision making for the spouse and children. If this is …

Sustainable Production: Definition, Comparison, And Application, Scott Swisher '08 Apr 2006

Sustainable Production: Definition, Comparison, And Application, Scott Swisher '08

The Park Place Economist

In what follows, I analyze the various definitions of sustainability that have been established in a diverse set of disciplines – the economics definitions of weak, strong, and environmental sustainability, the ecological definition, and the authoritative definitions enumerated in the Brundtland Report and Agenda 21 – and I argue that strong sustainability is the superior definition of sustainability in terms of production. Applying this definition to industrial firms via policies that harmonize producer actions with sustainable productive activity will require a fundamental readjustment of both producer and consumer behavior.

Drought's Affect On Soybean Prices, Patrick Cinquegani '06 Apr 2006

Drought's Affect On Soybean Prices, Patrick Cinquegani '06

The Park Place Economist

Droughts are among the most feared natural disasters. They can affect the lives of many people such as farmers, consumers, or commodity traders. Droughts have taken a year’s work and salary away from farmers, led to higher prices for consumers, and taken the life savings away from some speculators. There has been a recent push in science to better understand the enigma of a drought. However, the research has not yet prevented people from losing a lot of money. The best way to protect people is by understanding how prices react to droughts. Agricultural prices are inherently unstable, primarily due …

The Effects Of 9/11 On The Fire Fighter Labor Market, Kathleen Frawley '06 Apr 2006

The Effects Of 9/11 On The Fire Fighter Labor Market, Kathleen Frawley '06

The Park Place Economist

The purpose of this study is to look at this apparent increase in demand for fire protection services in the theoretical framework of derived demand. The theory of derived demand tells us that the demand for labor in a certain field is determined by the demand for the goods or services produced by that labor (Freeman, 1972). More specifically, we should expect to see a shift to the right of the demand curve for fire protection services since September Eleventh. This should lead to greater employment levels and higher wages in the labor market for fire fighters.

Purchased Inputs Versus Time Inputs In Child Development, Nick Holland '06 Apr 2006

Purchased Inputs Versus Time Inputs In Child Development, Nick Holland '06

The Park Place Economist

This study considers the question: Does participating in daycare outside the home put the child at a future disadvantage? However, there appears to be two forces at work which may result in two different answers to this question. One or two possibilities may happen when a child participates in daycare. First, the child loses nurturing time with his or her parents. This effect, the lost time effect, should hinder a child’s development. The second effect is the purchased input effect. A child who is in daycare spends less time with his or her parents, but that parent is able to …

Market Reactions To Changes In The S&P 500 Index: An Industry Analysis, James Malic '06 Apr 2006

Market Reactions To Changes In The S&P 500 Index: An Industry Analysis, James Malic '06

The Park Place Economist

This paper observes the abnormal returns relative to the market’s returns for additions to and deletions from the S&P 500 index from 2000-2003. More importantly, I categorize additions and deletions by industries in order to see if any particular industry in the index has greater returns than others around change dates. The knowledge of how stocks in a particular industry react after an announcement may lead investors to favor some industries more than others when investing around a date of change to the S&P 500 index.

Is The Nigerian Curricula In Economics Relevant For The Nigerian Economy Of The 21st Century., J. A. Achilike

Bullion

The loopholes in Nigeria's educational system have created a death of capacity in the Nigerian economy. No nation can develop without qualitative education. The paper examines the relevance of the economics curricula in Nigeria's tertiary institutions in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. It highlights its problems and examines the efforts of National University Commission and Ministry of Education in meeting the challenges of economics education in Nigeria. Finally the study concludes that, the Nigerian Economics curricular is critically under developed and does not follow government economic policies, but if all the recommendations are adopted the Nigerian economics curricula …

The 2004 Presidential Election: Did Voters Bring Their Pocketbooks To The Polls?, Paul Masi Jan 2006

The 2004 Presidential Election: Did Voters Bring Their Pocketbooks To The Polls?, Paul Masi

Undergraduate Economic Review

In the wake of the 2004 presidential election, supporters of Senator John Kerry’s candidacy searched for explanations of voter behavior. The Kerry campaign succeeded in turning out record numbers of low-income voters. Kerry strategists predicted that these voters would hold incumbent President George W. Bush responsible for a decline in their personal economic well-being. Kerry attempted to facilitate this electoral behavior by offering what he believed to be an economic plan attractive to low-income voters. The pocketbook theory of voting underpinned this strategy. This theory asserts that voters consider the perceived impact which an incumbent has had on their personal …
