Sensors And Actuators For The Cochlear Implant Using Inherently Conducting Polymers, Yanzhe Wu Jan 2006

Sensors And Actuators For The Cochlear Implant Using Inherently Conducting Polymers, Yanzhe Wu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study considered the use of various inherently conducting polymer (ICP)-based devices for utilisation with the cochlear implant. Investigations centred on the use of polypyrrole (PPy) to produce a mechanical sensor, actuators and controlled release devices. The development of a novel force sensor using the electrodes that are an integrated part of the cochlear implant itself was also investigated. Investigation into mechanically induce electrical signals using PPybased mechanical sensors showed that the polarity of the voltage output was dependent on the dopant ion in the conducting polymer. In addition, it was found that the signal amplitude was related to the …

Novel Nanostructured Conducting Polymer Systems Based On Sulfonated Polyaniline, Fatemeh Masdarolomoor Jan 2006

Novel Nanostructured Conducting Polymer Systems Based On Sulfonated Polyaniline, Fatemeh Masdarolomoor

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The fully sulfonated polyaniline, Poly(2-methoxyaniline-5-sulfonic acid) (PMAS), is a watersoluble and electroactive conducting polymer. Its high water solubility makes it a potentially very attractive material for a range of applications. However, to date problems with its synthesis from MAS monomer and the impure nature of the PMAS product have hindered its exploitation. This thesis successfully addresses these problems and then subsequently exploits the pure high molecular weight PMAS obtained as a novel electroactive dopant in composite materials with other conducting polymers. The initial focus of this thesis was the development of a rapid purification technique capable of fractionating in gram …

Development And Characterisation Of Polyaniline - Carbon Nanotube Conducting Composite Fibres, Vahid Mottaghitalab Jan 2006

Development And Characterisation Of Polyaniline - Carbon Nanotube Conducting Composite Fibres, Vahid Mottaghitalab

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The present study describes methods for development and characterization of conducting electroactive polymer (CEP) fibre consisting of polyaniline (PAni) and single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) which have potential applications as electronic devices to form building blocks of electronic textiles. The conducting composite fibres of PAni- SWNT were developed respectively using two steps (acid doping after fibre spinning) and one step methods (doping during preparation of spinning solution). The effectiveness of nanotube inclusion for improvement of mechanical, electrical and electrochemical properties was studied in each method. During development of the fibres, techniques such as UV-Vis-NIR, Raman spectroscopy, Dynamic light scattering and …

Synthesis, Characterisation And Application Of Inherently Conducting Polymer Nanoparticles, Orawan Ngamna Jan 2006

Synthesis, Characterisation And Application Of Inherently Conducting Polymer Nanoparticles, Orawan Ngamna

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Synthesis of inherently conducting polymers (ICPs) nanoparticles is an option to improve the processability and conductivity of ICPs. In this thesis, the synthesis and application of ICPs nanoparticles has been demonstrated. Various polymerisation methods, such as emulsion polymerisation, use of steric stabiliser and synthesis in ionic liquid (IL) media, have been used to synthesise polymer nanoparticles. These synthesis methods render the ICPs nanoparticles stable as dispersions which are more processable and contain peculiar and fascinating properties superior to their bulk counterparts. These nanoparticles are further applied as mediators for biosensors. They have been fabricated into sensors using electrodeposition, evaporative casting, …
