We present a case study illustrating the challenges of analyzing accelerometer data taken from a sample of children participating in an intervention study designed to increase physical activity. An accelerometer is a small device worn on the hip that records the minute-by-minute activity levels of the child throughout the day for each day it is worn. The resulting data are irregular functions characterized by many peaks representing short bursts of intense activity. We model these data using the wavelet-based functional mixed model. This approach incorporates multiple fixed effects and random effect functions of arbitrary form, the estimates of which are …

Alternative Probeset Definitions For Combining Microarray Data Across Studies Using Different Versions Of Affymetrix Oligonucleotide Arrays, Jeffrey S. Morris, Chunlei Wu, Kevin R. Coombes, Keith A. Baggerly, Jing Wang, Li Zhang

Many published microarray studies have small to moderate sample sizes, and thus have low statistical power to detect significant relationships between gene expression levels and outcomes of interest. By pooling data across multiple studies, however, we can gain power, enabling us to detect new relationships. This type of pooling is complicated by the fact that gene expression measurements from different microarray platforms are not directly comparable. In this chapter, we discuss two methods for combining information across different versions of Affymetrix oligonucleotide arrays. Each involves a new approach for combining probes on the array into probesets. The first approach involves …
An Econometric Method Of Correcting For Unit Nonresponse Bias In Surveys, Martin Ravallion, Anton Korinek, Johan Mistiaen
An Econometric Method Of Correcting For Unit Nonresponse Bias In Surveys, Martin Ravallion, Anton Korinek, Johan Mistiaen
Martin Ravallion
Past approaches to correcting for unit nonresponse in sample surveys by re-weighting the data assume that the problem is ignorable within arbitrary subgroups of the population. Theory and evidence suggest that this assumption is unlikely to hold, and that household characteristics such as income systematically affect survey compliance. We show that this leaves a bias in the re-weighted data and we propose a method of correcting for this bias. The geographic structure of nonresponse rates allows us to identify a micro compliance function, which is then used to re-weight the unit-record data. An example is given for the US Current …

This chapter describes a systematic and targeted approach for estimating the impact of each of a large number of baseline covariates on an outcome that is measured repeatedly over time. These variable importance estimates can be adjusted for a user-specified set of confounders and lend themselves in a straightforward way to obtaining confidence intervals and p-values. Hence, they can in particular be used to identify a subset of baseline covariates that are the most important explanatory variables for the time-varying outcome of interest. We illustrate the methodology in a data analysis aimed at finding mutations of the human immunodeficiency virus …

We introduce a simple-to-use graphical tool that enables researchers to easily prepare time-of-flight mass spectrometry data for analysis. For ease of use, the graphical executable provides default parameter settings experimentally determined to work well in most situations. These values can be changed by the user if desired. PrepMS is a stand-alone application made freely available (open source), and is under the General Public License (GPL). Its graphical user interface, default parameter settings, and display plots allow PrepMS to be used effectively for data preprocessing, peak detection, and visual data quality assessment.

In previous work it was shown that assumptions, y = y' and z = z’, within Lorentz Transformations were needless, and therefore groundless. Because of such assumptions, Lorentz Transformations (LT) depend on the body’s spatial orientation, i.e. the well-known transverse and longitudinal transformations of magnitudes, characterized by different scaling factors. On the contrary, the development of LT without assumptions, brought about new transformations that do not depend on spatial orientation and a unique mass definition, m = °m /[1 –(v/c)^2]^(3/2). As it is known, Einstein arrived at two definitions: transverse mass mT = °m /[1 –(v/c)^2]^ (1/2) and longitudinal mass …
Gravitation In Vectorial Relativity, Jorge A. Franco
Gravitation In Vectorial Relativity, Jorge A. Franco

It is known that Kepler’s Laws can be derived from the Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation. For doing this, mass is considered as an invariable parameter. Although this consideration works wonderfully to solve most of problems in astronomy calculations, as in all physics, when body’s speeds are so high and very precise measurements are required, the referred Kepler Laws do not cope enough what is expected. That’s why the General Theory of Relativity materialized. As it was indirectly pointed out by Einstein in 1905, Newton and Kepler Laws do not consider the relativistic variation of mass with its velocity. In …

In previous work it was shown that instead of the known Lorentz Transformations (LT) the new obtained Vectorial Lorentz Transformations (VLT) were the transformations that truly respected the postulates of the Principle of Relativity and the consideration of the speed of light as a universal constant. In this review is presented the way how it is possible to obtain practical consequences of the VLT, and its applications to our real life.

The paper presents initial research of effects of some factors on the amount of gaseous pollutants formation during medical waste incineration in a two-stage starved air fluidised bed reactor. In the research was included the impact of such factors as oxygen contents in flue gases, frequency of waste loading, momentary mass flow of waste and temperature in the secondary combustion chambers. Measurements showed that the waste incineration in large amount periodically caused excessive emissions incomplete combustion products (CO, HC), especially during wrong operation of the combustion system. The work demonstrated that the essential importance for CO and HC formation reducing …

Anaerobic Catalytic Oxidation Of Hydrocarbons In Moving Heat Waves. Case Simulation: Propane Oxidative Dehydrogenation In A Packed Adiabatic V-Ti Oxide Catalyst Bed, Andrey N. Zagoruiko
Andrey N Zagoruiko
The model simulation study has shown that the anaerobic process of oxidative dehydrogenation of propane under periodic alteration of feeding between propane and air may be realized in adiabatic catalyst beds in stable continuous cyclic mode in two-reactor scheme. In case of appropriate choice of process parameters (cycle duration, feeding flow rates) the process appears to be autothermal, i.e. it does not require any inlet gas preheating for stable operation. Compared to similar steady-state adiabatic process, the proposed process is characterized with much lower maximum catalyst temperatures, giving the way to process pure propane without diluting it with inert gases, …

This poster shows a comparison of three derived tropospheric ozone residual (TOR) products with integrated tropospheric ozone columns from ozonesonde profile: (1) the method of Ziemke et al. (2006), (2) a modified version of Fishman et al. (2003), and (3) a trajectory mapping approach. In each case, MLS ozone profiles are integrated to the tropopause and subtracted from OMI (TOMS retrieval) total column ozone. The effectiveness of each of these techniques is examined as a function of latitude, time, and geographic region. In general, we find good agreement between the derived products and the ozonesondes, with the Fishman et al. …

The title new diquinaldine derivative, C27H24N4, forms molecular assemblies organized by intermolecular quinoline π–π stacking [3.356 (3) and 3.440 (3) Å] and both inter- and intramolecular N—H⋯N hydrogen bonds [3.039 (3)–3.104 (3) Å and 129 (2)–172 (2)°]. The combination of such interactions provides readily definable contacts that propagate along each crystallographic axis.

Wavelet-Based Functional Mixed Model Analysis: Computational Considerations, Richard C. Herrick, Jeffrey S. Morris
Jeffrey S. Morris
Wavelet-based Functional Mixed Models is a new Bayesian method extending mixed models to irregular functional data (Morris and Carroll, JRSS-B, 2006). These data sets are typically very large and can quickly run into memory and time constraints unless these issues are carefully dealt with in the software. We reduce runtime by 1.) identifying and optimizing hotspots, 2.) using wavelet compression to do less computation with minimal impact on results, and 3.) dividing the code into multiple executables to be run in parallel using a grid computing resource. We discuss rules of thumb for estimating memory requirements and computation times in …

Architecture Of Air-Filled Caves Within The Karst Of The Brooksville Ridge, West-Central Florida, Lee J. Florea
Lee J Florea, PhD, P.G.
Air-filled caves surveyed in the Brooksville Ridge of west-central Florida provide insight into the organization of karstic permeability within the unconfined portions of the Upper Floridan Aquifer. The morphology of the passages that compose these caves in geologically young, high-permeability limestones is strikingly different from caves found in ancient carbonates far from the influence of the coast. Cave passages in west-central Florida are laterally extensive and tiered. Principal horizons of cave development occur between +3 m and +5 m, +12 m and +15 m, and +20 m and +22 m above modern sea level. The primary guide of cave passage …

Bayesian Sample Size Calculations In Phase Ii Clinical Trials Using A Mixture Of Informative Priors., Byron J. Gajewski, Matthew S. Mayo
Byron J Gajewski
A number of researchers have discussed phase II clinical trials from a Bayesian perspective. A recent article by Mayo and Gajewski focuses on sample size calculations, which they determine by specifying an informative prior distribution and then calculating a posterior probability that the true response will exceed a prespecified target. In this article, we extend these sample size calculations to include a mixture of informative prior distributions. The mixture comes from several sources of information. For example consider information from two (or more) clinicians. The first clinician is pessimistic about the drug and the second clinician is optimistic. We tabulate …

We need large digital archives to preserve scholarly content for generations to come and we need them now. Deciding who should do the archiving (e.g. librarians and archivists), what to archive, where in the scholarly community archiving should be undertaken, and how to do it successfully, is starting to come into focus. A brief review of the scholarly digital archiving efforts underway reveals some commonality of intent. This can be contrasted with a clear need for decisions regarding the scope of what should be digitally archived, and ultimately, how archives in their many forms might be best constructed. While exploring …

Some Statistical Issues In Microarray Gene Expression Data, Matthew S. Mayo, Byron J. Gajewski, Jeffrey S. Morris
Jeffrey S. Morris
In this paper we discuss some of the statistical issues that should be considered when conducting experiments involving microarray gene expression data. We discuss statistical issues related to preprocessing the data as well as the analysis of the data. Analysis of the data is discussed in three contexts: class comparison, class prediction and class discovery. We also review the methods used in two studies that are using microarray gene expression to assess the effect of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) fields on gene expression. Our intent is to provide a guide for radiation researchers when conducting studies involving microarray gene expression …

Morphologic Features Of Conduits And Aquifer Response In The Unconfined Floridan Aquifer System, West Central Florida, Lee J. Florea, H L. Vacher
Lee J Florea, PhD, P.G.
Conduits within the unconfined Floridan Aquifer of west-central Florida include both horizontal and vertical components. In this paper, we investigate each and propose theories based upon cave survey data and a collection of over 300 Florida cave maps. First, we find that vertical portions of conduits visually correlate to fractures, and these fractures tend to be the dominant control of conduit directionality. Length-weighted rose diagrams of passage directions reveal a NW-SE and NE-SW pattern of conduit directions statistically similar to results found in remote sensing studies of photolinears. Secondly we note that horizontal elements of conduits occur at consistent horizons …

In this paper we present the application of a novel methodology to scientific citation and collaboration networks. This methodology is designed for understanding the governing dynamics of evolving networks and relies on an attachment kernel, a scalar function of node properties, which stochastically drives the addition and deletion of vertices and edges. We illustrate how the kernel function of a given network can be extracted from the history of the network and discuss other possible applications.
