The Urban Transportation Decision-Making Process: A Qualitative Examination Of Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area, Aleksandra Georgieva Tepedelenova

Student Work

This thesis focuses on the transportation decision-making process in urban areas with a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). It recognizes the importance of transportation planning for decision-making, in that planning supports decision-making. This research is a qualitative case study, which examines transportation decision-making in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) is the MPO of the urban area. Responsible parts for transportation planning are the MAPA Transportation Technical Advisory Committee (TTAC) and the MAPA Council of Officials. The researcher conducts a series of interviews with members of the two groups in order to address the research questions. …

Culture As Concept And Influence In Environmental Research And Management, Lesley M. Head, D. Trigger, J. Mulcock Dec 2005

Culture As Concept And Influence In Environmental Research And Management, Lesley M. Head, D. Trigger, J. Mulcock

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Given that human activities have been implicated in the vast majority of contemporary environmental problems, it might be expected that research effort into those activities and the attitudes from which they stem would be both strongly supported by funding agencies, and of central interest to environmental scientists and land managers. In this paper we focus on an undervalued area of environmental humanities research—cultural analysis of the beliefs, practices and often unarticulated assumptions which underlie human–environmental relations. In discussing how cultural processes are central to environmental attitudes and behaviours, and how qualitative research methods can be used to understand them in …

From Self-Sufficiency To Personal And Family Sustainability: A New Paradigm For Social Policy, Robert Leibson Hawkins Dec 2005

From Self-Sufficiency To Personal And Family Sustainability: A New Paradigm For Social Policy, Robert Leibson Hawkins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Current social policy that affects welfare recipients focuses on the concept of "self-sufficiency" where leaving welfare for work is the goal. While this approach has reduced welfare rolls, it has not necessarily helped low-income people improve their economic, educational, or social outlook. This paper suggests that the concept of Personal and Family Sustainability (PFS) may be a better way to evaluate and direct social policy. A definition of PFS is developed from the environmental and community development roots of sustainability and four domains for creating PFS indicators are introduced.

An Examination Of The Perceived College Leadership, Governance, And Decision Making From Governing Board Members At Selected Midwest Tribal Colleges, William L. Gourneau Dec 2005

An Examination Of The Perceived College Leadership, Governance, And Decision Making From Governing Board Members At Selected Midwest Tribal Colleges, William L. Gourneau

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional American Indian leadership was the foundation of today‘s Indian leadership. The belief in the Indian value system, which was integrated throughout traditional leadership, has greatly contributed to leadership qualities for Indian people. A change in how Native Americans interpret Indian leadership began with the introduction of tribal governments. Tribal governments forced Indian people into a different form of leadership. Although new leadership roles came into existence, the concept of traditional leadership continued. Many current tribal leaders were looked upon favorably if they possess traditional cultural values. Even today, elders and community members with strong cultural knowledge are sought out …

Linking Pastoralists And Exporters In A Livestock Marketing Chain: Recent Experiences From Ethiopia, D. Layne Coppock, Solomon Desta, Getachew Gebru, Seyoum Tezera Dec 2005

Linking Pastoralists And Exporters In A Livestock Marketing Chain: Recent Experiences From Ethiopia, D. Layne Coppock, Solomon Desta, Getachew Gebru, Seyoum Tezera

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

The Boran of southern Ethiopia have been traditionally viewed as unwilling or unable to engage in large scale, commercialized livestock trade. Here we report on the creation of a new livestock marketing chain from the Borana Plateau to export outlets largely serving the Gulf States. Since 2003 various meetings and exchange tours were organized by collaborating agencies and PARIMA to directly link pastoral producers with livestock exporters and policy makers. This occurred against a backdrop of growing export demand for small ruminants, rapid development of private export industry, formation of well-trained pastoral marketing groups (often dominated by women), and provision …

The Access Miami Model-- Shifting The Paradigm A Case Study In Sustainable Community Development Through Partnerships And Community Resource Maximization, Danny Santivasci Nov 2005

The Access Miami Model-- Shifting The Paradigm A Case Study In Sustainable Community Development Through Partnerships And Community Resource Maximization, Danny Santivasci

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

Affordable housing for low- and moderate-income earners has become the premier issue at the forefront of the community development debate. Throughout the last century, immigration, urbanization, suburbanization, gentrification and re-urbanization have left low- and moderate-income earners very few options in terms of affordable housing, with the problem growing increasingly worse. Today, rapidly changing housing markets, the reemergence of downtown as the place to live, increased labor costs and the present presidential administration’s desire to drastically scale back the funding of community development projects has led to what many call an affordable housing crisis. Municipalities struggle to find the funds to …

The Albion Statement: Healthy People, Places, And Communities: A 2025 Vision For Michigan’S Food And Farming, Kenneth Dahlberg

Kenneth Dahlberg

Our vision is for a more self-reliant, secure, and sustainable Michigan by 2025. A
Michigan where a widespread recognition of the need to nurture and sustain our
people, communities, and environments combines with a broad and active citizens’
movement to make substantial gains towards: food security for all; sustainable family farms and foodways that provide a significant portion of Michigan’s food; healthier, more self-reliant communities and cities built upon
meaningful livelihoods for all; healthy air, waters, soils, and habitats throughout the state.
We envision a Michigan where everyone has a voice and is heard.

The Role Of Malagasy Women In Community Development: Analyzing The Potential For The Creation Of A Women’S Association For Alternative Livelihoods In Ifaty, Amanda Fencl

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Integrated Conservation and development projects (ICDPs) have increased in number worldwide as conservation organizations have to come to terms with the importance of involving and addressing the needs of local human populations to order to achieve their conservation goals. Madagascar’s unique biodiversity, environmental degradation, and plaguing poverty has made ICDPs crucial in achieving national goals of tripling the area of natural heritage conserved and poverty reduction through socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable development. In order to understand how such sustainable development can be achieved, it is essential to spend time enhancing one’s understanding of the local mentality and worldview. On …

Community Coalitions: Implications For Educational Policy And Administrators, A Study Of Anderson Elementary In The Anderson Weed And Seed Neighborhood., Mary A. Rausch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2001, the Anderson Neighborhood of Bristol, Tennessee, received official recognition as a Weed and Seed site by the United States Department of Justice. This designation is provided to a local coalition of committed community members organized to “weed” out the elements that contribute to crime and delinquency in a targeted neighborhood and “seed” in strategies to build strong neighborhoods. Anderson Elementary School is a key partner in the effort and the conduit for a variety of coalition initiatives.

Through investigation of measures and surveys administered at Anderson Elementary School, the study was designed to ascertain if there were improvements …

A Comprehensive Comparison Of The Growth-Management Programs Of Oregon And Florida, And The Possible Implications For Tennessee's Growth-Management Programs, Steven Lampkins Aug 2005

A Comprehensive Comparison Of The Growth-Management Programs Of Oregon And Florida, And The Possible Implications For Tennessee's Growth-Management Programs, Steven Lampkins

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The state of Tennessee adopted The Comprehensive Growth plan in 1997 in an effort to coordinate and control growth. The state legislative assembly recognized that coordinated and controlled growth is essential to maintain the quality of life thatTennessee residents expect. The creation of growth-management legislation is a significant step in the right direction; the adoption of a bottom-up management method has seriously compromised the effectiveness of the growth-management program in the state. The state has failed to allocate the necessary funding and has not established an effective incentive program to facilitate compliance with a bottom-up growthmanagement method. The state has also placed …

The Importance Of Nonviolence In United Nations Peacekeeping, Jeffrey Lowell Aug 2005

The Importance Of Nonviolence In United Nations Peacekeeping, Jeffrey Lowell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The previous two decades have brought to light many issues with the role of the United Nations in peacekeeping. The disasters in Rwanda, Kosovo, Somalia, and now the Sudan, give credence to the idea that something is a serious fundamental flaw in the United Nation's approach to making the world a more peaceful place. The use of violence, or the threat of violence, cannot be used to bring about lasting peace. Evidence of this fundamental flaw is seen throughout the UIV's history, but perhaps nowhere as glaring as the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. That peace enforcement operation ran just as …

Synthesis Of Design Guidelines And Experimental Data For Water Quality Function In Agricultural Landscapes In The Intermountain West, Susan Buffler, Craig Johnson, John Nicholson, Nancy Mesner Jul 2005

Synthesis Of Design Guidelines And Experimental Data For Water Quality Function In Agricultural Landscapes In The Intermountain West, Susan Buffler, Craig Johnson, John Nicholson, Nancy Mesner

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

Currently, there is no scientific literature examining appropriate riparian buffer widths for water quality for streams on private agriculturally dominated lands in arid regions of the Intermountain West. The initial step in this research effort was a review of buffer research as documented in the literature in other physiographic regions of the United States. Research findings on appropriate buffer widths for water quality parameters were synthesized using a matrix format. Differences between arid and non-arid landscape characteristics, soil, topography, vegetation, climate and hydrology and their effect on buffers for water quality were also researched. The combined research findings in this …

Overview Of Federal Wealth-Building Policies Relevant To Rural America, Jon Bailey Jul 2005

Overview Of Federal Wealth-Building Policies Relevant To Rural America, Jon Bailey

Center for Social Development Research

While the general philosophy behind wealth-building strategies generally makes little or no distinction between urban and rural areas, the federal government has established a specific regime of rural wealth-building programs recognizing the unique economies and challenges facing rural people and rural communities. This is particularly true for home ownership and business development and in the rural development programs of the United States Department of Agriculture. This paper provides an overview of federal wealth-building programs that apply to rural people and rural places in the United States, with an emphasis on those programs in USDA and other federal agencies that apply …
