Joseph Smith As An American Restorationist, Richard T. Hughes
Joseph Smith As An American Restorationist, Richard T. Hughes
BYU Studies Quarterly
Richard Bushman’s wonderfully expansive paper “Joseph Smith’s Many Histories” reminds us in forceful ways of the historical complexity that helped create the Mormon Prophet, Joseph Smith. Bushman also reminds us that while historical complexity is embedded in history, it embeds itself as well in the hearts and minds of human beings who discover the various realities of history and then appropriate those realities for their own purposes. As an illustration of this point, Bushman tells the story of Christopher Columbus— how his standing as the grandfather of the United States was neither acknowledged nor celebrated until after 1776.
Joseph Smith And The Making Of A Global Religion, Jan Shipps
Joseph Smith And The Making Of A Global Religion, Jan Shipps
BYU Studies Quarterly
In regard to the other “worlds” of the first Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith was certainly “in that world and of it.” He was clearly in attendance “in his own time;” he attempted to recover past worlds; he was and is present in his own and in the personal worlds of others; and he challenged the theological world of his day.

Border Crossings: Baha’I Women And Narratives Of Learning To Be Global Citizens, Siew Sim Chin
Adult Education Research Conference
This is an empirical study of how ten Baha’i women learn to cultivate a sense of global belonging through mapping and entering the world from a spiritual paradigm. Emerging from the (re)constitution of their identities across place, nations, and religion is a widening of loyalties and expanded belonging.
"The Day The Earth Stood Still”: 1950'S Sci-Fi, Religion And The Alien Messiah, Matthew Etherden
"The Day The Earth Stood Still”: 1950'S Sci-Fi, Religion And The Alien Messiah, Matthew Etherden
Journal of Religion & Film
The Day the Earth Stood Still is a unique film for its time. From a secular point of view, it was one of the first to not portray aliens as the enemy. From a spiritual point of view, it has many similarities to the gospel accounts of the public life and teachings of Jesus. This essay will consider the religious significance of this film (both in its historical context and the present), comparing it to similar works and contrasting it with the beliefs of a number of New Age movements. The main character, Klaatu, will then be considered as a …

Changing Religious Structures And Civil Society In Latin America: The Case Of Nicaragua, John G. Poffenbarger
Changing Religious Structures And Civil Society In Latin America: The Case Of Nicaragua, John G. Poffenbarger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Two phenomena have been ongoing in Central America over the past 30 years. The first has been a change in the dominant religious structures in the region with the growth of Evangelical Protestantism and Pentecostalism, as well as ongoing changes within the Roman Catholic Church, such as the rise and fall of Progressive Catholicism. The other major phenomenon has been the establishment of democratic regimes across the isthmus. Putnam, Inglehart, Almond & Verba, among others, assert that for a democracy to flourish a vibrant civil society must be present. These scholars, along with Huntington, Weber, and Wald et al. believe …
Civil Religion In The Interfaith Context Of Northern California: Revisiting Robert Bellah's Broken Covenant Project, Harlan Stelmach
Civil Religion In The Interfaith Context Of Northern California: Revisiting Robert Bellah's Broken Covenant Project, Harlan Stelmach
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Are there signs of new emerging myths and stories about our religious self-understanding as a nation that will help us address what Robert Bellah calls, our "third time of trial"? On and off for many years, I have been interested in the questions raised by Robert Bellah's work on civil religion. Specifically, I have sought answers to the above question posed in the last Chapter of Broken Covenant, "The Birth of New American Myths." Perhaps to be more precise about my interest in this question, I would at least have to go back to my graduate student days in Berkeley …

Building A Viable Muslim Community In Central Illinois: The Development And Implementation Of Acculturation Strategies At The Islamic Center Of Bloomington-Normal, Daniel Glade '05
Honors Projects
Developments in the American Muslim community over the last thirty years reveal a notable shift from individualist responses towards the exigencies of survival in a hostile foreign environment to a more community-based attempt to build a viable and lively Islamic environment in the United States. This shift was made possible by three factors including the expansion of Westem Islam through immigration and conversion in recent years, changing American popular attitudes towards Muslims, and developments abroad-particularly in the native countries of immigrant communities. Although responses to changing conditions vary both geographically and situationally, most Muslim communities have responded with some form …
From Heresies To Holy Wars: Toward A Theory Of Religious Conflict, Lester R. Kurtz
From Heresies To Holy Wars: Toward A Theory Of Religious Conflict, Lester R. Kurtz
Lester R. Kurtz
Explores the elements of a theory of religious conflict, starting with Simmel's understanding of conflict as a form of human sociation and religion as content of a conflict (religious rhetoric and framing are used to carry or explain the conflict) vs. the form of religious conflict, in which the conflict itself takes on a sacred nature. I also examine the ritualization of conflict and the nature of conflict symbols, that is highly-charged symbols that become lightning rods for conflict.

Does Religion Matter? A Test Of Classical Theories Of Deviance On Two Different Religious Types, Jill Hume Harrison
Does Religion Matter? A Test Of Classical Theories Of Deviance On Two Different Religious Types, Jill Hume Harrison
Doctoral Dissertations
This study uniquely examines two religious types and a control group of nonreligious respondents in relation to two classical theories of crime and deviant behavior. The first objective of this research is to determine whether a conventional religion, Methodism, deters crime and deviant behavior better than an unconventional religious type, Shambhala Buddhism, and a control group of nonreligious respondents. The second objective of this research is to examine the predictive capacities of measures for Hirschi's (1969) social control theory and Sutherland's (1947) differential association theory. Constructs for these theories are used to determine the magnitude of mediating and moderating effects …

Junius And Joseph: Presidential Politics And The Assassination Of The First Mormon Prophet, Robert S. Wicks, Fred R. Foister
All USU Press Publications
"Junius and Joseph examines Joseph Smith's nearly forgotten [1844] presidential bid, the events leading up to his assassination on June 27, 1844, and the tangled aftermath of the tragic incident. It... establishes that Joseph Smith's murder, rather than being the deadly outcome of a spontaneous mob uprising, was in fact a carefully planned military-style execution. It is now possible to identify many of the key individuals engaged in planning his assassination as well as those who took part in the assault on Carthage jail. And furthermore, this study presents incontrovertible evidence that the effort to remove the Mormon leader from …

Constitutional Conversations And New Religious Movements: A Comparative Case Study, Leigh H. Greenhaw, Michael H. Koby
Constitutional Conversations And New Religious Movements: A Comparative Case Study, Leigh H. Greenhaw, Michael H. Koby
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Using the metaphor of a constitutional conversation to compare the treatment of a relatively new and unpopular religion by the legal systems of the United States, Russia, and Spain, this Article examines the methodology by which laws affecting religion are made and enforced. It uses as a case study the interaction of the Jehovah's Witnesses with the legal system of the United States, comparing it with more recent interactions in Russia and Spain. The Authors argue that while the experience in the United States was profoundly influenced by a common-law methodology, the experience in two civil-law countries, Russia and Spain, …
