Using Prospect Theory To Investigate Decision-Making Bias Within An Information Security Context, Neil J. Schroeder
Using Prospect Theory To Investigate Decision-Making Bias Within An Information Security Context, Neil J. Schroeder
Theses and Dissertations
Information security is an issue that has increased in importance over the past decade. In this time both practitioner and academic circles have researched and developed practices and process to more effectively handle information security. Even with growth in these areas there has been little research conducted into how decision makers actually behave. This is problematic because decision makers in the Department of Defense have been observed exhibiting risk seeking behavior when making information security decisions that seemingly violate accepted norms. There are presently no models in the literature that provide sufficient insight into this phenomenon. This study used Prospect …

We look at the relationship between business simulations and the educational theory of generative learning using the framework developed by Wittrock (1974, 1990, 1992). Our findings reveal opportunities for generative learning that occur at all phases of the simulation process. Awareness of these opportunities prepares faculty to get the most from the strategic decision-making simulations. and may assist them in defining the contribution associated with their use. We suggest areas for additional research.

Social utilities account for agent preferences and, thus, can characterize complex interrelationships, such as cooperation, compromise, negotiation, and altruism, that can exist between agents. Satisficing game theory, which is based on social utilities, offers a framework within which to design sophisticated multiagent systems. Key features of this approach are: a) an N-agent system may be represented by a 2N-dimensional Bayesian network, called a praxeic network; b) the theory accommodates a notion of situational altruism (a willingness to defer to others in a controlled way if so doing would actually benefit others under the condition that others wish to take advantage …
Enhancing Long-Term Retention In The Basic Managerial Finance Course, D. Stuart Bancroft, Larry P. Hegstad
Enhancing Long-Term Retention In The Basic Managerial Finance Course, D. Stuart Bancroft, Larry P. Hegstad
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
Students typically perceive the basic finance course to consist of a series of complex and disparate topics, each with its own conceptual framework, equations, and graphs. In the absence of a meaningful cognitive structure, they may fall back on rote memorization and find it difficult to internalize financial decision making fundamentals. Some tenets of learning theory offer useful insights into ways to organize classroom instruction for the purpose of enhancing long-term retention of critical concepts and procedures.
Partial Adjustable Autonomy In Multi-Agent Environment And Its Application To Military Logistics, Hoong Chuin Lau, Lucas Agussurja, Ramesh Thangarajoo
Partial Adjustable Autonomy In Multi-Agent Environment And Its Application To Military Logistics, Hoong Chuin Lau, Lucas Agussurja, Ramesh Thangarajoo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In a rapidly changing environment, the behavior and decision-making power of agents may have to be adaptive with respect to a fluctuating autonomy. In this paper, a centralized fuzzy approach is proposed to sense changes in environmental conditions and translate them to changes in agent autonomy. A distributed coalition formation scheme is then applied to allow agents in the new autonomy to renegotiate to establish schedule consistency. The proposed framework is applied to a real-time logistics control of a military hazardous material storage facility under peace-to-war transition.
Making Decision In Requirement Change Management, Saffena Ramzan, Naveed Ikram
Making Decision In Requirement Change Management, Saffena Ramzan, Naveed Ikram
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
Requirement change management a significant activity, which is performed through out the development of the software and even during the maintenance phase. It is the core activity to obtain one of the main objectives of software development, which is to satisfy the evolving needs of the customers. Software requirements are linked and dependent on other requirements and changing one requirement definitely affects interlinked requirements. Impact analysis is the crux of requirement change management which is to obtain with the change of requirements, so that the scope of that change is identified. Traceability is the pre-requisite to acquire proper impact analysis. …
Towards Knowledge Morphing: A Triangulation Approach To Link Tacit And Explicit Knowledge, Fehmida Hussain, Syed Sibte Raza Abidi, Syed Ali Raza
Towards Knowledge Morphing: A Triangulation Approach To Link Tacit And Explicit Knowledge, Fehmida Hussain, Syed Sibte Raza Abidi, Syed Ali Raza
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
Current knowledge management systems are largely designed to deal with a single knowledge modality. Given the diversity of knowledge modalities that encompass any given topic/problem it is reasonable to demand access and use of all available knowledge, irrespective of their representation modality, to derive a knowledge-mediated solution. This calls for selecting all knowledge elements (represented in different modalities) that are relevant to the solution of the problem at hand. Thus here we pursue the specification and implementation of such a knowledge-mediated solution using a triangulation approach leading to Knowledge Morphing. In this paper we present a tacit-explicit knowledge morphing (TEKM) …
Regret In Cancer-Related Decisions, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb
Regret In Cancer-Related Decisions, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Decision-related regret is a negative emotion associated with thinking about a past or future choice. The thinking component generally takes the form of a wish that things were otherwise and involves a comparison of what actually did or will take place with some better alternative--a counterfactual thought. For predecisional (anticipated) regret, the thinking involves a mental simulation of the outcomes that might result from different choice options. Prior research has focused on regret associated with decision outcomes, addressing especially (a) the comparison outcome selected and (b) whether the outcome resulted from action or inaction. More recent research examines regret associated …

Community-Owned Forests: Possibilities, Experiences, and Lessons Learned (June 16-19)
Community-owned forests may be the answer for some U.S. communities now confronting unanticipated and unwanted large scale land use changes – changes that could irrevocably change their local landscapes and quality of life. Across the country, millions of acres of private forest lands are being put up for sale as the forest products companies who own them find other, cheaper sources of supply. If, as is likely, purchasers divide and convert the forests to residential or other development uses, nearby communities face losing the critical economic, environmental, recreational, social, cultural, and aesthetic values and benefits those forests have traditionally provided. …
A Framework For Routing And Topological Decision-Making Within A Transformational Communications Architecture, Alexander I. Smith
A Framework For Routing And Topological Decision-Making Within A Transformational Communications Architecture, Alexander I. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
A Transformational Communications Architecture (TCA) has been proposed by the US government with the goal of creating "an Internet in the sky." This thesis presents a framework which places user requirements at the heart of routing and topological decision-making within the TCA. It provides new terminology to describe data transmissions and link characteristics and an approach to formulating cost functions to better meet user needs. The framework is intended to stimulate interest and focus efforts on how to meet military specific requirements by taking advantage of the TCA's diverse capabilities and topology. Cost functions using newly-defined parameters are simulated and …
Perceptions Of Efficacy Of Minority And Non-Minority School-Based Decision-Making Council Members In Kentucky's Region 1 And Region 2 School Systems., Anthony Ray Sanders
Perceptions Of Efficacy Of Minority And Non-Minority School-Based Decision-Making Council Members In Kentucky's Region 1 And Region 2 School Systems., Anthony Ray Sanders
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Shortly after the implementation of Kentucky's school-based decision-making councils, it became obvious that minorities were severely underrepresented on these councils. As a result, the Kentucky legislature enacted Section 160.352(3)(f) by which schools having 8% or more minority student population had to increase the school-based council membership to include a minority parent and/or teacher, elected by the parents or the teachers respectively, if no minority member was elected in the initial voting. Though the law required minority representation on these councils, very little research has been conducted regarding minority participation. This study investigated the perceptions of school council members regarding their …
A Primer On The Theory, Practice, And Pedagogy Underpinning A School Of Thought On Law And Business, James E. Holloway
A Primer On The Theory, Practice, And Pedagogy Underpinning A School Of Thought On Law And Business, James E. Holloway
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Recent policyless and lawless business decisions have prompted the judiciary and legislature to erode managerial discretion and judgment. This Article is a primer on the theoretical, practical, and pedagogical requirements for a legal-managerial school of thought to measure the business losses created by these judicial and legislative responses. A legal-managerial school must provide a theoretical evaluation of law and public policy, a practical integration of legal analysis and business methodology, and a pedagogical expansion of legal thinking to include business information. This Article initiates the debate on how a legal-managerial school of thought can further the study, practice, and teaching …
Decision Analysis Method For Air Mobility Beddown Planning Scenarios, Jacob M. Salmond
Decision Analysis Method For Air Mobility Beddown Planning Scenarios, Jacob M. Salmond
Theses and Dissertations
Currently at Air Mobility Command, Plans and Programming, Requirements Division (AMC/A75R), infrastructure requirements for a proposed permanent beddown location are accomplished through corporate knowledge and manual lookup. With the loss of corporate knowledge in the foreseeable future, AMC/A75R is would like to capture this knowledge base in an information system. This research developed a spreadsheet analysis tool that takes hard requirements and compares them with existing capabilities at a given location. Through gap analysis, the tool produced infrastructure requirement shortfalls and associated costs to satisfy the shortfalls.
An Evaluation Of Contingency Construction Methods Using Value Focused Thinking, John E. Tyron
An Evaluation Of Contingency Construction Methods Using Value Focused Thinking, John E. Tyron
Theses and Dissertations
Rapid Engineering Deployable, Heavy Operational Repair Squadron, Engineer (RED HORSE) Squadrons are 400-person, self-contained, combat engineer units that provide deployable and flexible expert construction capability for the United States Air Force. To help meet Air Force mission requirements, RED HORSE units currently employ a variety of traditional and innovative construction methods. But their alternatives-focused decision analysis approach to method selection limits their decision to known alternatives and may not fully achieve all of their objectives. This research developed a generic value-focused thinking (VFT) decision analysis model to help RED HORSE evaluate and select contingency construction methods. Eight alternatives were generated …

Knowledge management (KM) is becoming recognized as a valuable tool for the Department of Defense (DoD) in its effort to maintain a competitive, strategic advantage against its enemies in a new threat environment. Decision superiority is the ultimate end result and is only possible through the effective and efficient use of its chief key resource--knowledge. As the Air Force seeks to transform the way it does business the concept of knowledge management has made its way to the forefront of both the Air Force's Information Strategy and Information Resource Flight Plan. This research assesses the usefulness of a knowledge management …
Using Value-Focused Thinking To Evaluate The Practicality Of Ground-Source Heat Pumps At Military Installations, Jimmy J. Jeoun
Using Value-Focused Thinking To Evaluate The Practicality Of Ground-Source Heat Pumps At Military Installations, Jimmy J. Jeoun
Theses and Dissertations
Because of potential cost and energy savings, military decision-makers may want to consider the use of energy-efficient heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems at their installations. Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs), in particular, show great promise because of their low energy requirements and low life-cycle costs. However, there currently exists no design guidance or established criteria for HVAC selection. Consequently, military decision-makers have no basis for comparing conventional HVAC systems and GSHPs. The Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) methodology was used to create a multi-objective decision analysis model that measures the value of different HVAC systems. Consisting of five bottom-tier values and …
Investigating The Complexities Of Nation-Building: A Sub-National Regional Perspective, Matthew J. Robbins
Investigating The Complexities Of Nation-Building: A Sub-National Regional Perspective, Matthew J. Robbins
Theses and Dissertations
Stabilization and reconstruction operations are necessary to secure and maintain the peace in the aftermath of conflict. The complexities of nation-building involve many different but interrelated systems and institutions. The basic structure of a country may or may not remain; its political, economic, and judicial systems, cultural, educational, medical, and military institutions, and critical infrastructure all vitally contribute to the overall progression of stability and prosperity. Understanding the significance of the dynamic relationships between the forces in play during stability and reconstruction operations is paramount to the successful conclusion of such missions. The system dynamics model proposed in this research …

Psychology, Factfinding, And Entrapment, Kevin A. Smith
Psychology, Factfinding, And Entrapment, Kevin A. Smith
Michigan Law Review
Through the entrapment defense, the law acknowledges that criminal behavior is not always the result of a culpable mind, but is sometimes the result of an interaction between the individual and his environment. By limiting the amount of pressure and temptation that undercover agents may bring to bear on a target, the defense recognizes that the ordinary, law-abiding citizen can be persuaded, cajoled, or intimidated into criminal activity that, he would never consider absent law-enforcement interference. Appropriate application of the defense requires, however, that courts be able to accurately separate the truly wicked from the merely weak-willed, and offensively coercive …
Cultural Variation In The Theory Of The Firm, Donald W. Katzner
Cultural Variation In The Theory Of The Firm, Donald W. Katzner
Economics Department Working Paper Series
This paper presents a model of the firm that includes the possibility of firm and employee-on-the-job decision making based on alternatives to profit and utility maximization. Such alternatives are relevant and significant when explaining firm activity in cultural environments in which self interest is not considered to be a primary force driving human behavior. Three types of firms are defined and their properties compared: the Western firm, the Japanese firm, and the clan. The third is a combination of the first two.
Profit Maximization Versus Disadvantageous Inequality: The Impact Of Self-Categorization, Stephen M. Garcia, Avishalom Tor, Max H. Bazerman, Dale T. Miller
Profit Maximization Versus Disadvantageous Inequality: The Impact Of Self-Categorization, Stephen M. Garcia, Avishalom Tor, Max H. Bazerman, Dale T. Miller
Journal Articles
Choice behavior researchers (e.g., Bazerman, Loewenstein, & White, 1992) have found that individuals tend to choose a more lucrative but disadvantageously unequal payoff (e.g., self—$600/other—$800) over a less profitable but equal one (e.g., self—$500/other—$500); greater profit trumps interpersonal social comparison concerns in the choice setting. We suggest, however, that self-categorization (e.g., Hogg, 2000) can shift interpersonal social comparison concerns to the intergroup level and make trading disadvantageous inequality for greater profit more difficult. Studies 1–3 show that profit maximization diminishes when recipients belong to different social categories (e.g., genders, universities). Study 2 further implicates self-categorization, as selfcategorized individuals tend to …

Technical Risk Information: Decision Tool Or Rhetorical Ammunition? Undisputed Facts In The Yucca Mountain Debate, David M. Hassenzahl, Denise Tillery, Paulette Laidler
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications
This paper examines how both opponents and proponents of the proposed high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca mountain Nevada claim that uncontroversial information supports their conflicting positions. Four pieces of information in particular are claimed by both sides: the distance of the proposed site from Las Vegas, the volume of waste that has been produced, the threat of terrorism since 9/11/01, and the occurrence of an earthquake in early 2002. Possible explanations for the difference include naive positivism, social constructionism, persistent beliefs and implicit warrants. The latter two models better explain observed knowledge/preference states. If so, more or better information …

It highlights the possibilities for development of case studies that can challenge student teams to apply engineering economy tools while developing skills in a range of circular areas that are important to undergraduate engineering education and career success in engineering practice. Beyond building quantitative and qualitative business analysis skills, engineering economy cases can enhance student skills in other topical areas such as technical presentations, and report writing. The privatization initiatives and related decision models can also enhance human relations oriented skills in …
Changes In Gender Ideology Among Professional Women And Men In Cuba Today, Marta Nunez Sarmiento
Changes In Gender Ideology Among Professional Women And Men In Cuba Today, Marta Nunez Sarmiento
Cleveland State Law Review
This presentation summarizes the reflections of what it means to be women and men in Cuba today, among a group of Havana professionals. I asked them to emphasize the influence in this process of women's employment and decision making among women, two citizen rights which have been strongly promoted in Cuba in the last forty years. I also asked them to think about the socialization processes, which took place in Cuba and which contributed to these changes. Therefore, this paper is divided into two main topics: First, changes in gender ideology among Cuban professional men and women under the influence …
Legal Durability, Omri Ben-Shahar
Legal Durability, Omri Ben-Shahar
Articles
This paper develops a framework to study the effects of the durability of legal allocation decisions, such as trial outcomes, regulatory enactments and property entitlements. For a party favored by the legal allocation, a more durable decision is also more costly to secure, ex-ante. Thus, it is not the greater durability of the allocation that determines whether the “winner” is better-off, but other factors that are affected by the durability attribute, such as the cost of securing a favorable outcome and the ability of contesting parties to affect this cost. The paper develops conditions under which greater durability is irrelevant, …

The Experience Of Decision Making In Adolescent Females And Young Women With Mobility Limiting Disorders, Bernice Balzer Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Young women with mobility limiting disorders face many challenges as they move through adolescence into young adulthood. In addition to the challenges of this developmental period, they must consider their disability as they manage their lives. Competent decision making is a foundational skill for self-management and for transition in adulthood. It is also a protective factor for resilience. There is little research on decision making in adolescents with disabilities. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the decision making experiences of female adolescents and young women with mobility limiting disorders. Theoretical underpinnings for the study included Resilience Theory …

Do Maps Guide The Way To Npd Success? Theoretical And Practical Aspects Of Knowledge Mapping In Product Development, Antonie J, Jetter
Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
New product development success largely depends on the ability to combine newly acquired information on customer demands and technological options with knowledge that exists within the company. Project organization and high employee turnover, however, make it difficult to be informed about what knowledge is available within the company and to access it successfully. Knowledge maps, a popular concept in present knowledge management, offer a possible solution by ?guiding the way to knowledge?. Their purpose, structure and content varies greatly, as does their ability to capture different aspects of knowledge. This paper investigates the theoretical basis of different types of knowledge …
