The latest movement in trying to combat the U.S. crime problem is through "faith-based" corrections. These programs are in the infancy stages and minimal data are present at this time to illustrate true effectiveness of such programs. This study is a theoretical evaluation of such programs and incorporates a framework from Gary LaFree (1988). Results indicate that "faith-based" programs tend to be one dimensional and in order for them to work properly they must be set up in conjunction with other institutional changes. One of the challenging issues in wireless sensor networks is to acquire, process, and transmit information using the least amount of battery power; In response to this problem, a novel routing scheme for wireless sensor networks, called "Information Dissemination via Label Forwarding (IDLF)", is presented. IDLF consists of three information exchanging stages. In the first stage, a label is disseminated by a source. After a sink receives the label, it replies a request to the source. Traffic control of street intersections is one of the most critical elements in providing an efficient flow of traffic in urban networks. Conventionally, pretimed controllers are used, but they cannot respond to real time fluctuations in traffic demand. Traffic actuated signals provide an improvement over pretimed controllers, but their performance deteriorates under heavy traffic conditions. This paper reports on the design of an on-line simulation that enhanced preservice teacher practicum experience in the important area of literacy teaching. Research with more than 200 users of the simulation showed that it developed pre-service teacher understanding of complex classroom situations associated with the teaching of literacy by giving them the opportunity to slow down or accelerate classroom events, revisit and reflect on critical decision points and replay events in the light of new understandings. The purpose of this study is to identify critical factors for successful Six-Sigma implementation by using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach. Twenty-one experts, consisting of three-project champions and eighteen-black belts from five multinational companies (Singapore, Japan, and USA) locating in Thailand, were interviewed. The study has gone through four phases, including: (1) determining critical factors and performance measures in Six-Sigma implementation; (2) structuring the problem and building the AHP model; (3) collecting data from expert interviews; and (4) determining the normalized priority weights of individual factors and sub-factors. The notion of concurrent signatures was recently introduced by Chen, Kudla and Paterson. In concurrent signature schemes, two entities can produce two signatures that are not binding, until one of the parties releases an extra piece of information (namely the keystone). Subsequently, it was noted that the concurrent signature scheme proposed in the seminal paper cannot provide perfect ambiguity. Then, the notion of perfect concurrent signatures was introduced. In this paper, we define the notion of identity-based (or ID-based) perfect concurrent signature schemes. Biometric based authentication can provide strong security guarantee about the identity of users. Security of biometric data is particularly important as compromise of the data will be permanent. Cancelable biometrics store a non-invertible transformed version of the biometric data and so if the storage is compromised the biometric data remains safe. Cancelable biometrics also provide a higher level of privacy by allowing many templates for the same biometric data and hence non-linkability of user's data stored in different databases. This paper proposes a model-based adaptive control methodology for piezoelectric actuation systems to follow specified motion trajectories. This is motivated by a search for an effective control strategy to deal with the problem of parametric uncertainties such as disturbance and hysteresis effects. The proposed adaptive law is formulated by combining a parameter compensator and a conventional PD feedback control for a system to drive its position tracking error converging to zero. Embedding capacity, distortion and resilience to attacks are three key indicators to the performance of any image watermarking systems. Study has shown that Quantization Index Modulation (QIM) can in general achieve higher embedding capacity than Spread Spectrum (SS) systems at the same level of distortion. However, QIM is more sensitive to simple attacks such as Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN), Uniform Distribution Noise (UDN), and JPEG compression. Conveying distinctive and coherent brand associations is a key concern of modem brand management. Brands with a concise, consumer-relevant, and unique brand image are preferred by consumers. This study considers the contribution brand names can provide to building customer based brand equity. Recent cognitive theories of conceptual combination fonn the theoretical basis for analyzing consumer reactions toward brand names. Following these theories, three techniques to integrate brand name and product are developed. Reaction time measurements and association tests show that the techniques presented are an effective and efficient means to convey a brand's image.

Concept lattices assist human understanding in three ways: firstly, by collecting formal concepts that contain maximal sets of objects with shared attributes; secondly, the relatedness of concepts is revealed by providing a hierarchy of formal concepts in the information space. Finally, the concept lattice (drawn as a line diagram) reveals inferences that can automatically derive association rules. Therefore, a major hypothesis of the application of concept lattices is that they visually assist in understanding the structure of information contained within an information space. Total column amounts of CO, CH4, CO2 and N2O retrieved from SCIAMACHY nadir observations in its near-infrared channels have been compared to data from a ground-based quasi-global network of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers. The SCIAMACHY data considered 5 here have been produced by three different retrieval algorithms, WFM-DOAS (version 0.4, 0.41 for CH4), IMAP-DOAS (version 0.9) and IMLM (version 5.5) and cover the January to December 2003 time period. Comparisons have been made for individual data, as well as for monthly averages. Polythiophene, one of the most extensively studied conducting polymers, was selected as an actuator material due to its chemical and electrochemical stability both in air and moisture. In this work, poly(3-methylthiophene) based actuators were constructed electrochemically with a tubular geometrical configuration. The actuation behaviour was investigated regarding to the actuation strain generated, the stress produced and work per cycle performed by poly(3-methylthiophene) actuators. The effect of potential sweep rate and different electrolytes (ionic liquid and organic solvent) on the actuation performance were also explored. Poly(3-methylthiophene) actuators show an increase in actuation strain with an increase in applied load.

This paper presents theoretical and experimental investigation of mechanical-electrical properties of conducting polymers based bimorph sensors. A material parameter, hCP , is proposed to represent linear relationship between induction charge and the applied external deformation. Based on this assumption, a constitutive equation for bimorph sensors under steady-state external loadings are constructed and then solved. Mechanical-electrical properties of bimorph sensors are experimentally studied using both vibration-amplitude sweep mode and frequency sweep mode. The high-temperature creep-deformation behavior of a Ni-based M963 superalloy has been investigated over a broad stress range of 80 to 600 MPa at high temperatures (800 °C to 975 °C). The detailed dislocation configurations at different creep stages are examined through transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the deformation mechanism is stress and temperature dependent and mainly consists of three dislocation-controlling mechanisms: stacking faults and dislocation-pair shearing, dislocation bowing and Orowan looping, and dislocation climb.

In this paper I provide a theoretical analysis of difficulties experienced by students in having to transfer concepts they have learnt in high school to university mathematics. This analysis is based on the assumption that mathematical knowledge can be represented in the form of organised structures called schemas. The organisational quality of students’ mathematical schemas is a function of spread of network and strength of links between pieces of information. Well-developed schemas are argued here to facilitate assimilation of university mathematical concepts and the use of this new information in the solution of novel problems.

The goal of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of training and the effectiveness of different types of knowledge retention activities delivered by computer-based training programs. This study focused on a computer-based learning system called the Profound Learning Delivery System (PLS). PLS is an application designed to improve the content knowledge retention of adult learners who are completing computer-based training. This study used a pretest-posttest experimental design to compare adult learners’ knowledge of Microsoft Outlook ("Outlook, " 1997) before and after a computer-based training session.
