The Educational Roots Of Reformed Scholasticism: Dialectic And Scriptural Exegesis In The Sixteenth Century, Amy Nelson Burnett
The Educational Roots Of Reformed Scholasticism: Dialectic And Scriptural Exegesis In The Sixteenth Century, Amy Nelson Burnett
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Over the last twenty years research on later sixteenth- and seventeenth-century theology has led to a reappraisal or Protestant scholasticism and its relation to the Reformation. Earlier historians of doctrine viewed Protestant scholasticism as overly rationalistic at the expense of Reformation biblicism, heavily dependent on Aristotelian philosophy, and organized around a central doctrine such as predestination. The current consensus is that Protestant scholasticism reflected the Orthodox theologians’ deep familiarity with and commitment to the scriptural text; that if it did appropriate Aristotle, such appropriation was eclectic rather than slavish; and that the idea of a central dogma organizing all of …

Trucking Systems From Greece To America: Metaphorai, The Bacchai, And The Problem Of Vision In The Contemporary Theatre, Daniel Larner
Fairhaven Faculty Publications
Imagine my surprise as I walked around Athens in April of 1995, eagerly reading every word on every sign I saw, trying to digest my surroundings and intensify my encounter with the Greek language--imagine my surprise to see the same startling word painted on the side of one truck after another, the word metaforai.
It was a foreign land, a new culture for me. Maybe it would not be totally outrageous to find one truck full of metaphors, but two...three...a dozen? This is quite a business in Greece! Maybe when you have a culture that is three or four …

The Northeast Archives is proud to announce that we have completed reprocessing and preservation work on two major collections, the Aroostook County Collection and the Maine State Federated Labor Council Collection. Our graduate assistants made preservation master and CD copies of each tape and expanded the descriptions of the tape contents to better assist researchers in finding the information they need. This work has been supported by grants from the Maine Historical Records Advisory Board.

Geza Vermes And The Third Quest For The Historical Jesus: A Review Essay On ‘Jesus In His Jewish Context’, Gary R. Habermas
Geza Vermes And The Third Quest For The Historical Jesus: A Review Essay On ‘Jesus In His Jewish Context’, Gary R. Habermas
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
During the last few decades, the subject of the historical Jesus has once again moved into the center of scholarly studies among New Testament historians, exegetes, and theologians. In stark contrast to the movements of the nineteenth and mid-twentieth century, which exhibited very different concerns, the chief focus of the third quest for the historical Jesus is the Jewish background, setting, and context for Jesus' life and teachings. In addition to Jesus' teachings, the social sciences have supplied much of the backdrop regarding Jesus' surroundings.

Prioritizing ‘Ethnicities’: The Uncertainty Of Pomak-Ness In The Urban Greek Rhodoppe, Olga Demetriou
Olga Demetriou
This article shows how Greek government policies have affected group relations within the minority in western Thrace and how identification within the minority has changed over the last five decades, particularly as regards the concept of Pomak-ness. According to the official Greek terminology, the minority is “a (singular) Muslim minority made up of Gypsies, Pomaks and people of Turkish origin”, while official Turkish rhetoric maintains that the minority (again in the singular) is wholly Turkish. As will be shown in the article, most of the minority members living in the Rhodoppe area of Thrace prefer to classify themselves as Turkish, …

Balkan As A Metaphor In The Film Composition Of Goran Bregovic, Nela Trifkovic
Balkan As A Metaphor In The Film Composition Of Goran Bregovic, Nela Trifkovic
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The focus of this paper is the film composition of composer Goran Bregovic (born 1950) and the country of his birth Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia has undergone many major political changes over the past century and its ethno-political history over the past fifteen years could be considered as one of the most turbulent of our time. The aim of this thesis is to uncover the conceptual principles behind Bregovic’s unique approach to soundtrack music in order to create appropriate musical analogies in film composition. Bregovic’s musical career in the iconic Yugoslav rock band Bijelo dugme (White Button), his interest in the traditional …
National Stereotypes In Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Radmila Popovic
National Stereotypes In Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Radmila Popovic
MA TESOL Collection
This thesis explores how to deal with lexically encoded national stereotypes in the second language classroom. I address this question starting with previous research on stereotypes, and discussing a principled approach to interrelating insights from a variety of paradigms and disciplines. Then I shift to the linguistic analysis of nationality words in English - phrases, idioms and proverbs, as well as connotations which these lexical items are capable of developing in certain contexts. Finally, I consider the implication of the findings for foreign language teaching, and suggest a pedagogical model for dealing with stereotypes in the language classroom.
