Modified Delphi Investigation Of Exercise Science In Physical Education Teacher Education, Sean M. Bulger Dec 2004

Modified Delphi Investigation Of Exercise Science In Physical Education Teacher Education, Sean M. Bulger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

As physical education teacher educators experiment with alternative pedagogical approaches to bridge the gap between subdisciplinary theory and professional practice, the need for enhanced multi-disciplinary research and communication continues. The purpose of this study was to determine the critical exercise science competencies, and associated instructional methods, that are recommended for inclusion in the physical education teacher education undergraduate curriculum. An initial list of theoretical and applied exercise science competencies was constructed using the knowledge, skills, and abilities recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine for individuals working in the field of exercise science. The two-round, modified Delphi procedure involved …

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Goals Of Secondary Schools Physical Education In State Of Kuwait, Obaid Alshammari May 2004

Teachers' Perceptions Of The Goals Of Secondary Schools Physical Education In State Of Kuwait, Obaid Alshammari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of the Kuwait physical education teachers relevant to the goals of the physical education program for secondary schools. Data were collected from a sample consisting of 200 (n = 200) physical education teachers teaching in six provinces in Kuwait. For data collection, a five-point Likert scale questionnaire, named "Kuwaiti Physical Education Goals" (KPEG) was designed. The instrument asked the participants to indicate the level of agreement with four categories of physical education goals. In addition, differences in teachers based on gender between physical education teachers' perceptions were investigated. An examination …

Reliability Of Position And Mobility Of The First Ray In Experienced And Inexperienced Examiners, Crystal Shirk May 2004

Reliability Of Position And Mobility Of The First Ray In Experienced And Inexperienced Examiners, Crystal Shirk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purposes of this study were to determine intra and interrater reliability for Root's method for measuring first ray position and mobility for experienced and inexperienced examiners. This study was a single-blind prospective reliability study examining experienced and inexperienced examiners in their measurements of first ray position and mobility. A total of 36 subjects and four examiners (two experienced and two inexperienced) participated in this study. Five recorders recorded all data. Subjects came in on two separate occasions, one week apart, so that examiners could evaluate their bilateral first ray position and mobility, using Root's technique for both measurements. Kappa …

Do Practice Weights Vary From Wrestling Weights Throughout The Season And Can The Difference Predict Win/Loss Records?, Rebecca L. Sidener May 2004

Do Practice Weights Vary From Wrestling Weights Throughout The Season And Can The Difference Predict Win/Loss Records?, Rebecca L. Sidener

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purposes of the study were (1) to determine if weight fluctuates between 2 time points from the competition weight; (2) to determine if the wrestlers who had difference in weight also had differences in win percentages. The independent variables were competition weights and time. The dependent variable was the average weight deviation for the first question. The independent variable was the average weight deviation at the two time points (two variables) and the dependent variable was the win percentage for the second question. A Pearson's Correlation and two independent t-tests were used for statistical information. The study consisted of …

Effects Of A Curricular Model On Skill Development, Knowledge, And Game Performance, Tony Pritchard May 2004

Effects Of A Curricular Model On Skill Development, Knowledge, And Game Performance, Tony Pritchard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Being able to play a sport has been a primary goal of any physical education program (NASPE, 1995). A tool used by physical education teachers in promoting sport has been the use of curricular models. Two models that have been of interest have been the Sport Education Curricular Model (SECM) and a multi-activity model. With little research investigating how these two models influence game play in the secondary level; the purpose of this study was to investigate how the SECM and a longer version of the multi-activity model called the Extended Multi-Activity Model (EMAM) would affect skill development, knowledge, and …

An Analysis Of The Use Of Web-Based Instruction In The Physical Education And Related Departments In The Pennsylvania State System Of Higher Education, Joanne Leight

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of web-based instruction (WBI) in Physical Education and related Departments in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PSSHE) was studied by analyzing computer use, obstacles to WBI, factors supporting WBI, degree of WBI implementation, WBI for Physical Education majors versus non-majors, and types of courses that utilize WBI. The data were collected via an instrument returned by 57 of 148 faculty members surveyed. Data analysis indicated the following: primary obstacles to WBI utilization were lack of time to prepare and lack of adequate training; the primary factors supporting WBI utilization were software and hardware resources. Data indicated …

Batter's Choice: Lessons For Teaching Tactics In A Modified Striking/Fielding Game, Christina Sinclair Jan 2004

Batter's Choice: Lessons For Teaching Tactics In A Modified Striking/Fielding Game, Christina Sinclair

Faculty Publications

When played in their standard form, striking/fielding games are often a favorite among elementary students; yet they allow for only limited participation, which is contradictory to quality physical education. This article presents a sequence of lessons leading to Batter's Choice, a modified striking/fielding game, designed to maximize the attainment of tactical awareness, skill enhancement, and enjoyment by elementary children. Each lesson uses a tactical approach to involve students in solving a tactical problem within a game-like situation and then practicing the skills necessary to solve the problem. The tactical problems prepare students for game situations they will experience in the …

Students' Construction Of The Body In Physical Education, Laura Azzarito Jan 2004

Students' Construction Of The Body In Physical Education, Laura Azzarito

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Recently, physical education researchers have been concerned about the results of national studies reporting young people's low level of participation in physical activity and health problems associated with inactivity. In general girls are less active than boys, and youth from low socioeconomic classes are less active and are more likely be unhealthy than middle or upper class youth. Blacks have the highest risks of health problems and the highest levels of physical inactivity. Among a number of recommendations included in Healthy People 2010, physical education has been identified as a fundamental site for addressing today's challenges. According to physical education …
