Interactive Topographic Web Mapping Using Scalable Vector Graphics, Peter Pavlicko Dec 2003

Interactive Topographic Web Mapping Using Scalable Vector Graphics, Peter Pavlicko

Student Work

Large scale topographic maps portray detailed information about the landscape. They are used for a wide variety o f purposes. USGS large scale topographic maps at 1:24,000 have been traditionally distributed in paper form. With the advent of the Internet, these maps can now be distributed electronically. Instead of common raster format presentation, the solution presented here is based on a vector approach. The vector format provides many advantages compared to the use of a raster-based presentation. This research shows that Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a promising technology for delivering high quality interactive topographic maps via the Internet, both …

Vertebrate Information Compiled By The Utah Natural Heritage Program: A Progress Report, State Of Utah Department Of Natural Resources, William R. Bosworth Iii, Division Of Wildlife Resources, Utah Natural Heritage Program

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The Utah Natural Heritage Program (UNHP) assimilates and synthesizes information concerning rare species for use in land management and species conservation applications. This information is maintained in the UNHP database and includes both species-level information—e.g., assessments of species conservation status from a statewide perspective—and population-level information, which includes GIS coverages for species of high conservational interest. Beginning in 1996 an effort to develop information in the UNHP database for animal species was funded by the Utah Reclamation, Mitigation, and Conservation Commission under authority of the Central Utah Project Completion Act. Initial efforts focused on assigning conservation priority ranks. Several factors—comprising …

An Egocentric Spatial Data Model For Intelligent Mobile Geographic Information Systems, Christopher E. Frank

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Individuals in unknown locations, such as utility workers in the field, soldiers on a mission, or sightseeing tourists, share the need for an answer to two basic questions: "Where am I?" and "What is in front of me?Because such information is not readily available in foreign locations, aids in the form of paper maps or mobile GISs, which give individuals an all-inclusive view of the environment, are often used. This panoptic view may hinder the positioning and orienteering process, since people perceive their surroundings perspectively from their current position. In this thesis, I describe a novel framework that resolves this …

Query-By-Pointing: Algorithms And Pointing Error Compensation, Farhan Faisal Dec 2003

Query-By-Pointing: Algorithms And Pointing Error Compensation, Farhan Faisal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

People typically communicate by pointing, talking, sketching, writing, and typing. Pointing can be used to visualize or exchange information about an object when there is no other mutually understood way of communication. Despite its proven expressiveness, however, it has not yet become a frequently used modality to interact with computer systems. With the rapid move towards the adoption of mobile technologies, geographic information systems (GISs) have a particular need for advanced forms of interaction that enable users to query the geographic world directly. To enable pointing-based query system on a handheld device, a number of fundamental technical challenges have to …

Meeting Cereal Demand While Protecting Natural Resources And Improving Environmental Quality, Kenneth G. Cassman, Achim R. Dobermann, Daniel T. Walters, Haishun Yang

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Agriculture is a resource-intensive enterprise. The manner in which food production systems utilize resources has a large influence on environmental quality. To evaluate prospects for conserving natural resources while meeting increased demand for cereals, we interpret recent trends and future trajectories in crop yields, land and nitrogen fertilizer use, carbon sequestration, and greenhouse gas emissions to identify key issues and challenges. Based on this assessment, we conclude that avoiding expansion of cultivation into natural ecosystems, increased nitrogen use efficiency, and improved soil quality are pivotal components of a sustainable agriculture that meets human needs and protects natural resources. To achieve …

A rapid growth of available geospatial data requires development of systems capable of autonomous data retrieval, integration and validation. Mobile agent technology may provide a suitable framework for developing such systems since this technology can deal, in a natural way, with the distributed heterogeneous nature of the data. We evaluate our novel multi-agent architecture for geospatial data integration and compare its performance with a client/server and a single-agent architecture. We analyze the performance alteration for various numbers of participating nodes, amount of database accesses, processing loads, and network loads.

Extended Hough Methodology In Geo-Spatial Image Exploitation, Rufus H. Cofer, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Jihun Cha Aug 2003

Extended Hough Methodology In Geo-Spatial Image Exploitation, Rufus H. Cofer, Samuel Peter Kozaitis, Jihun Cha

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Hough transform theory provides a heuristically appealing approach toward finding lineal features in imagery. Unfortunately direct algorithmic implementation of its theory results in many practical problems. We provide two interlocking theoretical extensions to greatly enhances the Hough transform's ability to handle finite lineal features and allow directed search for parallel lines within the scene while balancing memory and computational complexity. Both extensions involve expansion of the Hough space concept to allow easier access to processed data for both dedicated silicon and general-purpose computer implementations.

Public Commons For Geospatial Data: A Conceptual Model, Chakravarthy Namindi Sharad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A wide variety of spatial data collection efforts are ongoing throughout local, state and federal agencies, private firms and non-profit organizations. Each effort is established for a different purpose but organizations and individuals often collect and maintain the same or similar information. The United States federal government has undertaken many initiatives such as the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, the National Map and Geospatial One-Stop to reduce duplicative spatial data collection and promote the coordinated use, sharing, and dissemination of spatial data nationwide. A key premise in most of these initiatives is that no national government will be able to gather …

Spatial Aspects Of Metaphors For Information: Implications For Polycentric System Design, Paul Charles Schroeder Aug 2003

Spatial Aspects Of Metaphors For Information: Implications For Polycentric System Design, Paul Charles Schroeder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents three innovations that suggest an alternative approach to structuring information systems: a multidimensional heuristic workspace, a resonance metaphor for information, and a question-centered approach to structuring information relations. Motivated by the need for space to establish a question-centered learning environment, a heuristic workspace has been designed. Both the question-centered approach to information system design and the workspace have been conceived with the resonance metaphor in mind. This research stemmed from a set of questions aimed at learning how spatial concepts and related factors including geography may play a role in information sharing and public information access. In …

Interpolation Of Spatial Surfaces And Inferring Subsurface Transitions Using Electrical Conductivity, Robert Claborne Wilson Aug 2003

Interpolation Of Spatial Surfaces And Inferring Subsurface Transitions Using Electrical Conductivity, Robert Claborne Wilson

Masters Theses

Precision agriculture techniques are becoming more popular within the agriculture community as producers demand more return from an ever-decreasing amount of farmland. Increased environmental regulations are forcing farmers to reduce the input of fertilizers and agrochemicals on their crops. Innovative techniques in precision agriculture are enhancing traditional decision-making processes by offering multiple layers of data for a production field. It is difficult to determine the complex interactions that exist between factors affecting crop growth and the resultant management decisions. Strategies in precision agriculture attempt to modify customary practices in order to address the known variability of field conditions. This case …

Towards A Role-Based Metadata Scheme For Educational Digital Libraries: A Case Study In Singapore, Dian Melati Md Ismail, Ming Yin, Yin-Leng Theng, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we describe the development of an appropriate metadata scheme for GeogDL, a Web-based digital library application containing past-year examination resources for students taking a Singapore national examination in geography. The new metadata scheme was developed from established metadata schemes on education and e-learning. Initial evaluation showed that a role-based approach would be more viable, adapting to the different roles of teachers/educators and librarians contributing geography resources to GeogDL. The paper concludes with concrete implementation of the role-based metadata schema for GeogDL.

Soil Moisture Estimation From Remotely Sensed Hyperspectral Data, Amy L. Kaleita, Lei F. Tian, Haibo Yao Jul 2003

Soil Moisture Estimation From Remotely Sensed Hyperspectral Data, Amy L. Kaleita, Lei F. Tian, Haibo Yao

Amy L. Kaleita

A methodology for mapping surface soil moisture content across an agricultural field from optical remote sensing and ground sampling is developed. This study uses both ground-based and remotely sensed spectral measurements of soil reflectance in visible and near-infrared wavelengths and concurrent measurements of volumetric soil moisture within the top 6 cm. After determining appropriate wavelengths for soil moisture estimation from spectral reflectance, a cokriging scheme was used to generate soil moisture maps. Results indicate that combining reflectance and ground measurements can yield more detailed maps of soil moisture than ground measurement alone.
