Civil rights organizations played a crucial role in these efforts. The NAACP chapter was established as early as 1918, but after an initial burst it was relatively ineffective until the 1950s. Special Word-Unit Windows In Running Text, Mike Keith

Word Ways

The idea of searching existing for accidental windows (contiguous blocks of text) having special properties has been explored often in Word Ways, but previous studies have usually considered letter-unit constraints such as the lipogram or pangram. In this article, inspired by similar explorations in the new edition of Opperlands! Taal- & letterkunde (Battus' seminal book on Dutch wordplay), we focus on textual windows having special word-unit properties.

A Different Face Of Faith-Based Politics: Social Capital And Community Organizing In The Public Arena, Richard L. Wood, Mark R. Warren

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

The role of religion in American politics and civil society has drawn significant scholarly focus, but most of the recent attention has fallen on the religious rights political influence and, more recently, on new initiatives to broaden the channeling of social service funding through faith- based organizations. These are important issues, but they exclude another historically important face of religiously-grounded public engagement: religious pressure for deeper political and economic democracy. We examine a widespread contemporary aspect of such engagement, faith-based community organizing (FBCO), through which poor and middle-income religious congregations advance the interests of their members. We analyze data from …
