Using Gis For Forest Recreation Planning On The Longleaf Ridge Special Area Of The Angelina National Forest, East Texas, I-Kuai Hung

Faculty Publications

Longleaf Ridge Special Area (LRSA) located in the Angelina National Forest is the westernmost example of a longleaf pine savanna community. Ecologically, the area is one of the most diverse communities in Texas. Due to its size, abundant natural and historical resources, numerous outdoor recreation opportunities exist. In this study, GIS was used to develop a forest recreation concept plan on LRSA. Most of the geospatial data came from public entities. Information for demand analysis on forest recreation was obtained from the 2000 National Survey on Recreation and the Environment database. U.S. Forest Service recreation fee envelope data were analyzed …

Developing Impervious Surface Estimates For Coastal New Hampshire, David G. Justice, Fay A. Rubin Dec 2002

Developing Impervious Surface Estimates For Coastal New Hampshire, David G. Justice, Fay A. Rubin

PREP Reports & Publications

Future population growth and the corresponding increase in development in the coastal zone of NH are widely recognized as major threats to the integrity of coastal systems and their watersheds. The potential impacts associated with the expansion of developed land, and specifically with increasing amounts of impervious surfaces – rooftops, sidewalks, roads, and parking lots - may include significant changes in water quantity, degradation in water quality, and habitat loss. Because asphalt, concrete, stone, and other impenetrable materials effectively seal the ground surface, water is repelled and is prevented from infiltrating soils. Instead, stormwater runoff flows directly into our surface …

Detection And Generalization Of Spatio-Temporal Trajectories For Motion Imagery, Panayotis Partsinevelos Dec 2002

Detection And Generalization Of Spatio-Temporal Trajectories For Motion Imagery, Panayotis Partsinevelos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In today's world of vast information availability users often confront large unorganized amounts of data with limited tools for managing them. Motion imagery datasets have become increasingly popular means for exposing and disseminating information. Commonly, moving objects are of primary interest in modeling such datasets. Users may require different levels of detail mainly for visualization and further processing purposes according to the application at hand. In this thesis we exploit the geometric attributes of objects for dataset summarization by using a series of image processing and neural network tools. In order to form data summaries we select representative time instances …

Geospatial And Statistical Foundations For Streamflow Synthesis In West Virginia, Annie J. Morris Dec 2002

Geospatial And Statistical Foundations For Streamflow Synthesis In West Virginia, Annie J. Morris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Streamflow values must be synthesized for locations where flow measurement stations, in applications such as the West Virginia SWAP program, are lacking or where only intermittent measurements are available (West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, 1999). This research describes an effort to improve upon the current synthetic streamflow model by incorporating geomorphic, geologic, and hydrogeologic measurements. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to derive a set of master variables that characterize stream flow in West Virginia based on historical data from 29 watersheds. The relationships between variables affecting stream flow were also analyzed using cluster and correlation analysis …

Modeling Boundaries Of Influence Among Positional Uncertainty Fields, Joshua P. King Dec 2002

Modeling Boundaries Of Influence Among Positional Uncertainty Fields, Joshua P. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within a CIS environment, the proper use of information requires the identification of the uncertainty associated with it. As such, there has been a substantial amount of research dedicated to describing and quantifying spatial data uncertainty. Recent advances in sensor technology and image analysis techniques are making image-derived geospatial data increasingly popular. Along with development in sensor and image analysis technologies have come departures from conventional point-by-point measurements. Current advancements support the transition from traditional point measures to novel techniques that allow the extraction of complex objects as single entities (e.g., road outlines, buildings). As the methods of data extraction …

Electronic Data Collection For Rockfall Hazard Evaluation, Derrick Ladon Bellamy Dec 2002

Electronic Data Collection For Rockfall Hazard Evaluation, Derrick Ladon Bellamy

Masters Theses

Rockfall field data collection traditionally has used conventional stationery tools, i.e. pencil and paper, for data collection. Traditional methodologies are being revisited with the advent of PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistants) or penbased computers. With the utilization of such technology, field data can be collected electronically. An electronic data collection system using PDA’s was developed for this thesis. The advantages of the PDA approach over pencil and paper data collection include automatic error and data integrity checks during data input, and the elimination of manual data entry. The PDA’s also allow automatic branching to solicit data input based on previous data …

Diaspora Influence Impacting United States' Policy In The Caspian Littoral, Daniel S. Parker Oct 2002

Diaspora Influence Impacting United States' Policy In The Caspian Littoral, Daniel S. Parker

Student Work

The United States is a country of immigrants, from its prehistoric beginnings to the present. Squabbles between different groups have also been a part of our history At the beginning of the 20th century, President Theodore Roosevelt recognized the potential for ethnic conflicts, imported from Europe, to render harm to the United States. In today's international political environment, the potential for violence remains; however, ethnic groups have also been quick to grasp their constitutional rights of civic action and government participation. In so doing, these ethnic groups may unduly influence United States’ policy for their own purposes in a kind …

Distributing Non-Marc Metadata: The Cugir Metadata Sharing Project, Adam Chandler, Elaine L. Westbrooks

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Technical Service departments throughout libraries today are increasingly in the position to create and maintain non-MARC metadata that may be shared among institutions. The Cornell University Geospatial Information Repository (CUGIR) Metadata Sharing Project is an example of a system that manages heterogeneous metadata such as MARC, Dublin Core, and Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). The mechanics and policies required to exchange MARC records are mature and well understood. In contrast, non-MARC metadata resource sharing is largely uncharted territory. The authors present and discuss the mechanisms they implemented to enable heterogeneous metadata sharing. Now that CUGIR geospatial metadata records …

Development And Implementation Of A Comprehensive Lake And Reservoir Strategy For Nebraska As A Model For Agricultural Dominated Ecosystems, John C. Holz, James W. Merchant, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Kyle D. Hoagland, Istvan Bogardi, Donald C. Rundquist

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

In agriculturally dominated regions, land use practices have an unusually large impact on water bodies and, therefore, land use may reduce the utility of current ecoregion-based approaches to lake classification by dampening the signals that underlie the ecoregion framework. A team of water quality researchers has been assembled to develop a comprehensive classification scheme for agriculturally dominated ecosystems, using Nebraska as a highly representative model. Three objectives critical to achieving this goal are to establish: (1) a protocol for aggregating water bodies in agricultural ecosystems into classification strata and identifying reference conditions for these classes; (2) the role of remote …

Identifying Potential Sedimentation Sources Through A Remote Sensing And Gis Analysis Of Landuse/Landcover For The Weeks Bay Watershed, Baldwin County, Alabama, John Harrison Cartwright

Theses and Dissertations

The Weeks Bay watershed in Baldwin County, Alabama has experienced rapid changes in landuse/ landcover (LULC) from 1990 to 2000. These changes have resulted in increased upland erosion and higher concentrations of suspended sediment within the watershed. For this research project a spatial model was developed to identify potential sources of sediment relevant to LULC and slope. Landsat satellite imagery was classified to assess LULC within the Weeks Bay watershed. The classification includes forested vegetation, herbaceous vegetation (seasonal and persistent), mixed/ transitional vegetation, urban/ built-up areas, sparse/ residual vegetation and water, with an overall accuracy of 78%. Change detections of …
